Holy Eucharist, Rite I Ordinary Time, Proper 13 St. John s Episcopal Church 7:30 a.m. Sunday, July 31, 2016 Ocean Springs, Mississippi Welcome to St. John s. We are very glad you have joined us for worship today. As you prepare for worship, please be sensitive to the needs of those around you who may wish to pray quietly. Please refrain from unnecessary conversation and silence any audible electronic devices. As an aid those who wish to read the liturgy directly from the Book of Common Prayer and the Hymnal 1982, an outline of the service is printed below. Opening Acclamation Gloria Collect of the Day First Reading Psalm 49:1-11 Second Reading Holy Gospel Sermon Nicene Creed Prayers of the People Confession of Sin Peace Holy Communion Offertory Sentence Book of Common Prayer, p. 323 Book of Common Prayer, p. 324 Book of Common Prayer, p. 180 Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23 Book of Common Prayer, p. 652 Colossians 3:1-11 Luke 12:13-21 The Very Rev. Dr. Charles Hawkins Book of Common Prayer, p. 326 Book of Common Prayer, p. 328 Book of Common Prayer, p. 331 Book of Common Prayer, p. 332 Book of Common Prayer, p. 333 Book of Common Prayer, p. 343

Offertory Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer II Book of Common Prayer, p. 340 Proper Preface Book of Common Prayer, p. 344 Sanctus Book of Common Prayer, p. 341 The Lord s Prayer Book of Common Prayer, p. 336 Fraction Book of Common Prayer, p. 337 Postcommunion Prayer Book of Common Prayer, p. 339 Blessing Book of Common Prayer, p. 339 Dismissal Book of Common Prayer, p. 340 After the Dismissal, some in the congregation may wish to be seated again to enjoy the Postlude. If you do not wish to stay for the Postlude, please leave quietly. Lessons for Today Some prefer to listen to the lessons from Holy Scripture without reading along with the lector. For them the act of listening to Holy Scripture read aloud is an important spiritual discipline. Others prefer to bring their bibles to worship services and to look up the scripture verses that are being read aloud. For them the physical use of the bible and the physical handling of the book itself is an important spiritual discipline. Still others prefer to access the Holy Scriptures used in worship via the reprinting of the lessons in bulletins or service leaflets prepared for worship services at St. John s. For those who wish to read along with the lector from Holy Scripture as reprinted by the parish, the lessons for today are printed below. First Reading Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23 Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. I, the Teacher, when king over Israel in Jerusalem, applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to human beings to be busy with. I saw all the deeds that are done under the sun; and see, all is vanity and a chasing after wind. I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to those who come after me and who knows whether they will be wise or foolish? Yet they will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. So I turned and gave my heart up to despair concerning all the toil of my labors under the sun, because sometimes one who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave all to be enjoyed by another who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. What do mortals get from all the toil and strain with which they toil under the sun? For all their days are full of pain, and their work is a vexation; even at night their minds do not rest. This also is vanity. 2

Second Reading Colossians 3:1-11 If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. But now you must get rid of all such things anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all! Holy Gospel Luke 12:13-21 Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me. But he said to him, Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you? And he said to them, Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. Then he told them a parable: The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops? Then he said, I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. But God said to him, You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be? So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God. 3

A Note on Today s Readings Proper 13: Sunday closest to August 3 Year C In today s liturgy, we are confronted with the radical shift in our values brought about by our union with Christ in baptism. In the gospel reading, Jesus is asked to settle a property dispute between two brothers. Instead, he warns against placing our highest value in material acquisition, for that value is a fleeting and uncertain one. Our highest value should be our relationship with God, which alone is permanent and certain. In the first reading, we have the wise reflections of a person who found that spending one s life on the accumulation of material goods is an empty project. It is vanity and striving after wind. In the passage from Colossians, Paul describes the new way of living which belongs to those unified with Christ in baptism. As people who have put on the new nature, our behavior toward others is transformed; our relationships with others are no longer based on human values or differences; and our lives consist of joy, peace, forgiveness, and thanksgiving. When we present to God the work of human hands in bread and wine and gifts of our material possessions, we are placing our lives into a new and transforming relationship with God. Our relationship toward the material world is likewise transformed. We are put right in our relationship with God, with others, with ourselves, and with the material world. Then we are sent out to live in that new relationship each day. From The Rite Light: Reflections on the Sunday Readings and Seasons of the Church Year. Copyright 2007 by Michael W. Merriman.
