GEne FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH DAY OF PENTECOST June 4, 2017 *for those who wish to stand Bold print indicates congregational participation GATHERING AROUND GOD S WORD PRELUDE WELCOME Robert Justus LITANY FOR PENTECOST One: Holy Spirit, Creator, in the beginning you moved over the waters. From your breath all creation drew life. Without you, life turns to dust. All: Come, Holy Spirit! One: Holy Spirit, Counselor, by your inspiration, the prophets spoke and acted in faith. You clothed them in power to be bearers of your Word. All: Come, Holy Spirit! One: Holy Spirit, Power, you came as fire to Jesus disciples; you gave them voice before the rulers of this world. All: Come, Holy Spirit! One: Holy Spirit, Sanctifier, you created us children of God; you make us the living temple of your presence; you intercede within us with sighs too deep for words. All: One: All: Come, Holy Spirit! Holy Spirit, Giver of life, you guide and make holy the church you create; you give gifts the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and fortitude, the spirit of knowledge and piety, the spirit of the fear of the Lord, that the whole creation may become what you want it to be. Come, Holy Spirit! *OPENING HYMN Come Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove #279

CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith. We confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our timid lives by the power of your Spirit, and fill us with a flaming desire to be your faithful people, doing your will for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. ASSURANCE OF PARDON PASSING OF THE PEACE SUNG RESPONSE TO PARDON Gloria Patri #581 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. WELCOME THE CHILDREN This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshiping throng. Water, God s Word, bread and cup, prayer, and song: This is where children belong. CHILDREN S TIME Shelby Dickson (Children may now be seated with their parents or those 5 and younger may leave for the nursery) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION PROCLAIMING GOD S WORD 1 ST SCRIPTURE READING Numbers 11:24-30 (pg. 182, OT) One: This is the Word of the Lord. Amen. HYMN Every Time I Feel the Spirit #66 INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE SEALING GOD S WORD: THE EUCHARIST THE PRAYER OF GREAT THANKSGIVING One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. One: It is truly right who forever sing to the glory of your name: All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. One: You are holy, O God of majesty and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. Great is the mystery of faith: All: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

SUMMER SOUL-STICE SERIES Do Justice...Love Mercy...Are You Kidding?! First Presbyterian Church is sponsoring its sixth Summer Soul-stice Series. The theme for this year s program arose out of the separateness and polarization we, our friends, the community, the state, the country, the world seem to be in these days. Whose side are you on and if you're on the other side, you're flat-out wrong! So how do we talk with each other, how do we listen to each other, how do we love one another even in our differences? The series hopes to explore these questions from several standpoints through the eyes of an artist, a psychologist, a theologian, and activists involved in two community outreach programs based on restorative justice principles. What does the Lord require of us?! The Series for 2017 includes: June 6 June 20 July 11 July 25 August 8 9:30 AM, Salina Art Center Warehouse, 149 S. 4 th Engaging Through Expression led by Matthew Burke 9:30 AM, First Presbyterian Church Chapel Living With Differences led by Paula Fried 12 noon, First Presbyterian Church Chapel Finding Justice. Offering Mercy led by Janell Murphy & Ann Zimmerman 12 noon, First Presbyterian Church Chapel Looking For The Divine. What Would Jesus Do? led by Father Frank Coady 12 noon, First Presbyterian Church Chapel Reaching Out From Within led by LaNay Meier, Diana Smith & Gerald Gillespie FEATURING RIVER FESTIVAL ARTIST: MATTHEW BURKE June 6-9:30 AM, Salina Art Center Warehouse, 149 S. 4 th Matthew Burke, Salina Art Center's Artist-In-Residence and Smoky Hill River Festival Artist: The expression of meaning is a basic human need, whether being an artist or non-artist. The impulse to express meaning, which is creativity, is a natural desire. Is the unifying experience of being around art and making art a model for merciful engagement with the world? Is there actually a divide between any two of us? CONTACT: MARTHA RHEA (785) 825-9320 or marhea43@gmail.com SYDNEY SODERBERG (785) 827-3225 or sydsod@gmail.com
