Dear People of St Mary and St. Jude: We are a spiritual home for all generations engaged in the mission of God s love for the world. Welcome to Worship! "Draw near to God and God will draw near to you." James 4:8 Welcome to this Episcopal community of worship. No matter where you come from, or what your circumstances are, we invite you to participate fully in worship in the way you most feel comfortable. Though it is our practice to stand for hymns and to stand or kneel for prayers, please do what is most comfortable for you. Hymns are usually found in the hymnal. Page references are for the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). Both texts are in the pews. All are welcome to receive communion. These are God s gifts for all who believe in Christ and all who yearn to draw closer to him! Thank you for enriching us with your presence. May God bless you on this day! I am writing to offer my heartfelt thanks for the support and encouragement you have offered me in my short time in the parish, all culminating in the joyous celebration of my ordination on the Feast of the Presentation. Many hands came together in the creation of that wonderful night and I thank you all. More broadly, for those close and those far away, I am grateful for the continual welcome and appreciation you show me each Sunday as I minister among you. My time with you has been essential in allowing me to live into my call, and I give thanks to God for the blessing that you have been, and continue to be, in my ministry. Faithfully, John+ 2 15

The First Reading (Please be seated) Deuteronomy 30:15-20 Reader A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy. Moses said, See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 119:1-8 BCP p. 763 1 Happy are they whose way is blameless, * who walk in the law of the LORD! 2 Happy are they who observe his decrees * and seek him with all their hearts! 3 Who never do any wrong, * but always walk in his ways. 4 You laid down your commandments, * that we should fully keep them. 5 Oh, that my ways were made so direct * that I might keep your statutes! 6 Then I should not be put to shame, * when I regard all your commandments. 7 I will thank you with an unfeigned heart, * when I have learned your righteous judgments. 8 I will keep your statutes; * do not utterly forsake me. ~ The Week of February 12 ~ Sunday, February 12 ~ The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany 9 AM - Holy Eucharist, St. Mary s Chapel Sunday School Tuesday, February 14 4:30 PM - Contemplative Prayer, St. Mary s Chapel Thursday, February 16 10 AM - Prayer Shawl Ministry 4:30 PM - Vestry Meeting Saturday, February 18 9:30 AM ~ AA Meeting, Parish Hall Alanon Meeting St. Mary s Chapel Please hold in your prayers: Rose and her family, Hortense Alley, Debbie Balboa, David Hill, Andrea Horner, Lesley, Nellie, Mary Bridget, and Phillip Horvath, Adam Keeler, Harry Madeira, and Sherry Warner. The Invitation to Communion All who are drawn to Christ are welcome to come forward for communion. If you prefer a blessing to receiving the bread and the wine, simply cross your arms over your chest and the priest will bless you. (Gluten Free Wafers are available, please let the celebrant know when you come to the altar rail.) Communion Hymn Let thy Blood in mercy poured Hymn 313 (Please stand as able) The Post-communion Prayer Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ s Body and Blood. Now send us forth a people, forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. Blessing Recessional Hymn Lord, dismiss us with thy blessing Hymn 344 The Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Postlude The Epistle 1 Corinthians 3:1-9 Reader A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? For when one says, I belong to Paul, and another, I belong to Apollos, are you not merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each. For we are God s servants, working together; you are God s field, God s building. Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Please stand as able) Sequence Hymn Blessed Jesus, at thy word Hymn 440 vs. 1-2 The Gospel (Please remain standing) Matthew 5:21-37 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, You shall not murder ; and whoever murders shall be liable to judgment. But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, You fool, you will be liable to the hell of fire. So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser 12 5

may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce. But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord. But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your word be Yes, Yes or No, No ; anything more than this comes from the evil one. Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sequence Hymn Blessed Jesus, at thy word Hymn 440 vs. 3 Sermon The Rev. Jane Cornman The Nicene Creed (Please stand as able) BCP p. 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with St. Mary, St. Jude, and all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Fraction Anthem We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. 6 11

Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing: Celebrant and People Hymn S 130 Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. (The people stand or kneel as able) Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People III BCP p. 387 The Leader and People pray responsively Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. 10 7

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others; we pray for Rose and her family, Hortense Alley, Debbie Balboa, David Hill, Andrea Horner, Lesley, Nellie, Mary Bridget and Phillip Horvath, Adam Keeler, Soos Krasnow, Harry Madeira, and Sherry Warner; for the Dioceses of Lusaka, Central Africa; for the congregations of St. Paul s in Brunswick and St. Alban s in Cape Elizabeth, for our brothers and sisters in our Companion Diocese of Haiti; and for those we now name We give thanks for Nellie Horvath, Nash Johnson, Ephron Catlin and Tony Smith who celebrate their birthdays this week; for all the people and families of our parish, especially Claudine and Ephron Catlin, Helen Clay Chace, Courtney, Kate, Louise, Susannah, and Whit Chaplin, Bevin Cherot, Tanny Clark, and those we now name... Silence The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect. The Confession (please kneel as you are able) Celebrant Let us confess our sins to God. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, know and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Absolution Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Celebrant The peace of Christ be always with you. People And also with you. Announcements The Celebration of Holy Communion Offertory Sentence The plates that are passed throughout the congregation are for your offering of yourself to God this day. Feel free to include money, a note, or any other symbol of your self-offering. The plates will be placed on the altar to be blessed with the bread and the wine. It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, allholy God, source of life and fountain of mercy.
