Do not steal. Do not lie. Honor and respect your mother and father. The man said, I have kept all these commandments.

Grade Preschool One day, a rich young man asked Jesus, What should I do in order to go to heaven? Jesus said, Why do you ask? You know what God has said. Here are some of the commandments: Do not kill. Do not steal. Do not lie. Honor and respect your mother and father. The man said, I have kept all these commandments. He seemed to want Jesus to tell him more. Jesus then said, There is one more thing you can do: sell all you have and give the money to the poor. Then, come and follow me. For in heaven you will have all that you need. The man was sad because he had a lot of expensive things. He did not want to sell them. Jesus then told the crowd: Do you know the very small city gate called eye of the needle? It is easier for a camel to go through that small gate than for a rich man to go to heaven. But the rich can be saved and go to heaven. With God all things are possible. 1. In this story, who is speaking with Jesus? 2. Jesus tells some of God s commandments. Which one talks about mothers and fathers? 3. What does the commandment about mothers and fathers say? 4. What is another of God s commandments? 5. Jesus told the man he could do one more thing if he wanted to go to heaven. What was it? 6. In the picture, why is the rich man leaving sad

Grade: K-2 1. What did the rich young man want to know? 2. Jesus reminded him of God s commandments. What are some of them? 3. What did the young man say to Jesus about the commandments? 4. Jesus told the rich young man one more thing he could do. What was it? 5. Why did the rich young man become sad and leave Jesus? 6. What did Jesus then say to the crowd. 7. To understand the lesson of this story, let s think about the people we love. Let s pretend someone kidnapped your family. You found a note that said, Collect everything that is yours and place it on your porch. We will make a trade. We will take your things, and in return, we will give your back your family. Would you do what the kidnappers wanted? 8. Just as your family is more important than anything you own, God is more important than anything we have. We must always remember that God, and getting to heaven, are more important than anything. 9. Jesus told us that we will have something in heaven. What is it? One day, a rich young man asked Jesus, What should I do in order to go to heaven? Jesus said, Why do you ask? You know what God has said. Here are some of the commandments: Do not kill. Do not steal. Do not lie. Honor and respect your mother and father. The man said, I have kept all these commandments. He wanted Jesus to tell him more. So, Jesus said, There is one more thing you can do: sell all you have and give the money to the poor. But they can be saved and go to heaven. With God all things are possible.

Grade: 3-5 a man came testing Jesus and asking, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother. And the man said, All these I have observed from my youth. And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. But when the man heard this he became said, for he was very rich. Jesus, seeing him sad, said, How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Those who heard it said, Then who can be saved? But Jesus said, What is impossible with men is possible 1. Of all the things that are yours, which is your favorite? 2. How would you feel if you were asked to give it away? Why? 3. What does Jesus tell the man he needs to do? 4. What does Jesus tell the man he can do after he sells everything? 5. What would giving away some of your things allow you to do? 7. The eye of a needle is a curious phrase. Some Bible scholars say that it was the name for a very small gate leading into the city. Others say that the word camel was read wrong. They say that Jesus said rope. 6. Do you know the lesson that Jesus is teaching in this story. Here are some choices: a. It is wrong to have money. b. Camels can t go to heaven. c. Rich people can t go to heaven. d. Jesus, and our salvation, are to be more important than anything else in our life.

Grade: Middle School a man came testing Jesus and asking, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Those who heard it said, Then who can be saved? But Jesus said, What is impossible with men is possible 1. What does Jesus tell the man to do? 2. Would this be hard for you to do? Why or Why not? 3. What things would be difficult for your to give away? Why? 4. Is there someone who could use those things or the money you could earn by selling them more than you? Who? 5. What would the young man gain if he sold his stuff? 6. What can you gain by giving something of yours away?

Grade: High School a man came testing Jesus and asking, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother. And the man said, All these I have observed from my youth. For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Those who heard it said, Then who can be saved? But Jesus said, What is impossible with men is possible 1. What point is Jesus making by saying no one is good but God alone? When the young man calls Jesus good teacher what does that claim about Jesus? 2. If no one is good but God alone what are we claiming when we say someone did a good thing? When we say someone is good? 3. What does Jesus tell the young man he needs to do in order to inherit eternal life? 4. Why might this be a hard thing to do? 5. Why do you think a person might need to giver her stuff away in order to follow God? 6. How does this allow a person to be good? 7. What one thing is really important to you? What could you gain by giving it away? 8. How can you become good in imitation of God who defines what it is to be good?
