REVELATION. of JESUS CHRIST. chapter 3:1-6

Transcription:

Psalm 96 The Psalm connects the readings about the gifts of the Princes and the dedication of the Altar and the consecration of the Tabernacle with the entry of the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem in David's reign. See verse 8 - "bring an offering, and come into his courts" This and part of Psalm 105 were first composed and sung at the bringing of the ark from the house of Obededom to the city of David (see 1 Chronicles 16:7) (although the Temple had not yet been built); and here it is detached from that and reworked with a new introduction, and applied to the times and kingdom of the Messiah, since the ark was an eminent type of Christ. The Syriac version (the Peshitta, translated in the 5th century in Edessa, used by the Eastern churches) titles this psalm: a Psalm of David, a Prophecy of the coming of the Messiah, and of the calling of the Gentiles that believe in him" Psalm 96:1-3 - "O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth. Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people." Rashi - Wherever a "new song" is mentioned, it is to be understood of future time, or the times of the Messiah; and the end of the psalm shows it, "he cometh to judge" etc. The Targum adds, "O sing, ye angels on high, sing before the Lord, all ye righteous of the earth." Throughout the Psalms and Prophets: Psalm 33:3, Psalm 98:1, Psalm 149:1, Isaiah 42:10 - Revelation 5:9 -- "And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation" - Revelation 14:3 - "And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth." - Revelation 15:3 - "and they sang the song of God's servant Moses and of the Lamb: "Great and wonderful are Your works, O Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the nations!" One of the many times there is a hint of the universality of the Gospel within the Old Testament. All the earth is summoned to join in Israel s thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1 - "Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. " Page 1 of 7

Psalm 96:4-5 - "For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods ('elohiym) of the nations are idols ('eliyl): but the LORD made the heavens." "idols" = 'eliyl - from a word that means never, nothing, not, worthless, empty, unreal, useless See especially Psalm 115:4-8 from the Hallel. - Deuteronomy 4:39 - "Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else." - 1 Corinthians 8:4 - "As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one." On the other hand: - 1 Corinthians 10:20 - "But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils (δαιμόνια), and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils." - Revelation 9:20 - "And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils (δαιμόνια), and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:" Psalm 96:6 - "Honor and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary." "sanctuary" - the Holy of Holies of the Tabernacle (The Temple sanctuary was not yet built), which was a picture of His dwelling place in glory in Heaven, and His dwelling place within his church, which is His body. In the similar phrase in 1 Chronicles 16:27, it is, "strength and gladness are in his place; among his people and worshippers there." Psalm 96:7 - "Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength." "kindreds of the people" are the Gentiles Psalm 96:8 - "Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts." Here is the link with the Torah reading in Numbers 7 describing the offerings and gifts of Page 2 of 7

the princes of Israel. The Adornment of Holiness Psalm 96:9 - "O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth." "beauty" = hadarah - "adornment" of holiness Holy attire - the garment of Christ's righteousness, similar to the right wedding garment in the New Testament parable. - Revelation 3:5 - "He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life" - Revelation 7:9 - After this I looked and saw a multitude too large to count, from every nation and tribe and people and tongue, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands." - Revelation 19:8 - "It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints." - Isaiah 61:10 - "I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, My soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels." - Psalm 132:9 - "Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness, And let Your godly ones sing for joy." The "adornment of holiness" if we depend on our own righteousness for salvation: - Isaiah 64:6 - "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away." - Revelation 3:4 - "'But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy." "Soiling" our garments - several types depict this: A garment can become leprous - Jude 1:22-23 - "And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh." Leprosy is a picture of a soul turned inward, and thus depending on the raw flesh" or the natural human state. Page 3 of 7

