There is a tendency among Catholics to live more and more with less and less connection with the Church. It has happened to the youth - but it is now happening, more and more, among the middle and older generations. Some become Event Catholics who use the church for baptisms, first communions weddings and funerals because it s a family tradition - but live the rest of their life at a distance from it. They did not set out with distance from the Church as a goal - but that's where they've arrived at. The logical outcome of such distancing will be the rapid diminishing of long standing Church communities, such as St. Barnabas! That s a fact! Can we allow St. Barnabas to become a community where only the elderly are found? Today is Catechetical Sunday. A sincere thanks to all those involved in Christian formation in our community. The continuance of the faith depends in great measure on YOU and on the quality of the religious education and formation YOU provide. May we never lose heart but always be willing to sow the seeds of faith, to help another person discover a personal relationship with the Lord. This is the purpose of Church and the goal of salvation history. The world at its worst needs the Church at its best. In welcoming Pope Francis this week we welcome a great ambassador of the Church. As teacher, social builder, evangelizer and voice for justice and peace he encourages those who continue to practice their faith and maybe his visit will sow a few seeds among those who stand at a distance. September 15, 2015 Hi everyone! This is the page for St Barnabas Life Teen. I m Peggy Harnisch your youth minister!! Hi Everyone, This is such and exciting week coming up with the visit of the Holy Father, Pope Francis to the United States. He will be visiting Washington DC, New York and Philadelphia. Maybe you know people who have been lucky enough to have tickets for one of the events. Here s why I think this Papal visit is so important especially to our youth and especially if you do not get to see him. Good roles models can be hard to find. Society celebrates people for reasons of wealth, status and looks. Society almost never celebrates people for character or service to others. Pope Francis has shown from the beginning that we need to examine our lives and how we live. Think about it, the most famous religious leader in the world does not want to be driven around in limousines or live in an opulent palace. He continually reminds us that happiness does not come from these things, but in service to the poor and vulnerable. In the Gospel today we find the apostles secretly arguing over who is the greatest and Jesus, the second person in the Blessed Trinity reminds them they are here to serve. For Catholics everywhere and especially Catholic youth it is a great time of pride in being a Catholic. It can be hard to share your faith in a high school setting but conversations will undoubtedly come up this week about Pope Francis. Be proud of who you are as young Catholics! You can change the world for the better! Have a blessed week! Peggy Dates to remember!!!
