Welcome! We are so glad you are here. April 22, 2018-10:00 a.m. Smell is a potent wizard that transports you across thousands of miles and all the years you have lived. Helen Keller, who was deaf and blind The neurological interconnection between the sense of smell (olfaction) and emotion is uniquely intimate no other sensory system has this kind of privilege and direct access to the part of the brain that controls our emotions. Rachel Herz, Cognitive Neuroscientis To smell God was to know God as a transcendent yet transforming presence, a presence actively known through bodily experience. Susan Ashbrook Harvey, Historian, from her book, Scenting Salvation Put an altar of incense in your innermost heart. Be a sweet aroma of Christ. Adapted from St. John Chrysostom (c. 347-407) We are not worthy, Master and Lord, that you should come beneath the roof of our souls; yet since in your love towards all, you wish to dwell in us, in boldness, we come. You command; open the gates, which you alone have made. And you will come in and enlightened our darkened reasoning. We believe that you will do this; for you did not send away the prostitute who came to you with tears, nor cast out the repenting tax-collector, nor reject the thief who acknowledged your kingdom. But you counted all of these as members of your band of friends. You are blessed forevermore. Thank you, Jesus! In Your blessed name we pray. Amen. A TIME OF SILENCE ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS *GLORY BE TO THE FATHER (#577) Glory be to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. *OFFERING OF PRAYER (in unison)...................... Adapted from St. Augustine, 354-430 What do we love when we love you, O God? Not the beauty of body nor the brightness of light so friendly to the eyes, not sweet and various melodies of songs, nor the fragrance of flowers and ointments and spices And yet we do love a kind of light, melody, fragrance, food, embracement when we love our God. For God is where that light shines into our soul which no place can contain, where that voice sounds which time does not take away, where that fragrance smells which no wind scatters, and where there is that flavor which eating does not diminish. Thank you, O God, for the fullness you bring! In Jesus name we pray. A WORD FROM KENNEDY IT S TIME TO STAND BOLD FOR JUSTICE! Once a year, we ask you to simply do one thing. We ask you to show up. That s it. But when you do, you enable us to join with other people of faith to make a profound difference in the lives of thousands in our community. And tomorrow, we need you to come together and make that difference as we gather for the annual assembly with our sister churches in Bold Justice. This year, we will be addressing issues related to two terrible tragedies in our community: the 12 deaths at Hollywood Hills Nursing Home, and the 17 students and teachers lost at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas. Leaders from both the State Attorney s and the Broward Sheriff s offices will be meeting with us and 1500 or so others who will come together from across Broward County. We need you to be part of that number. We have set a goal of 50 folks from our congregation; and for us to meet that number, we need to have as many of you gathered here this morning with us tomorrow evening. The BOLD Justice Nehemiah Rally will be at 7:30 p.m. at St. David s Roman Catholic Church in Davie, 3900 South University Drive, between 595 and Griffin Road. Please join us, and be part of this crucial event in the life of our church, and our larger community. IN FAITH, WE VE ORDERED THE SHUTTERS! For years, we have been fortunate that the 22 priceless stained-glass windows which adorn our building have not been damaged or even destroyed by hurricanes. But after the close call of Irma, we have decided that the time has come to protect these windows; and we have discovered that the cost is surprisingly affordable. To install storm shutters comes to only about $500.00 per window. In order to get this protection installed before the height of hurricane season, we have stepped out in faith, and advanced funds from reserves to get this work started. Now, we already have a commitment to fund almost 20% of this work, but we need others to step up. In the coming weeks, we ll be writing to you directly to ask you to join in protecting this beautiful artistic legacy - but you don t have to wait for the letter. If you are interested now in making a special gift for this need, please contact the pastor at kennedym@fpcoh.org or at 954-257-6751.
