SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY Palm Sunday April 14, 2019 GATHERING AROUND THE WORD Everlasting God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son to take our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross. In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE BRINGING THE LIGHT *OPENING SENTENCES Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! The Lord be with you. And also with you. PROCLAMATION OF THE ENTRANCE INTO JERUSALEM Luke 19:28-40 *SONG OF PRAISE Hosanna, Loud Hosanna Hymnal, No. 197 *CONFESSION AND PARDON God our Redeemer, we confess that we are people of ashes and dust. We join the parade and shout hosanna, then deny our Lord in his hour of need. We wave the palms and sing praise, then hand our Savior over to die. Forgive us, God of grace. Our lives are in your hand deliver us from evil. Save us, by your steadfast love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Time of Silent reflection)

In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God. *THE PEACE Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. *SONG OF RESPONSE Glory Be to the Father Hymnal No. 581 TIME WITH YOUNG DISCIPLES MOMENT FOR MISSION Joan Cole PROCLAIMING THE WORD PRAYER FOR UNDERSTANDING Charlotte Lovett SCRIPTURE READING Isaiah 50:4-9a Page No. 594 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. RESPONSIVE PSALM Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, His steadfast love endures forever. Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, we beseech you, O Lord! O Lord, we beseech you, give us success! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and he has given us light.

Bind the festal procession with branches, up to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God, I will extol you. O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. ANTHEM Hosanna to the Son of David SCRIPTURE READING Luke 23:1-49 Page No. 859 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. MESSAGE Into Jerusalem Tracy L. Evans *SONG OF FAITH What Wondrous Love is This Hymnal, No. 215 *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH God s reconciling act in Jesus Christ is a mystery which the Scriptures describe in various ways. It is called the sacrifice of a lamb, a shepherd s life given for his sheep, atonement by a priest; again it is ransom of a slave, payment of debt, vicarious satisfaction of a legal penalty, and victory over the powers of evil. These are expressions of a truth which remains beyond the reach of all theory in the depths of God s love for humankind. They reveal the gravity, cost, and sure achievement of God s reconciling work. Adapted from the Confession of 1967, 9.09 SHARING OF JOYS AND CONCERNS Response: Have mercy, O God; hear our prayer. The Lord s Prayer Hymnal, p. 35 THE OFFERING OFFERTORY *DOXOLOGY Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow Hymnal, No. 606 *DEDICATION PRAYER

FOLLOWING THE WORD INTO THE WORLD *SENDING SONG Ride On! Ride On in Majesty! Hymnal, No. 198 *TAKING LIGHT INTO THE WORLD *BLESSING AND CHARGE May the steadfast love of God, the abundant grace of Jesus Christ, and the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit be with you this day and always. Amen. Remember the words of the Lord Jesus: If any wish to be my disciples let them take up the cross and follow me. Amen. *CHORAL BENEDICTION *POSTLUDE *Please rise in body or spirit.