One could also have a garment "spotted" and made unclean by an emission of sperm, since both semen and menstrual blood that did not combine to create new life and was found outside the body made one unclean. Priests could not perform valid ministry in a garment that was spotted by anything at all (Babylonian Talmud, Pesachim, fol. 65. 2. & Zebachim, fol. 18. 2. & Piske Tosephot in Yoma, art. 9. & Maimon. Cele Hamikdash, c. 8. sect. 4.). The garment was a reflection of your inner being. In one saying - obviously extreme to make a point - if a disciple of a wise man had even a spot of grease on his garments on a sabbath day, he was guilty of death (Babylonian Talmud, Sabbat, fol. 114. 1). The picture in Jude is of someone so given over to lusts, gluttony, etc. that he gives no mind to the polluted garments that revealed his sin. There is also a recollection of the state of Adam and Eve in the Garden after the Fall, when God said, "Who told you that you were naked?" and He made garments for them from "skins," implying a sacrifice. Priestly Garments The priests' special undergarments were required to prevent their death when approaching the Holy Place in the Tabernacle, so their nakedness would not be exposed: - Exodus 28:43 - Concerning the linen undergarments: "And they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they come in unto the tabernacle of the congregation, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity, and die: it shall be a statute for ever unto him and his seed after him." Approaching God requires a special garment: "Five times did the High Priest change his clothing on Yom HaKippurim. Each clothing change required immersion in a Mikva. Similarly, he had to sanctify his hands and feet twice each time (i.e., adding up to ten sanctifications in all), the first time in honor of the clothing that he was going to remove, and a second time in honor of the clothing that he was about to put on " - Mishnayot Mevuarot Pinchos Kehati A midrash poses the question, From where do we know that one should change his clothes for Shabbat and for prayer and any other matter that involves Divine Service? Because it is said, And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and the School of R. Yishmael taught: The Torah teaches you Derech Eretz : In the garments in which one cooked a dish for his master, one should not pour a cup [of wine] for his master. Separation of holy from unholy "And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth the ashes without the camp to a clean place." (Leviticus 6:11) A change of garments was Page 4 of 7

called for because this part of the ministry took him outside the sacred precincts of the Tabernacle, and no doubt his garments would be spotted.' Blood from the sacrifice cleanses rather than defiles Interestingly, something you would think would defile the garments - the blood of the sacrifice - was actually used to consecrate Aaron and his sons: - Leviticus 8:30 - "And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons' garments with him; and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him." (Also Exodus 29:21) Even in the future Temple vision of Ezekiel, priestly garments of linen are required: - Ezekiel 44:17 - "When they enter the gates of the inner court, they are to wear linen garments; they must not wear anything made of wool when they minister at the gates of the inner court or inside the temple." Woolen garments would make the priest sweat, who was supposed to be ministering in the Rest of God, not his own self-exertion. Psalm 96:10 - "Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously." He reigns over his people in a righteous manner, with a sceptre of righteousness, according to the rules of righteousness, by righteous laws and ordinances; he justifies his people with his own righteousness; he forms the new man in them, which is created in righteousness, and sets up a kingdom within them, which consists of righteousness. - Gill's Exposition - Isaiah 52:7 - "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!" Psalm 96:11-13 - "Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof. Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth." Targum: Let the righteous of the earth be glad There is a similar picture in Psalm 98:8-9 - "Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy before the LORD, for He comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity." Page 5 of 7

The roaring of the sea here is transformed from the outcry of tumultuous humanity to the joyful praise of God, along with all of nature. - Isaiah 57:20 - "But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest (shâqaṭ), whose waters cast up mire and dirt." - Romans 8:22 - "For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now." - Isaiah 44:23 - "I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee. Sing, O ye heavens; for the LORD hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel." Because Christ has atoned for our sin through His sacrifice, All creation rejoices. Aben Ezra interprets all this of the heavens giving dew, the earth its increase, and the field its fruit; all which is rejoicing. - Acts 17:30-31 - "Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times, He now commands all men everywhere to repent. For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising Him from the dead. - John 3:17 - "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him." - John 5:22,23 - "For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:" That day of Judgment will come for all humanity. - John 3:18 - "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." - Hebrews 9:26-28 - "...now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation." or, "not to bear sin but to bring salvation" - Romans 14:10-12 - "For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written, As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall Page 6 of 7

confess to God. So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. - Revelation 20:12 - "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works." Just as every Israelite was numbered (Numbers 1) by appearing individually and giving his name, so we will be judged individually and not as a great mass of people. We will have the opportunity to "give an account." But our good deeds will be inadequate. Only the blood of Christ, the garment of salvation, can overturn the sentence of death. Page 7 of 7
