Following in the Footsteps of Jesus A 10 day Pilgrimage to Israel and Palestine Led by Bishop Michael Beasley & The Revd Kate Peacock 20-29 November, 2017 The Sea of Galilee from the Mount of Beatitudes - The official and preferred Pilgrimage partner for the Diocese of Jerusalem - Coopersale Hall Farm, Epping, CM16 7PE Tel: 01992 576 065 Email: info@lightline.org.uk Web:www.lightline.org.uk

The Holy Land Dear Pilgrims, We are delighted and excited to be offering this pilgrimage for people from Buntingford Deanery to the Holy Land. We hope and pray you will join us on this amazing journey of discovery. The pilgrimage has been planned to help people from across our churches grow in faith and unity, enabling us better together to Live God s Love. Our hope is that when we return home, we will tell our stories and inspire others with the Gospel story of life in all its abundance. To visit the sacred sites and churches of the Holy Land, to walk the ancient streets and to encounter the Sea of Galilee is like being taken from seeing the scriptures on the equivalent of an old black and white TV with fuzzy, intermittent reception, to suddenly reading the Bible in High Definition with surround sound and in glorious technicolor. To tread the roads that Jesus trod, to walk in the hills where he played as a child, to sail on the sea he calmed, to drink from the well of Jacob and to walk in his footsteps to Jerusalem and beyond is a truly remarkable experience after which life is never the same again. As well as worshipping and engaging with our faith in this fascinating and holy place, we shall travel also to see what life is like today; to see how this place matters to Christian, Jew and Muslim and to face the reality of division and occupation. We will visit where Jesus wept over Jerusalem and we may well join our tears with his. We will visit places where Christians are living out their faith in remarkable ways and we will see the rich variety of Christian worship from around the world. So, please do join us on this journey to the place where God became human, the empty tomb was discovered and where the world was changed forever. Do join us, and as pilgrims have done down the centuries, we will laugh, eat, walk, pray and grow together as we travel. + Michael Kate

Day 1, Monday 20 November We gather at London Luton Airport for our morning flight to Tel Aviv. Meal served inflight. We will be met on arrival and transferred to our pilgrim guest house on the shores of the Sea of Galilee for the first of three nights stay here. Dinner and overnight stay by the Sea of Galilee. Day 3, Wednesday 22 November Today will be devoted to a leisurely exploration of the area that was the base for Jesus ministry by the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. We will visit sites associated with the call of the first disciples, the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, the teaching of the Sermon on the Mount and the village of Capernaum. We will also sail Day 2, Tuesday 21 November We begin our pilgrimage by driving across the green and fertile plains of Jezreel (the biblical scene of Armageddon) to visit the basilica on the summit of Mount Tabor, claimed to be the site of the Transfiguration of Jesus before Peter, James and John. On descending Mount Tabor we visit Nazareth, the town associated with the beginning of the gospel message, to see how the Good News is both remembered and lived out today. We will visit the site of the only spring in town, where Jesus mother will have drawn water, the Basilica of the Annunciation and the Synagogue Church. After a break for lunch we will visit Cana, the site of Jesus first sign, before we return to our guest house. Dinner and overnight by the Sea of Galilee. on a modern-day version of the kind of boat used for fishing at the time of Jesus and we will end our day with a visit to the exciting excavations at Magdala, the home town of Jesus close friend and follower, Mary Magdalene (Mary of Magdala). It was a major first-century port and specialised in salted and smoked fish and exported its products all over the Mediterranean and southern Europe. The excavations to date have uneartherd sections of the port walls, a market, several homes shops and most importantly a first century synagogue that was probably destroyed by the Romans around 67CE. There is a high probability that

