Looking Unto Jesus - Our example In Love - Sunday Pm Hebrews 12:2 Introduction A. By the vast majority, the term love is thought of as a romantic, sentimental, or subjective feeling. We say I love my wife, I love my mother, I love apple pie I love football I love my truck or I love God... B. The term can be used in a lot of different ways in the C. Jesus is our perfect example of how treat others: 1. What is The Nature of The Love Christ Had For Others? 2. What Did Jesus Love Motivate Him To Do? 3. Are We Willing To Love Like Jesus Loved? D. Defining Love: 1. Four Greek words translated love a. Philia or Phileo- Friendly love - More nearly represents tender affection the love of close friends or brothers b. Storge or Stergein Natural love - the love of family c. Eros - carnal or sexual love - Not used in New Testament. d. Agape or Agapao - love which seeks the highest good of others (1) Love which is awakened by a sense of value in an object which causes one to prize it... It is a love of esteem and approbation (Weust). Act of the will not emotion - (2) Further examination of the term AGAPE love (a) The one being loved does not have to earn it... (b) Is not an exclusive love, (c) A caring love, - i.e. involved in the needs of others (d) Is not an uncontrolled reaction of the heart, but a concentrated exercise of will II. What Is The Nature of Christ s Love? A. Expressed to Those Who Did Not Deserve It!! Mark 10:21; Luke 19:41; Mat. 23:37; Rom. 5:8; 1. Mark 10:21 (NKJV) Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." 2. Luke 19:41 (NKJV) Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 3. Matthew 23:37 (NKJV) "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 4. Romans 5:8 (NKJV) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. B. Not Exclusive - Mat. 5:44-48; Luke 6:32-35; 23:34 1. Matthew 5:44-48 (NKJV) But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, [45] that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. [46] For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? [47] And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? [48] Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. 2. Luke 6:32-35 (NKJV) But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. [33] And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. [34] And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. [35] But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and Page 1 of 5

your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 3. Luke 23:34 (NKJV) Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." And they divided His garments and cast lots. C. A Caring Love, - Mat 9:35-38; 15:32; Luke 7:11-15; John 11:33-35 1. Matthew 9:35-38 (NKJV) Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. [36] But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. [37] Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. [38] Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." 2. Matthew 15:32 (NKJV) Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, "I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way." 3. Luke 7:11-15 (NKJV) Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. [12] And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. [13] When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." [14] Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." [15] So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. 4. John 11:33-35 (NKJV) Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. [34] And He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to Him, "Lord, come and see." [35] Jesus wept. D. Concentrated Exercise of Will Mark 1:40,41; Luke 19:10; Mat 26:39 1. Mark 1:40-41 (NKJV) Now a leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him and saying to Him, "If You are willing, You can make me clean." [41] Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, "I am willing; be cleansed." 2. Luke 19:10 (NKJV) for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." 3. Matthew 26:39 (NKJV) He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." III. What Did Jesus Love Motivate Him To Do? A. Taught & Healed!! Matthew 4:23; 9:35; Mark 6:6 1. His main mission was to preach the gospel of the kingdom He also confirmed that message by miraculous works. However The motive for teaching and healing ultimately was LOVE!! a. Matthew 4:23 (NKJV) And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. b. Matthew 9:35 (NKJV) Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. c. Mark 6:6 (NKJV) And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching. B. Fed The Needy Mat. 14:13-21; 15:32-39 1. The feeding of the groups of five and four thousand had nothing to do with attempting to draw a crowd or provide an opportunity for a social get together but rather to provide for a need. Page 2 of 5

a. Matthew 14:14 (NKJV) And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.... [16] But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat." [17] And they said to Him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish." [18] He said, "Bring them here to Me."... [21] Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children. b. Matthew 15:32-34 (NKJV) Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, "I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way." [33] Then His disciples said to Him, "Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?" [34] Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven, and a few little fish."... [38] Now those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 2. The people had been following Jesus and were hungry for they had put listening to Jesus above food. Instead of dispersing the faithful crowd to fend for themselves He provided for them so that they would not faint in the way. C. Did Good Acts 10:38 1. He WENT about doing GOOD a. Acts 10:38 (NKJV) how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. b. John 10:32 (NKJV) Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?" D. Went to the Cross John 15:13; Eph 5:2; 1 John 4:7-11 1. The greatest manifestation of the Love Jesus had for us is seen in the fact that He went to the cross! a. John 15:13 (NKJV) Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends. b. Ephes. 5:2 (NKJV) And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. c. 1 John 4:7-11 (NKJV) Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. [8] He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. [9] In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. [10] In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. [11] Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. IV. Are We Willing To Love Like Jesus? A. If We Love Like Jesus Loved Then We Too Will: 1. Express it to Those Who Do Not Deserve It!! Rom 12:14,20,21 a. Romans 12:14 (NKJV) Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.... [20] Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head." [21] Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. 2. Not Exclusively - Luke 6:27-36; Mat. 5:44-48 a. Luke 6:27-36 (NKJV) "But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, [28] bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. [29] To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. [30] Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. [31] And just as you want Page 3 of 5

men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. [32] But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. [33] And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. [34] And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. [35] But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. [36] Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. 3. A Caring Love, - 1 John 3:17,18 a. 1 John 3:17-18 (NKJV) But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? [18] My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 4. Concentrated Exercise of Will 1 Thes 4:9,10; a. 1Thes. 4:9-10 (NKJV) But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; [10] and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more; b. John 15:12 (NKJV) This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. c. 1 John 3:23 (NKJV) And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment. d. 1 John 4:21 (NKJV) And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also. B. What Has Our Love Motivated Us To DO? 1. Are we growing equipping ourselves to teach others? Mat. 9:37,38; Acts 8:4 a. Matthew 9:37-38 (NKJV) Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. [38] Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." b. Acts 8:4 (NKJV) Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. 2. Are We Doing What We Can To Aide The Needy Eph. 4:28; 1 Tim 6:18 a. Ephes. 4:28 (NKJV) Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. b. 1 Tim. 6:18 (NKJV) Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, 3. Doing Good Mat. 25:34-36; Titus 3:1; 2 Tim 2:5 a. Matthew 25:34-36 (NKJV) Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: [35] for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; [36] I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.' b. Titus 3:1 (NKJV) Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, c. 2 Tim. 2:5 (NKJV) And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 4. Give Ourselves 1 Jn 3:16,17 a. 1 John 3:16-17 (NKJV) By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. [17] But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? Page 4 of 5

C. Our Love Is:??? 1. A Conscious Decision - ("put on love") - Col 3:14 a. Col. 3:12-15 (NKJV) Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; [13] bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. [14] But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. [15] And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 2. To Be Constant - ("walk in love") - Ep 5:2 a. Ephes. 5:1-2 (NKJV) Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. [2] And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. 3. To Be Our Motive - ( serve from love") - 1 Co 16:14; Ga 5:13 a. 1 Cor. 16:14 (NKJV) Let all that you do be done with love. b. Galatians 5:13 (NKJV) For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 4. To Be Our Glue - ("knit together in love") - Col 2:2; 3:14; 1 Cor. 8:1 a. Col. 2:2 (NKJV) that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, b. Col. 3:14 (NKJV) But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. c. 1 Cor. 8:1 (NKJV) Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. V. Conclusion A. The Love Jesus Had For Us Was: 1. Undeserved 2. Self-Less 3. Sacrificial 4. Active 5. Heart Felt 6. REAL!! B. Are We Willing To Love Like Jesus???? C. What if every member of this Congregation LOVED LIKE Jesus loved? Page 5 of 5
