A Family Perspective The Sanctuary Lamp will burn at St. Joseph Church the week of July 16th for the greater glory of God and for: Louis Lupo Requested by Sister, Marie & George Dixon by Bud Ozar The stress and anxieties of family life are like thorns which choke off any opportunity to reflect on God s presence in our lives. Notice in today s gospel Jesus left the house so He could connect with His Father. Grasp five minutes each day to appreciate God walking with you.

Ever wonder why it s called Mass and not a service? Why do we bow during the Creed? Why is there water at the door? and more If you have ever wondered about how and why Catholic s celebrate Mass the way we do, then join Seminarian Chris Kelley as he walks us through the different parts of the Mass that gives expression to the faith handed down to us from Jesus Christ himself, through the Apostles, to today. Join us and even invite your friends or relatives that may not be Catholic, yet have questions: Saturday, July 15 th at 5:15pm in St. Gabriel Church (following the 4:00pm Mass) or Sunday, July 16 th at 11:15am in St. Joseph Church (following the 10:00am Mass) The sanctuary candle is burned continually in a Catholic or Orthodox Church as a sign of the continual real presence of Jesus Christ: Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity under the appearance of the host, kept by the tabernacle in each church building. The candle is a sign to those who wish to pray that Jesus is truly present, looking at each person with love, listening to their prayers and giving them the grace needed to deal with the problems of life. The only time of the liturgical year on which the sanctuary candle is not lit is the Holy Triduum when Jesus is removed from the tabernacle as a reminder to the faithful of his absence when He was in the tomb. St. Gabriel Church is offering parishioners and guests the opportunity to light our sanctuary candle, the same as St. Joseph Church has done, to offer honor and respect to God and loved ones with your request. It would be lit the Sunday going forward for the week. Donation request is $20 and notification would be placed in the bulletin (as it is on the Mass Intention page this week). Please call or email the parish rectory if you would like to reserve the sanctuary candle for a special intention. Stump the Seminarian Part 7 By Christopher Kelley To submit a question for me to answer in the bulletin, or just something you were curious about, please send an email to me at: 83KELLEY@CUA.EDU. Q: How does someone come back to the faith/church? Returning to the faith is one of the hardest decisions people can make, especially, the longer someone has been separated from the church. As time goes by, it becomes easier to simply say that no one cares or notices my absence at Mass and the reasons we had for leaving may no longer be clear, but, now it seems too late to go back. Those that leave the community do so for a variety of reasons, yet, we must always remember that the door is never closed. When someone leaves, they do so leaving the door slightly open, like the pantry door that never quite wants to stay closed all the time. If they do end up returning, it is because something (or someone) within them has been calling out to them, gently suggesting or nagging at their mind until they finally acknowledge it. Then, once they do, the question becomes how? How do I come back after being gone for so long; how do I explain this to people? In truth, we don t need to explain it every time. While it is great to put logic and reasoning into a feeling, sometimes, it really just is the Holy Spirit prompting the heart to get us back to the community and into the faith once more. As someone who left the church in high school after my parents passed, it was difficult for me to come back to the faith and even more so, to stay once I had come back. Yet, I always remembered that the most important thing to keep in mind was that we need to take baby steps and be humble. It s OK to put one foot in at a time and slowly reenter. If we are sincere about returning, we should make sure that we go to confession and humble ourselves before God, who uses the priest to communicate and bring about the forgiveness we so desire. After having received forgiveness from our past and guidance on how to move forward, we are able to rejoin the entire community and receive Christ in the Eucharist during the Mass. It is also worth noting that someone who returns to the faith should never be pressured to jump into a ministry or activity, rather, they should simply be invited into the communal life of the church. They need to be guided back into the faith and have the questions they hold finally answered, not only by a priest or deacon, but also by someone who lives their faith regularly and knows the ups and downs that they will experience. Most of all, they need to know that they matter and are noticed by the community and can feel welcomed or loved. Parish Missionary Needs Your Support! Nick can be reached at 860-371-1240 or at nicholas.chapman@focus.org.

Because of the merger and the anticipated volume of requests, we ask that you limit your Mass request dates to five until the initial influx subsides. Weekday Mass offering is $15. Weekend Mass and Holy Day offering is $20. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Sincerely in Christ, Rev. John P. Melnick Reminder: All are invited to join in a reception for Deacon Ron Biamonte at St. Gabriel Church Hall this Sunday after Masses.