Day 3 continued Jesus preached in this synagogue. As it was the only town on the Western shores of the lake and situated on the Stella Maris, the ancient trade route that ran from Egypt along the Mediterranean, up along the western shores of the lake and then up in to Syria and beyond. Return to our hotel in good time for dinner and overnight stay. believed to be close to where Jesus was baptized by John, where we will have an opportunity to renew our baptism vows. We will stop briefly for a view of the Mount of Temptation before driving up through the hills of the Judean wilderness towards Bethlehem for the first of two nights stay in the city in which Christ was born. Dinner and overnight stay by Manger Square in Bethlehem. Day 4, Thursday 23 November We leave Galilee after breakfast and head south through the heart of the West Bank, noting as we drive some of the facts on the ground about the Occupation as we come to the city of Nablus. Here we will visit Jacob s Well, where the Fourth Gospel tells us of Jesus encounter with the woman drawing water. We also hope to visit the Anglican parish in the city and see its heartwarming work with young children in its kindergarten. After lunch we journey down to the banks of the River Jordan to the site Day 5, Friday 24 November Today will be devoted to discovering more about Incarnation and the gift of life in all its abundance. We will visit the Shepherds Fields and the Church of the Nativity. Also some remarkable Christian institutions endeavouring to bring something of the abundant life promised in the gospel to those living under the restrictions of the Occupation. We will include a visit the St Vincent Creche/Orphanage - the only facility of its kind in the West Bank offering Christian love and compassion to over forty abandoned babies and small children. Dinner and overnight stay by Manger Square.

will visit the village of Ein Karem, believed to have been the home of Zechariah and Elizabeth and the place of the birth of John the Baptist, also he encounter between Elizabeth and Mary, when Magnificat was first sung. Return to Jerusalem and our hotel in good time for dinner and overnight stay. Day 8, Monday 27 November Day 6, Saturday 25 November We leave Bethlehem after an early breakfast and drive to the Israel Museum to visit the Shrine of the Book and the model of Jerusalem based around the time of Jesus. We then proceed to Bethany where Jesus enjoyed hospitality with his close friends Mary, Martha and Lazarus and where he raised Lazarus from the dead. We will have lunch here before driving to the summit of the Mount of Olives, to trace Jesus Palm Sunday journey from Bethphage down the mountain. We will stop at two churches on the way before reaching the Garden of Gethsemane and the profoundly moving Church of the Agony. Finally we continue to our hotel within the old walled city of Jerusalem. Dinner and overnight stay in Jerusalem. Day 7, Sunday 26 November On this, the first day of the week, we will attend the Eucharist at the mother church of Anglicanism in the Holy Land, St George s Cathedral in East Jerusalem. After lunch we This morning we will combine the depth of religious history of the Holy Land with a clear indication of the modern day political problems by visiting Hebron to see the Tomb of the Patriarchs and see how the Old City centre has been divided and impoverished by the results of the occupation. We will have the chance to enter both the mosque and the synagogue, as well as walking in the souk. After lunch we return to Jerusalem to pay a brief visit to the Western Wall before ascending Mount Zion to visit sites associated with the Last Supper, the Day of

Day 8 continued Pentecost and the falling asleep of Mary, before finishing our day at the church of St Peter in Gallicantu and recalling Peter s betrayal of Jesus. Return to our hotel. Dinner and overnight stay in Jerusalem. to view the excavated monastery of the Essene community which produced the famous scrolls. There will then be an opportunity to bathe in the unique mineralladen waters of the Dead Sea before returning to Jerusalem for a farewell dinner and our final nights stay. Day 9, Tuesday 28 November This morning we walk the Way of the Cross along the Via Dolorosa through the narrow streets of the Old City of Jerusalem culminating in the extraordinary Church of the Holy Sepulchure, believed to be built over the site of Jesus crucifixion, burial and resurrection. The afternoon will be free to allow time to revisit favourite sites of the Old City or join an optional visit to the Dead Sea basin. We travel down to Qumran to view the site where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered by a Bedouin shepherd and Day 10, Wednesday 29 November After breakfast and packing our bags, we will head west towards the Mediterranean and Tel Aviv airport, stopping at the town of Abu Ghosh, one of the possible sites of Emmaus, to celebrate a final Eucharist together before heading on to the airport for our journey home to tell all those whom we meet about what has happened to us on the road Please note this touring programme may be subject to minor local amendments
