Introduction As part of the Archbishops Thy Kingdom Come initiative, the Diocese of Southwark is encouraging churches to commit to daily prayer and a number of associated events around local mission and evangelism during the nine days from Ascension to Pentecost. This has been a key time to pray for the Church s mission since its earliest days, as we reflect on the divinity of our Saviour Jesus Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit as advocate and guide. This booklet has been compiled from a number of different sources to assist in leading daily prayer during this season, and draws on a variety of Church of England resources. To hear and download examples of the Taizé chants, visit the Taizé website (www.taize.fr). The intercessions roughly divide in this way: general prayers intercessions for people to experience God for the first time intercessions for local mission and evangelism initiatives. The bold R in the intercessions marks the response your parish uses habitually. This could be Lord have mercy, with the response Lord have mercy, followed by Christ have mercy (response: Christ have mercy ) and then Lord have mercy (response: Lord have mercy ). We hope that this resource will help local churches to engage in prayerful action focused on mission and evangelism during this important season. The Revd Ian Mobsby On behalf of the Diocese of Southwark s Thy Kingdom Come steering group 3

Morning prayer from Ascension to Pentecost The Welcome The leader welcomes those gathered and explains the particular prayer practice and readings The Preparation and Invocation Silent pause as candle is lit O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. In your resurrection, O Christ let heaven and earth rejoice. Alleluia. Blessèd are you, Lord of heaven and earth, to you be glory and praise forever. From the darkness of death you have raised your Christ to the right hand of your majesty on high. The pioneer of our faith, his passion accomplished, has opened for us the way to heaven and sends on us the promised Spirit. May we be ready to follow the Way and so be brought to the glory of his presence where songs of triumph forever sound. Blessèd be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessèd be God forever. Short pause The night has passed and the day lies open before us. Let us pray with one heart and mind. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and forever. Amen. 4

The Benedictus If you are able, please stand Blessèd be the Lord the God of Israel, who has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets God promised of old to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us. To show mercy to our ancestors, and to remember God s holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of all their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. The Prayers Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be forever. Amen. On this day that the Lord has made, let us pray for the people he has redeemed. That our friends, family and neighbours who do not know you may come to experience you as their Lord and Saviour: [R] That our parish initiatives in intercessory prayer, mission and evangelism may be effective in expanding your Kingdom: [R] That those born to new life in the waters of baptism may know the power of Christ s resurrection: [R] 6

That those who suffer pain and anguish may find healing and peace through Christ: [R] That in the undying love of Christ, we may have union with all who have died in the faith of Christ: [R] Free prayer may be offered and responses made Let us commend the world, in which Christ rose from the dead and ascended to heaven, to the mercy and protection of God this day: [R] The Collect for Ascensiontide Grant, we pray, almighty God, that as we believe your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to have ascended into the heavens, so we in heart and mind may also ascend and with him continually dwell; who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen Optional additional prayers The Lord s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. 7

The Blessing May Jesus Christ, the Life Giver, bless and guide us this day, and keep us in eternal life. Amen Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. Candle is extinguished 8

Evening prayer from Ascension to Pentecost The Welcome The leader welcomes those gathered and explains the particular prayer practice and readings The Preparation and Invocation Silent pause as candle is lit O God make speed to save us. O Lord make haste to help us. You, O Lord, are my lamp. You turn our darkness into light. A Song of the Light (from the 3rd-century Greek hymn, Phos Hilaron) Hail gladdening light, of thy pure glory poured. Who is the immortal Father, heavenly blessed. Holiest of holies, Jesus Christ our Lord. Now we have come to the sun s hour of rest the lights of evening round us shine. We hymn the Father, Son and Holy Spirit Divine. Worthiest art thou at all times to be sung with undefilèd tongues. 9

Short pause Son of our God, giver of life alone. Therefore in all the world thy Glory Lord they own. That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful let us pray with one heart and mind. As our evening prayer rises before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise, now and forever. Amen. The Magnificat If you are able, please stand My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour; for he has looked with favour on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessèd, the Almighty has done great things for me and Holy is his name. He has mercy on those who fear him, in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm and has scattered the proud in their conceit, casting down the mighty from their thrones and lifting up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, to remember his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our forebears, to Abraham and his children forever. The Prayers Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be forever. Amen. To Christ, the Lamb who was slain, and who now lives in the glory of the Father, let us raise the voice of praise. Lord Jesus, you are the Amen, the faithful witness, the first of God s creation: [R] You search into the thoughts and affections of all people: [R] You reprove and chasten those whom you love: [R] You open up the eyes of the blind and set the prisoners free: [R] That our friends, family and neighbours who do not know you may come to experience you as their Lord and Saviour: [R] 11

That our parish initiatives in intercessory prayer, mission and evangelism may be effective in expanding your Kingdom: [R] Free prayer may be offered and responses made In your paschal victory, you have proclaimed the coming of the kingdom: [R] The Collect for Ascensiontide Grant, we pray, almighty God, that as we believe your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to have ascended into the heavens, so we in heart and mind may also ascend and with him continually dwell; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Notes: Prayer practice: Lectio Divina In this shortened version of the Lectio Divina prayer practice, the aim is to encourage the participant to experience the text, and allow the Holy Spirit to enlighten key words or phrases. The text should be read three times, with a substantial pause between each reading to explore these questions: where are you drawn in this text? What words or phrases hit you, what image do you get from listening to this text? wherever you were drawn in the text, allow yourself to go deeper with whatever words, phrases or images you have experienced what might God be saying to you through this text, and how might you seek to respond? Prayer practice ends when the leader says Amen. Material is taken from liturgy resources compiled by The Revd Ian Mobsby drawing on the daily prayer pattern of the Wellspring Community Peckham, with material produced by permission from Common Worship and Daily Prayer, Archbishops Council 2017 and Church House Publishing, and Celebrating Common Prayer (Mowbray), The Society of Saint Francis 1992, and the Thy Kingdom Come official website.
