For this 4th part, we focus on Gluttony. What no better week that to do this than Thanksgiving! Gluttony means overindulgence and over-consumption of food, drink, or wealth items. In Christianity, it is considered a sin if the excessive desire for food causes it to be withheld from the needy. Some Christian denominations consider gluttony as one of the seven deadly sins, a misplaced or inordinate desire for food or drink. In the 7 Deadly sins, Gluttony can be a problem when we choose to overindulge ourselves in food or other material things that we have to excess. Often, we have heard of someone being a glutton when we eat too much cake or other treats. We may also know the phrase, they are a glutton for punishment. This being a sarcastic way to define someone who constantly keeps having bad things happen to them in life. Gluttons can be helped with the virtue of Self-control. Self-control is one s ability to control their intake or behaviors to a healthy balance. In Gilligan s Island, two characters could be considered Gluttons. Lovie (the Millionaire s wife,) was a glutton of too much good living. She often would be seen lazing around having people dote on her. But Gilligan could also be a glutton because so often he could be seen eating vast amounts of food to excess and have it spill all over the place. The passage of scripture this week for gluttony comes from Luke 16. The story of the Rich Man and Lazarus. The Rich man feasted and ate wonderful foods each day while the poor man, Lazarus, lay on the ground by his gate with sores on his body. Lazarus hoped to gain scrapes from the rich man s table. There is a great inequity in this story. Both men deserved to be fed a healthy diet. In the service, we will look at how we view the inequalities of humanity and how we as Christians can examine our faith and make a difference in providing and sharing with those in need. This week is Thanksgiving so let us all be thankful for the blessings God provides for us. Scripture Readings: Luke 16: 19-31 Sermon: Part 4: Gluttony. Have you had your fill yet?

from the Pews News from the Pews Page 13 Page 13 Grant s World This week is Thanksgiving. The fall leaves are starting to change, the dew falls softly on our homes and gardens and the air feels crisp. I love the fall and the beauty God brings with it. Over the weekend I plan to spend a fair bit of time with family and friends heading out to Cobourg and up to Pigeon Lake where my brother purchased a cottage this summer. I m hoping to see the leaves in full colours up there and maybe go for a paddle in the lake if possible. Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for the abundance God provides us and to the family or friends we enjoy spending time with. I pray that you all will have a blessed Thanksgiving weekend. See you on Sunday. Grant
