August 2013 Island in the Son UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Explosion Leaves Many Homeless in West, Texas As a result of the April 17 fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, 15 people lost their lives, the water and sewer systems were severely damaged, and hundreds of residents were displaced. Many of them face thousands of dollars in unexpected costs and are uncertain about when they can return to the McLennan County town of 2,807. The town and schools lack tens of millions of dollars after losing parts of three buildings in the blast. Damages exceeded $35 million and millions more will be needed for long-term recovery costs. See page 2 of this newsletter for more info on how you can help. CORPUS CHRISTI,, TEXAST These are images of the West, Texas fertilizer plant explosion. In June the Federal Emergency Management Agency declined to grant West a major disaster declaration. Governor Rick Perry told residents that he had urged President Barack Obama and federal officials to reconsider their denial of major emergency aid, according to an Associated Press article in the July 14 Corpus Christi Caller-Times. Governor Perry pledged support from the state for reconstruction in West, and we can help, too. Please continue to pray for West and its residents and give generously through our August 4 communion offering to help them. Betty Thomas, Worship Team Chair Midweek Prayer Please join the prayer group on Wednesdays at 5:45 PM. It is a special time of prayer and meditation. Prayers of and for the church, individuals and the country are lifted up during this time. I sought The Lord, and he answered me. ~Psalm 34:4

Methodist Men s Prayer Breakfast SAT., AUGUST 17 8:00 AM at Island in the Son UMC! Come enjoy the food and fellowship and bring a friend! Let Stan Gierhan know what you can bring and/or contact him for more info, 507-429-4419. The July Men's Prayer Breakfast was held on July 20th, with 7 men in attendance. The fine pancake breakfast was followed by a devotion and a slide presentation showing the statistical proof of the importance of men's attendance and participation in a growing congregation. The discussion presented how churches could become more men-friendly by creating an environment attractive to men and service formats and sermons that men relate to, as well as by creating outside events and programs that could attract men through the back door. After closing Pastor John visited 12 homes on Padre Island to contact new arrivals to the Island and give them information about our church. Steve Black, Stan Gierhan and Lowell Thomas worked on patching a roof leak on the Church's roof. In God we trust, Stan Gierhan, MPB Coordinator
