The HOUR Has Come John 14 This chapter opens just after Judas has been identified as the betrayer. Judas has left the Upper Room, leaving the other 11 disciples with Jesus for the continuation of the Upper Room Discourse. The time is the night before the Crucifixion. Jesus knows His hour has come. He will soon be leaving and He is again attempting to prepare His closest followers. 1

Jesus is instructing the disciples The Upper Room Discourse Judas was identified as the betrayer in John 13. In John 14, Judas is absent. Disciples are unclear on Jesus message The disciples and Jesus were having an after dinner conversation. This private meeting was just for the disciples Happening just before Passover Peter has declared his love for Jesus 5
1. Don t Be Troubled Jesus s command to the disciples to NOT be troubled tells us two things explicitly. First, Jesus knew exactly what His followers were feeling they were troubled. Second, Jesus s command tells us that we can control our emotions. 6
2. My Father s Place Has Many Rooms. Jesus is giving confirmation that the place where He is going (returning to His Father) is a place that will have room for all of them. 7
3. I m Coming Back For You. Jesus affirms that although He is leaving, He ll be back. He s coming back so they can go to His Father s house with Him. 8
4.You Know the Way. The disciples don t realize how much they really know. Their time with Jesus has taught them more than they recognize. Jesus will have to make it clear to them (AGAIN) that to know Him is to know the Father. 9
Jesus is the Way John 14:5-14 Jesus, again affirms that He alone is the way the disciples must follow. There will be many paths and numerous messengers after His departure; they must continue to follow Jesus. 10
The TRUTH The WAY The LIFE Thomas said, Lord, we don t know where you are going, so how can we know the way? I m reminded of Abram who was told to go to a land that God would show him. He didn t know the way, but followed the instructions he was given. Jesus, indeed, is our way. We must follow Him. 11
I Am the Way Straight is the gate and narrow is the way. Many distractions and alternate paths will gain our attention. Some of them will seem more fun, easier, to have more people, perhaps provide more money, but only ONE way leads to the Father. 12
Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us. Don t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Jesus again affirms that He and the Father are one. 13
Asking in Jesus Name Will always glorify God Is always in agreement with God s will for us Will never contradict His Word Is done in the authority of God Psalm 37:4 The truth of that scripture is that when we make the Lord our delight, our focus changes to pleasing Him. In doing so, His will becomes out will. Therefore, the things we want (desires of our heart) will be the things that God wants. In other words, His will becomes our desire. 14
Scripture References from Last Week Psalm 37:4 Benefit of Delighting in the Lord James 3:13-18 God s Wisdom vs. Earthly Wisdom James 1:5-7 - Ask for Wisdom Romans 8:26-27 -Holy Spirit Intercedes Rely on the Word of God to teach you about communicating with God. 15
An Advocate is Coming John 14:15-26 The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He is not an IT. He is co-equal with God the Father and God the Son, Jesus. He advocates for us before the Father as an attorney does in a courtroom. Our accuser is Satan (Rev.12:10; 16
KT1 Advocate Comforter Spirit of Truth Teacher Judas, not Iscariot - Read Luke 6:13, 16 (Judas, the brother of James) The Holy Spirit, according to scripture has specific roles in the life of a believer. In this chapter, Jesus says that He will send another Comforter (Jesus was a comforter while with them in the flesh). He will be not only a comforter, but also an advocate, teacher and the spirit of truth n a believer s life. The Spirit indwells every believer. Serves the role of advocate before the Father, comforter in every circumstance (Jesus said He wouldn t leave us comfortless) This contrasts the work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament when He came upon people for a particular service Saul (!Sam 10:6), Elders of Israel (Numbers11:17, 25) David (I Samuel 16:13); Saul (I Samuel 16:14) 17

KT1 Advocate Speaks in our defense. Satan, the accuser, constantly points out our sin, our failures. The Holy Spirit comes to our rescue as a lawyer does for his client in a courtroom Judas, not Iscariot - Read Luke 6:13, 16 (Judas, the brother of James) The Spirit indwells every believer. Serves the role of advocate before the Father, comforter in every circumstance (Jesus said He wouldn t leave us comfortless) 18

KT1 Comforter/Helper Someone to assist in difficult times of agony, stress, grief, and pain of all sorts Jesus said He would send anotherhelper. The disciples knew clearly that Jesus had been a helper. So, the Holy Spirit would be a helper as Jesus had been. The Spirit indwells every believer. Serves the role of advocate before the Father, comforter in every circumstance (Jesus said He wouldn t leave us comfortless) 19

KT1 Teacher Someone who gives insights and helps us learn & understand new concepts. Reminds of previously conveyed truths. John 12:16; John 16:12 The Holy Spirit opens the truth of the scripture to our understanding. We should always approach the Word by asking God to teach us and to help us to understand, recall and apply to our lives. 20

Jesus Must Leave John 14:27-31 Jesus is now completing His mission. He has ministered among the people, but now must go back to God the Father. 21
