FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME! SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION Dear Friends in Christ, God knows everything He is Omniscient, all-knowing. In His Direct Will He causes things to occur; in His Permissive Will He allows things to occur. He knows what we will do, how we will react because He knows all things. He has intervened in our lives by His Direct Will to assist us in using our Free Wills properly. He never, however, will take that Free Will of ours away it is part of our dignity as human beings. So, Job has a Free Will. He has made certain choices in his life and he is sure he has not sinned and that God is not punishing him. He is the typical man about whom many books have been written with the theme: Why do bad things happen to good people? Why then are bad things happening to this good man? We are affected by the choices of others Satan, his demons, and all our fellow men and women who at times choose to sin; temptations for us are all around and sometimes we may fall. Our sins have consequences on others; other people are affected by our sins. Of course, they are also affected by our choices for the good. But Job is convinced that the tragedies in his life could not be a result of his own sin. In his time it was the prevailing thought that if bad things happened, you must have done something to cause this punishment. His three friends insist there must be something he has done. But he is constant in his denial of this. He exhibits a great trust in God, knowing that this cannot be punishment for his sins because he had not sinned. This great trust in God s justice is key to his life. God s Mercy and Justice are at the heart of our relationship with Him. We are as St. Paul, compelled to live and preach this message: Woe to me if I do not preach this Gospel St. Paul says. It is a Gospel not just of restoring the sick to physical health, but of restoring our sick souls to spiritual health. We are brought by our Lord into spiritual health through the miracles of our Sacraments His touching us with Grace, His Divine Life. Of course, when we are touched by God s miraculous care, as Job, Paul and Peter s Mother-in-Law, we respond with gratitude. We have begun our Diocesan Support Appeal with the theme: Sharing God s Gifts. Peter s Mother-in- Law is such a perfect example for us. Our Lord healed her and immediately she shares with her guests by tending to their needs. Please be generous in your kind giving to our Diocesan Family s collection for the many programs which are extensions of our Lord reaching out to touch those in need of the spiritual health only He can give. We have been served well by the Church and we in turn serve those around us. Let your generous gift for the DSA be one of the many ways you respond to the Lord in service to the many needs of His Church. May our Lord bless you and our Lady keep you in her care. With my prayers, Father Arnsparger THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED! PAGE 2

Your contribution to the Diocesan Support Appeal is a way of serving our brothers and sisters throughout the diocese and continuing the saving work begun by Jesus. We have a few offertory envelope boxes that have not been picked up. Please come to the office during office hours to pick up your envelopes. THE RITE OF PEACE The sign of peace is intended to demonstrate religious communion and mutual charity towards one another. Although we are the ones making the Sign of Peace, it is, in fact Jesus who has taken the initiative. We have prayed The Lord s Prayer together. Then we hear Jesus words, Peace I leave you, my peace I give you and a prayer that, because of the faith of the Church, we may find the peace and unity in accordance with His will. Each one of us is then invited to exchange peace in a mild manner with those closest, recognizing its deep meaning and significance. The sign of peace is properly exchanged by a bow of the head, a touching of the shoulders with a bow of the head to each side of another person or by shaking hands with those in immediate proximity to you with dignity and awareness of what is to follow the Agnus Dei and Holy Communion. We will continue to exchange the sign of peace with reverence but we ask that you consider refraining from shaking hands at that moment. The reason for this request is two-fold: we have several parishioners who may have compromised immune systems and shaking hands puts them at added risk for infection. In addition, the current outbreak of flu and measles poses health concerns for all of us and refraining from handshaking would be beneficial for all. We encourage you to exchange peace with a nod of your head and a respectful, Peace be with you. You may also fold your hands in prayer as you speak or simply fold your hands and nod your head. We thank you for your thoughtful consideration of this request. UT IN OMNIBUS GLORIFICETUR DEUS! PAGE 3

As of this printing, over 1,800 groups participated in Souper Bowl of Caring 2015, collected over $3,250,965 in cash and food items and donated 100% to charities in their area.
