P 4 O 18, 2015 Welcome to the House of the Lord As you saw last weekend, our beautiful new mosaic in the Narthex now welcomes all parishioners, guests, and visitors to our parish church. Although it is not quite finished and still has the protective plastic covering, this colorful mosaic has already brought new life to the entrance to the church. The central theme of the mosaic is Welcome to the House of the Lord, which serves as an invitation to remember that we are entering God s house when we cross the doorway of the Church. The primary symbol is a set of hands that come from above. First, they symbolize the gratuitous nature of God in sending His only Son to save us by His hands. The hands also express what is most familiar in our gestures of communication. The open hands demonstrate Eucharistic hospitality, peace, and intimacy. The hands also symbolize the humble condescension of Christ to take on our human nature. The hands bear the wounds of the crucifixion, Christ s passion and death for our salvation. The hands hold the gifts of wheat and grapes to honor the Creator of heaven and earth. These gifts affirm the goodness of the fruits of the earth and the work of those who till the soil. The Didache, an early Christian text from the first century, declares, You created all things to the glory of your name and gave humans the satisfaction of food and drink for their enjoyment so that they give you thanks. But to us you gave spiritual food and drink and eternal life by your Servant. Thus, the wheat and the grapes also symbolize the Eucharist, the sacrificial banquet, by which bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. These elements are also visible in the tabernacle in the main Church and in the parish banner used for the annual Eucharistic Congress. Behind the hands is a gold flowered cross, the instrument of Christ s passion and death for our salvation and the root of our faith. Everyone who enters our Church will pass the cross of Christ as a reminder that we are joined to Christ by His glorious cross, the reason for our gathering as community in which we proclaim Christ crucified (1 Corinthians 1:23). The flowered cross reminds us of the full depth of the Paschal Mystery. The flowered cross is a symbol of Christian joy, since it is only through the cross that Jesus rises from the dead and offers us new life. At each Eucharistic celebration, we are able to enter into not only the suffering and death, but also the resurrection of Jesus, a source of great hope. The rays of light emanating from the center of the mosaic remind us that Jesus calls us to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). It is also a reminder of what we do as we gather as Church, If we walk in the light as he is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of his Son Jesus cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7). The red and white bands surrounding the mosaic is reminiscent of the red and white circles in the center of the stained glass windows that are behind the altar. These bands are the reminder of the blood and water that flowed from Christ s side as he hung upon the cross (See John 19:34). This mosaic is the central image in our Narthex and ties in with the colors of the stained glass windows in Church. All four major liturgical colors are also present in the mosaic. The mosaic s circular shape complements the circular shape of our baptismal font. It was placed where we will welcome children and their families for the Sacrament of Baptism, inquirers for the Rite of Acceptance as part of the RCIA, and our beloved deceased for the final time at the Mass of Christian Burial. At all of these occasions, God welcomes us to His house where we find strength, comfort, and community.

Spiritual Adoption Month 1 Hey, you will never guess what happened to me--i am huge! I am 10,000 times bigger than I was last month. That is like you growing to be as tall as a 30- floor building and as wide as a football field. I must be 1/4 inch long already! Something is going on inside me too, my chest started moving back and forth and then this red stuff started going all over inside me. I also have things growing out of my shoulders and hips--they look little plants and each one has five leaves or fruits or something growing out of the end of them. Pretty cool! St Vincent de Paul Society October 18- Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time: In the Gospel today Jesus tells his disciples: Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest; whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all. When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you give hope to your neighbors who have nothing OUR DONATION BOX IS LOCATED IN THE BRICK PILLAR UNDER THE PICTURE OF ST. Page 6 October 18, 2015 Faith Formation Interested in becoming Catholic? Are you someone who is searching for faith? Are you someone who has never been baptized? Are you someone who has been baptized in another Christian faith tradition and are now interested in the Catholic faith? Are you someone who was baptized in the Catholic faith, but did not receive First Communion and/or Confirmation? If you answered Yes to one of these questions, then RCIA or the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is for you! It is the Catholic Church s way of initiating new members. Through Sunday Mass and weekly gatherings, those attending gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the Catholic beliefs and practices. All are welcome, and there is no obligation to make any commitment. The next gathering will take place on Wednesday, October 21 at 7:00pm in Haut Hall. For more information, contact Vincent Reilly, Director of Faith Formation at 264-0577 or email vreilly@stctherineop.com. Due to the ongoing maintenance and upda ng of our Parish database, the final touches are being made to our Parish Directory. We hope to have the directory printed and distributed to those who posed for photographs shortly. You Can Understand the Bible! Reading the Bible should bring us closer to Christ, but understanding it is often difficult. The good news is that you can understand the Bible, and The Bible Timeline makes it easy. If you want a better understanding of our faith, and a deeper relationship with God, join us for The Bible Timeline Study, on Tuesdays, beginning October 27 at 10:00am or 7:30pm. The study will include a series of twenty-four videos presented by Jeff Cavins. Each video will be preceded by a lively group discussion. Everyone who participates will receive a color-coded Bible Timeline Chart as well as a The Bible Timeline Study Kit. Two sessions on Tuesdays beginning October 27 at 10:00am or 7:30pm. Cost: $45.00 for workbook and materials. Scholarships available. Register today! Brochure and registration forms available in the Narthex Religious Education Join us for our World mission Rosary during the Sunday, October 18 th Religious Education classes beginning at 8:40am in the formation courtyard. All are welcome! In February of 1951, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen (national director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith from 1950 to 1966), in a The Catholic Hour radio address, inaugurated a World Mission Rosary. We must pray, and not for ourselves, but for the world. To this end, I have designed the World Mission Rosary. Each of the five decades is of a different color to represent the continents. Praying this Rosary, Archbishop Sheen said, would aid the Holy Father and his Society for the Propagation of the Faith by supplying him with practical support, as well as prayers, for the poor mission territories of the world. GREEN for the forests and grasslands of AFRICA; BLUE for the ocean surrounding the ISLANDS OF THE PACIFIC; WHITE symbolizing EUROPE, the seat of the Holy Father, shepherd of the world; RED calling to mind the fire of faith that brought missionaries to the AMERICAS; YELLOW, the morning light of the East, for ASIA. Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, encouraged everyone to intensify your praying of the Rosary to obtain from the Lord those graces that the Church and humanity especially need." Registration is still available online at www.stcatherineop.com or at the Parish Office. Registration for sacraments has ended. Registration for all other classes ends 11/6/2015. For more information, contact Robyn Spencer at (904) 264-0577 x321 or religioused@stcatherineop.com
