Tidings Emory United Methodist Church Pastor Taysie Phillips 1600 Emory Road, Upperco, MD 21155, 410-429-6008 Church Office E-Mail: churchoffice@emoryunitedmethodist.org Pastor s E-Mail: taysie5@comcast.net Pastor s Phone: (C) 301-639-4670 www.emoryunitedmethodist.org March 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK My goodness is it March already? But I see the tiny white flowers called glories of the snow under a few trees, and have heard of yards full of purple crocuses. And Easter lilies! I ve even heard reports of Spring Peepers those little frogs you hear around ponds and wet areas in the spring. And Spring means Easter is coming! Emory UMC is bustling with Easter plans. The choir, under the guidance of our Beverly Gandolfo, is busy practicing their Easter Cantata. Truly Emory is a church blessed with wonderful music! Alex Obriecht is working out all the details of a beautiful Holy Thursday service. Bob Bradford and the Emory Players are rehearsing the Good Friday play. Let s take a minute to look at the true meaning of Easter. What is all this excitement about? 2 Corinthians 5:17b-18: The old things have gone away, and look, new things have arrived! All of these things are from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and who gave us the ministry of reconciliation. The very word atonement could be thought of as an at-one-ment. Atonement is a word that was coined early in the sixteenth century by Matthew Tyndale, in order to convey the biblical notions of reconciliation, redemption, and expiation. *

While there are various theories on exactly how Jesus did this, the important thing to remember is that it is a reconciliation between God and humans, a coming back together into the perfect harmony that was always intended. We can come to know God, to be in relationship with God. We can have a new life, a new way of living. That is exciting news! And even as we are reconciled to God, note that we are to have ministries of reconciliation ourselves. 2 Corinthians 5:20: So we are ambassadors who represent Christ. You are an ambassador for Jesus the Christ! Is there anyone in your life you need to be reconciled to? Are you hanging onto an old grudge is God nudging you to let go of old hurts and sufferings, in order to allow the new life to be fuller and richer in you? Take this season of Lent as an opportunity to examine your heart, and to be fully reconciled to God. And to be reconciled to anyone in your life where there has been separation. Pray about it let the Holy Spirit bring any names or situations to your mind as you pray. May our Lord Jesus richly bless you during this season of Lent! Amen! Pastor Taysie *Essential Theological Terms, Justo L. Gonzalez, p 20. U.M.W. NEWS Reminder: there are nuts (baking and eating), candy & fruitcake still available. Thank you for supporting this fundraiser. UMW Game Night March 4, Friday- 6pm. Lite dinner, snacks and dessert. All women and female guests invited!! Maryland Faith Community Health Network (MFCHN) 1. We are joining the launch of a new program to bridge and connect hospitals and places of worship to improve the health care of Marylanders. 2. Hospitals included in this program are (Carroll, Northwest & Sinai). Hospital navigators and volunteer liaisons (from our church) will work together to provide the best care for our church members. With the patient s consent, our faith leader will be notified when a member of our congregation is admitted to the hospital, then a trained liaison from our Emory UMC will work with hospital navigators to provide support to patients and their families, which could range from prayer, transportation and providing meals to referring them to trusted professionals in the community. Patients will have control over what information will be shared with their liaison.
