This is to differentiate between him and the other Apostle with the same name. Saint James was one of the first apostles called by Jesus. This happened by the Sea of Galilee, where James and his brother, John, were mending their fishing nets (see Matthew 4:18). Saint James was also the first apostles to shed his blood for Christ. He was martyred in the year 44 A.D. and buried in Jerusalem. Saint James held a special place in the Lord s heart. The gospel tells us that on certain occasions, Jesus often called Peter, James and John to accompany him. Saint James was next to Jesus at the Transfiguration, during his Agony in the Garden Gethsemani, and in the house of Jarius when Jesus raised the dead little girl to life. Because of the zeal of Saint James and his brother Saint John, the Lord called them Boanerges or sons of thunder. It is also believed that Saint James was the first missionary to Spain where he is still venerated to this day. SOME SYMBOLS OF SAINT JAMES. It is believed that Saint James traveled across the Mediterranean as far as Spain to found the now famous pilgrimage church Santiago (Spanish for Saint James) de Compostela. The seashell, symbolizing that voyage, and the pilgrim staff are common symbols of Saint James. The sword is a symbol of his martyrdom. Saint James was beheaded by Herod Agrippa. He is the only apostle whose death is recorded in scripture (Acts 12:2). On Wednesday, July 25th we will celebrate the Feast of St. James with a special prayer service at 7:00 PM.
