A Month for Thanksgiving! November begins with All Saints Sunday a day when we remember and give thanks for the lives of those who have gone before us in the faith. We have dedicated Christ the King Sunday November 20th, a day when we celebrate God s sovereignty in our lives as Stewardship Sunday. A day when we ask ourselves how will we respond to God s blessing by challenging ourselves to respond generously in support of the mission He has entrusted to us. This year we have chosen to join with the congregation of All Saints Episcopal and other congregations here in Lakewood to celebrate our national day of Thanksgiving at 10am Thanksgiving Day, November 24th at All Saints Church on Route 9 in Lakewood. Sunday morning November 26 th we begin a new Church year with the lighting of the first Advent candle. In a recent sermon on the story of the ten lepers I emphasized the importance of giving thanks. Reminding us of how quick and persistent we are in asking for God s help, yet how we often lack that same energy in giving thanks. Christians above all must live as thankful people for by God s grace we have been healed, forgiven, and given the gift of eternal life in Christ. In eternal thanksgiving, Pastor McKinley On Nov. 6th

The days are shorter, The air crisp and cool, The children have all, Gone back to school. Page 3 NOVEMBER 6th All Saints' Day celebration has a long history in the worship life of the Christian Church. It began as a commemoration of the martyrs who had died for the faith, and it has since become a day when we honor and remember those who, in death, have joined the Church Triumphant, as well as the faithful saints of the present who serve Jesus Christ. Martin Luther held that all Christians are simultaneously sinner and saint--a sinner because of our rebellious nature, but a saint because of salvation in Jesus. NOVEMBER 20th Christ the King Stewardship Sunday Commitment cards will be collected on this day. A Congregational Budget Meeting will be after the service. NOVEMBER 26th Hanging of the Greens 3:30 PM Pizza & Refreshments will be served Join us for the 5:30 service afterwards! As we enter the Advent Season!

Page 7 New ELCA Credit Union Is Now Open The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has recently opened a federal credit union to serve your financial needs. You can access the credit union by logging on to the credit union s website, elcafcu.org. The credit union opened its doors in early June to give ELCA members an alterna ve in banking. It is the first financial ministry of the ELCA to offer consumer loans including auto loans and personal loans. As a non-for-profit financial coopera ve, the credit union exists to serve its members not to make a profit. Earnings are returned to members through more compe ve rates on deposits and loans, fewer fees and enhanced services, say Chief Opera ons Officer Luis Reyes. Suppor ng the ELCA s Mission Crea on of this ELCA-sponsored credit union supports the ELCA s mission to promote wise stewardship of members financial resources. While the ELCA Federal Credit Union is a separated en ty from the ELCA church wide organiza ons, the credit union will operate with the church s mission and values in mind, says the Rev. Arnold Pierson, president of the credit union. When you choose to par cipate in the ELCA Federal Credit Union, you will work with a financial ins tu on that is rooted in your faith community. This is a socially responsible way to do your banking. Who Can Join & What Services are Available Currently, individual members of the ELCA can join the ELCA Federal Credit Union by opening a savings account with a $25 deposit and maintaining that $25 balance. A more complex, robust online banking system necessary for congrega ons and ministries allowing for authoriza on of signers will allow those organiza ons to par cipate in 2017. Credit union members have access to any array of financial products and services, including: savings accounts, checking accounts, cer ficates of deposit, auto loans, personal loans, and credit and debit cards. Members have free ATM access through a worldwide network of ATMs, and deposits are insured up to $250,000. Auto loans start as low as 1.99% APR (annual percentage rate) for qualified buyers. Credit card interest rates start as low as 7.99% APR, and the credit union does not charge transac on fees for balance transfers or cash advances. Members also get the convenience of online banking, online bill payment, e-statements, a mobile app, direct deposit, account-to-account transfer to link with your accounts at other financial ins tu ons and person-toperson fund transfers. Learn more and become a member of the credit union by visi ng its website, elcafcu.org.

Page 8 Autumn Is Autumn is a mellow time, All red and brown and gold, A time of ripened beauty, Before the winter s cold. A sad time of departing, The birds, the flowers, the leaves, For quietly reflecting - And savoring memories. Autumn is a feeling, When summer s almost past, A longing grasp for special things, That you know will not last. A coolness stirring in the air, Reminds that winter nears, Autumn is a mixture then Of beauty tinged with tears. -By Louise Amanda Ritchie (Mother of Lisa McLain) Blessing of the Animals Thanksgiving News Special thanks go once again to Jim Wolfer for his care of property matters, among other things he finished the laying of the blocks under the new benches we recently dedicated. Also to Scott Brown, who will taking over from Janice Henry as Administrator of the food pantry and for the work both he and his wife, Kim did to help us get ready for our 90th Anniversary. Due to the inclement weather, there was only one car with 3 animals who came for the Blessing of the Animals. Next year we will be moving back to Sunday morning. A Community Thanksgiving Service will be held this year at All Saints Episcopal Church, 213 Madison Ave. (Rt.9) here in Lakewood, on Thanksgiving day November 24th at 10:00 AM. This is a chance to join with other Christians in our community and will replace our service here at Immanuel Lutheran.
