( Strong, Systematic Theology) Who is God to you? (discuss) THE ONE GOD The book of Isaiah expresses most clearly that Israel s God is one and unique- Isaiah 45:5-6,14-25;46:5-9;44:6,8 The New Testament (N.T.)-The heart of the N. T. message is the proclamation of what God has accomplished through Jesus Christ. However, God is still one- 1Cor.8:5-6; Eph. 4:6; James 2:19 Senior Pastor 1
THE ONE GOD Old Testament ( O. T.)- The God of the Hebrew Bible is ultimately a one and only God; there is no God beside him. Shema ( to hear ) the basic statement of the Jewish law- Deut. 6:4-9. Jesus quotes the Shema in Mark 12:29 THE GODHEAD Defined- a word used with reference to God when one speaks of God s divine nature. Also, as used in theology, the term means the supreme being, especially as comprehending all his attributes or qualities There is nothing to compare the Godhead to (Isaiah 40:18; Romans 1:20; 1 Tim. 3:16) God and the Godhead The Godhead is Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. God has revealed himself as the Father in creation, the Son in redemption and the Holy Spirit in inspiration and indwelling his people. THE GODHEAD The Father is God The Son is God The Holy Spirit is God GOD THE FATHER The Father is God ( Rom.1:7,Gal.1:1) The term expresses the intimate, loving relationship that God has with: 1) his one of a kind son Jesus 2) believers 3) all persons He is the Father of all persons by creation (Is. 64:8, Matt. 6:44-45) He is the Father of believers through adoption and begetting (John. 8:41-44 Gal.3:26;Rom.8:16,23) GOD THE FATHER As Father he is a disciplinarian { Heb. 12:7}, loves his children {1 John 3:1-2}, meets their needs {Eph.1:3, Rom.8:32}, gives revelation {Eph.3:17}, protects { Jn. 10:27-29}, sacrifices { Jn.10:17-18}, never leaves he is a keeper {John 17:9-12} Senior Pastor 3
THIS WEEK SEPTEMBER 19, 2017 GOD THE SON GOD THE SON The Son is not the Father { Is.9:6; Eph 1:3; John 10:27-29} The Son s unity with the Father { Jn.14:10; 8:18-28 agent son and sender Father} The Son s Hypostatic union with the Father {Jn.10:30; Heb. 1:1-8} Two natures yet only one person in perfect harmony with each other. GOD THE SON The Son reveals the Father { John 1:1-3,14, 18;14:6-13; Phil. 2:5-10} The Father reveals the Son-Mt.3:17;Mk.1:7 The Son exercised all the prerogatives of Deity {Col.1:16-17; Mk.4:35-41,5:2-13 Lk.24:50-53; Jn.5:18-23;} The Son receives prayer- Jn.14:13;Col.3:17 GOD THE SON The Son is our mediator / advocate {1Tim.2:5;Rev.12:10; 1John 2:1} The Son is our intercessor { Heb. 7:25} The Son keeps the believer { Jn. 10:28} The Son is coming back for believers { 1 Thess. 4:14-17} GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Spirit is the manifestation of the divine presence and power perceptible especially in prophetic inspiration ( ABC). Greek- Holy{hagios} Spirit { pneuma} The Holy Spirit is equated with God in the Bible {Gen 1:2, Ps. 139:7-10; Acts 5:3-4} The same Spirit but many names{mat.3:16, Luke 4:18,Phil.1:19; Jn.14:15-17} Senior Pastor 5
GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Spirit is to glorify Christ ( Jn.16:12-15) Christ is the head of the Church, which is his body ( Eph.1:22) but his body is made up of Spirit Filled believers ( 1Cor.12:13) The Father gave the Son ( Jn.3:16); The Son gave his life voluntarily (Jn.10:17-18) and he also gave gifts to the church (Eph.4:7-13) and the Holy Spirit divides the gifts ( 1Cor.12:1-11) GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT WHAT THE HOLY SPIRIT DOES He convicts people of sin { Jn.16:7-13 what else? } He indwells the believer {Jn. 3:5,7:37-39 Rom 8:9 what else? vs.14-16 } He places the believer into the body of Christ { 1 Cor. 12:13} He seals the believer unto the day of redemption { Eph.1:13-14 what else? } GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT WHAT THE HOLY SPIRIT DOES He empowers the believer for service { Ex. 31:1-5; Acts 1:8; 1 Cor. 12:7-12} He grieves over our sins { Eph. 4:30} He intercedes on behalf of the believer {Rom. 8:24-27} He raises believers from the dead { Rom. 8:11} Senior Pastor 6
Orthodox Trinitarianism It means that there are three eternal distinctions in the divine essence, known respectively as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit They are one in substance and three in subsistence Coequal, coeternal, - John 17:5 MODAL TRINITARIANISM Paw- We fully believe the mystery of the Godhead. We believe that Jesus was both huiman and divine, and further, that the Godhead be understood to mean all the fullness of God (Col.1:19 & 2:9). We believe that Jesus was Mary s son and Mary s God, Creator and creature, God manifest in the flesh. Senior Pastor 7
MODAL TRINITARIANISM PAW That the flesh of Jesus was the same as ours, with the exception that it had no sin; that Jesus was the eternal Father made visible, apart from there is no God. We believe that at the final consummation of all things there will be only God, and that will be our Lord Jesus Christ. THE GODHEAD CONCLUSION No denomination has the total truth on understanding the godhead. The relationship between the three will forever be a mystery but in the final analysis there is only one God. Our belief follows the teaching of 1Timothy 3:16 and Hebrews 10:5-6, that is in Christ, God was manifested in the flesh Senior Pastor 8
