Thank you. + DIVINE SERVICE + HYMN For All the Saints LW 191 vs. 1-3 For all the saints who from their labors rest, All who by faith before the world confessed, Your name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia! You were their rock, their fortress, and their might; You, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; You, in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia! Alleluia! Oh, may your soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old And win with them the victor s crown of gold. Alleluia! Alleluia! INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Pastor: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. People: Who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) 1

Pastor: None of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. People: If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. (Romans 14:7-8) HYMN For All the Saints LW 191 vs. 4-6 Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine, We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one within your great design. Alleluia! Alleluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave again and arms are strong. Alleluia! Alleluia! The golden evening brightens in the west; Soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. Alleluia! Alleluia! COMMEMORATION OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED Pastor: On this Day of All Saints, we remember with thanksgiving our brothers and sisters in Christ who have gone before us with the sign of faith. They were created by God to offer him praise, redeemed by Jesus, and filled with the Holy Spirit through Baptism where God gave them new life. They were nourished in the company of his people through the Lord's Supper and the Word, and in his mercy God summoned them to his presence that they may continue in joyful service to him forever. People: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on, for they will rest from their labors, and their deeds will follow them. (Revelation 14:13) Barbara J. Hautt-Erickson Born: 7/30/1941 Died: 1/12/2018 Frances Ione Janssen Born: 9/11/1924 Died: 1/16/2018 Larry Lee Gilbert Born: 3/8/1939 Died: 1/20/2018 Pearl Josepha Henke Born: 6/8/1923 Died: 1/25/2018 Robert Carl Schrandt Born: 12/5/1921 Died: 3/6/2018 Dale Alvin Meldahl Born: 4/3/1957 Died: 7/28/2018 Maurice Lyle Sinn Born: 7/31/1925 Died: 8/12/2018 Otto Warren Kitzmann Born: 9/4/1925 Died: 8/21/2018 Pastor: O Lord, in joyful expectation of the resurrection of the body to life, we remember before you all those who have gone before us in faith. (Moment of silence) Pastor: We offer thanksgiving for the gift of faith and we hold fast to the certainty of your promises. May their memory among us be blessed, and may we follow their footsteps of faith to your eternal presence in the heavenly kingdom. SCRIPTURE READING Revelation 7:9-17 Pastor: After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne 2

and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: People: "Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb." Pastor: All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: People: "Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!" Pastor: Then one of the elders asked me, People: "These in white robes--who are they, and where did they come from?" Pastor: I answered, "Sir, you know." And he said, People: "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore, they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them. Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." HYMN For All the Saints LW 191 vs. 7-8 But then there breaks a yet more glorious day: The saints triumphant rise in bright array; The King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia! Alleluia! From earth s wide bounds, from ocean s farthest coast, Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost: Alleluia! Alleluia! COLLECT OF THE DAY Pastor: O almighty God, by whom we are graciously knit together as one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of Jesus Christ, our Lord, grant us so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those unspeakable joys which you have prepared for those who love you; through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. HYMN For All Your Saints, O Lord LW 195 SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM (Sunday 10:30) Pastor: All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. People: We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Pastor: If we have been united with him in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. (Romans 6:3b-5) 3

The Word of God teaches that we are all conceived and born sinful and are under the power of the devil until Christ claims us as his own. We would be lost forever unless delivered from sin, death and everlasting condemnation. But the Father of all mercy and grace has sent his Son Jesus Christ, who atoned for the sin of the whole world that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. THE SIGN OF THE CROSS Pastor: Jack Wayne Spangler, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your forehead and upon your heart to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified. THE TASKS OF SPONSORS Pastor: From ancient times the Church has observed the custom of appointing sponsors for baptismal candidates. It is the task of sponsors to confess the Christian faith expressed in the Apostles Creed. They are to pray for them, support them in their ongoing instruction and nurture in the Christian faith, and encourage them toward the faithful reception of the Lord s Supper. Sponsors are at all times to be examples of the holy life of faith in Christ and love for one s neighbor. Sarah and Jesse, is it your intention to serve Jack as sponsors in the Christian faith? Response: Yes, with the help of God. Pastor: God enable you to will and to do this faithful and loving work and with his grace fulfill what we are unable to do. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER Pastor: In order to implore the blessing of our Lord Jesus Christ upon the gathering of Jack into the family of our Father, let us all join together in the Lord s Prayer: People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Pastor: Jack, the Lord preserve your coming in and your going out from this time forth and even forevermore. Amen. THE CONFESSION OF FAITH Pastor: Because Jack cannot answer for himself, we shall all, together with his parents and sponsors, faithfully speak on his behalf in testimony of the forgiveness of sin and the birth of the life of faith which God our Father gives in and through Baptism. Pastor: Do you renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways? People: I do renounce them. Pastor: Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty? People: Yes, I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. 4

Pastor: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son? People: Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. Pastor: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? People: Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE BAPTISM Pastor: Jack Wayne Spangler, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit, and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with his grace to life everlasting. Amen. THE BAPTISMAL CANDLE THE PRAYER Pastor: Almighty and most merciful God and Father, we thank and praise you that you graciously preserve and enlarge your family and have granted Jack the new birth in Holy Baptism and made him a member of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and heir of your heavenly kingdom. We humbly implore you that, as he has now become your child, you would keep him in his baptismal grace that, according to your good pleasure, he may faithfully grow to lead a godly life to the praise and honor of your holy name and finally with all your saints obtain the promised inheritance in heaven. Look also with kindness upon Jamie and Abby, and upon all parents. Let them ever rejoice in the gift you have given them. Enable them to be good teachers and examples of righteousness to Jack. Strengthen them in their own baptism so that they may share eternally with Jack the salvation you have given them; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. THE WELCOME Pastor: Jack, we receive you in Jesus name as a brother in Christ, that together we may hear his Word, receive his gifts, and proclaim the praises of him who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. People: We welcome you into the Lord s family. Pastor: And you, Jack, the Lord bless you in all your ways from this time forth and even forevermore. 5

OLD TESTAMENT READING Malachi 3:13-18 "You have said harsh things against me," says the LORD. "Yet you ask, 'What have we said against you?' You have said, 'It is futile to serve God. What did we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD Almighty? But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly the evildoers prosper, and even those who challenge God escape.' " Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name. "They will be mine," says the LORD Almighty, "in the day when I make up my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him. And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not. EPISTLE READING Titus 2:11-14, 3:1-2 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men. HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 20:20-28 Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him. "What is it you want?" he asked. She said, "Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom." "You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said to them. "Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?" "We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father." When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
