of FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH First UMC FREE Back-2-School Meal Thursday August 16th 4:30-6:30 p.m. Bring your family out for a FREE meal before or after you meet your teachers at Back-to-School night! On the menu: BBQ s, chips, apple slices, carrots and lemonade! First UMC After School Kids Club back in action beginning Wednesday, August 22 I can't believe how fast the summer is going! Soon all the vacations and travels will be winding down and the kids will be heading off to school. Our After School Kids Club will start again in full force on Wednesday August 22nd! Last year we had 11-13 children in attendance each Wednesday. I'm hoping to have as many children again or maybe even increase the number! Once again I am asking for donations for their snacks. Snack crackers, cookies, rice krispy bars, jello and pudding cups, baby carrots, string cheese, grapes, apples and clementine oranges are the favorite. A few times last year I made their snack into a Bible lesson, such as using goldfish crackers, pretzels and pull apart twizzlers to make fishing poles catching fish (I will make you fishers of men)...or 2 goldfish and 5 pieces of croutons/bread (feeding of 5,000) etc. It brought the stories to life for the kids! My plans are to do the same this year, along with weekly Bible verses, continuing the Lords Prayer, Ten Commandments and Books of the Bible. They will also have time to read and do their homework (which doesn't seem quite as bad when you have someone else doing it with you!). Thank you again for the privilege to lead the After School Kids Club. Blessings! Kathy Burket Men s Steak Fry and Sweet Corn Feed Sunday, August 26 ~ 6:00 p.m. on the church lawn Bonding with the guys and a short inspirational message by Matt Lundeen. Enjoy fellowship and good food as you feast on a mouth-watering steak grilled to perfection, juicy sweet corn smothered in butter, savory baked beans and good old-fashioned apple crisp for dessert. Sign up in the lobby or with Kirby Josephson before August 19.

A new swimming pool was built in my hometown when I was a kid. I didn t know how to swim. When it opened I could stay in the shallow end and watch people use the diving boards on the deep end. I wanted to go deeper. But to go deeper I had to be willing to learn and trust others to help me. Do you desire to go deeper in your faith? Are you open to allowing others to support you in experiencing God in new ways? Five people from our church; Kathy Burket, Jeanette Cornell, Jim & Karen Boots and Gail Bielen, participated in a three day spiritual retreat called Walk to Emmaus. Walk to Emmaus. Those words still make me smile. For me it was a time of self discovery, faith strengthening and very freeing. Learning to let go and let God, trusting God in every aspect of your life and extending Gods grace through you to your family, friends and community. I'm so very glad that I attended Walk to Emmaus. It's an experience I will never forget said Kathy Burket about her Walk to Emmaus experience. What happens on this 3-day weekend? You will enjoy three days of singing, learning, laughing, worshiping, reflecting, praying and participating in small groups. Discussions center around fifteen talks given by laity and clergy. These talks present the theme of God's grace, how that grace comes alive in the Christian community and how it is expressed to the world. You'll also discover how grace is real in your life, how you live a life of grace, and how you bring that grace to others. And surprises. Good surprises-truly. This past year these retreats took place in Mankato, Paynesville and Inwood, IA from Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon. If you re wondering about physical demands- most of the time is spent around tables. (Probably it should be named Sit and Eat to Emmaus.) Walk to Emmaus is a life-changing experience for many people. It is a time of rediscovering why it is not boring to be a Christian. Sure, it is a weekend. Yes, you won t know everybody there. If your personality needs a lot of upfront details, many of those details you ll be asked to put on hold. You will come away from Walk to Emmaus with a fresh perspective and no, you won t be bored. Really, you won t be. Intrigued? Take a gander at the Minnesota Walk to Emmaus website. There are brochures in the church lobby with some information as well. Weekends are scheduled for Thursday evening, October 25 th Sunday afternoon, October 28 th for men and November 1-4 for women at Paynesville (Koronis), January 17-20, 24-27 at Mankato and April 25-28, May 2-5 at Koronis. Ready to go? Contact Sandy or myself (644-2000) or any of those who have already gone. Sandy and I went to a similar experience called Unidos en Cristos which has a broader denominational participation. Those weekends are October 18 th -21 st and 25 th -28 th in Minnetonka. Pastor Randy

Volunteers and Donations needed for Back 2 School Night! Education There is a need for just a few more volunteers to help with the evening meal served on Thursday, August 16. Volunteers who signed up with Connect Groups will assist with food preparation beginning at 2:00 p.m. that day and also serving, greeting and clean up beginning at 4:15 p.m. This year a grant was applied for through Thrivent Action Grant program for our Back 2 School night to serve a light evening meal to busy parents and children who are registering for classes at school that evening. A $250 gift card was received from Thrivent to purchase many of the food items served. We are only in need of 12 boxes/bags of potato chips. Sign up sheets are in the lobby, or contact the office by email at umcrwf@ redred.com or phone at 507-644-2000. Thank you! Volunteers Needed Teachers are needed for all ages of Sunday School this Fall classes to begin late September. For more information about how you can be part of this ministry, contact Renee Estebo at 507-430-6287 or Karin Ramey at 507-227-4980. I Will Will you be loyal to the United Methodist Church and uphold it by your prayers, your presence, your gifts and your service? I will. Two small words- I will. Yet with those words a different relationship is formed with your church. I believe we can only make commitments through the grace of God who provides us with what we need to carry through and extends forgiveness when we fail to follow through with our intentions. On Sunday, August 19th it is my hope to welcome people as full members of First United Methodist Church. If this is something you would like to do, I would enjoy talking with you to answer your questions and see how God is prompting you as you make decisions. Would you please contact me before August 13 th? You can call the church (507-644-2000) or send an email pastorrandy@redred.com Church Picnic Fun ~ July 18 ~ Sponsored by Congregational Life
