THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY The First Presbyterian Church of Howard County The Second Sunday of Advent December 9, 2018 8:30 a.m. GATHER Let all enter the sanctuary in a spirit of prayer. Please remember to turn cell phones and pagers to silent for worship. Where you see an asterisk (*) please stand if you are able. Words in bold are read by the congregation. Please fill out the red Friendship Pad in each pew. For Meditation before Worship (for personal use before worship) Waiting for the savior is humbling. It forces us to admit that the world does not operate on our schedule. Lillian Daniel Greeting The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. [We take a moment to prepare to worship, and then continue:] Jesus says: I am coming soon. Amen! Come Lord Jesus! Please fill out the red Friendship Pad in each pew. Newcomers please leave us your address and contact information! Then, pass the folder the length of the pew and back. Prelude Prayer for Sunday Morning May God be with you. And also with you. O God of Elizabeth and Mary, you visited your servants with news of the world s redemption in the coming of the Savior. Make our hearts leap with joy, and fill our mouths with songs of praise, that we may announce glad tidings of peace, and welcome the Christ into our midst. Amen. * Hymn 105 People, Look East Besancon

Call to Confession Prayer of Confession Holy God, Maker of all: Have mercy on us. Jesus Christ, servant of the poor: Have mercy on us. Holy Spirit, Breath of life: Have mercy on us. To you, O God, we lift our souls. You know us through and through. We confess our sin to you. You look with favor on the poor, while we treat the lowly with disdain. You scatter the plans of the proud while we aspire to power and privilege. Forgive us, God of grace. Teach us what you desire, so that our hearts may leap with joy at the coming of our Savior; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (We take time for quiet, personal prayer ) Assurance of Grace * Sharing the Peace The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. We greet each other with signs of peace and reconciliation. A touch on the shoulder, a nod, a bow can be a substitute for handshakes to hinder the spread of the flu. * Response of Praise 583 (singing together) Taizé Glory to God, glory to God, glory in the highest! Glory to God, glory to God, alleluia, alleluia! Words of Welcome Gloria, gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, gloria, alleluia, alleluia!

Lighting the Advent Candles HEAR This is the season of hope. In a world bent on violence and destruction, the call to hope is a call to resistance. Don t be afraid draw near! We light the candles on the Advent Wreath because we refuse to let go of hope. The first candle is the candle for courage. We need courage to pray and work for God s reign on earth, even in troublesome times. The second candle is the candle for joy. We need voices that are clear enough and strong enough to sing God s joyful song, even in mournful times. We remember that without joy people struggle to find their way. Let s pray together: Holy God, fill us with the creative power of hope. Lend us your light, so we may draw near to you. Amen. Song (singing together) Don t Be Afraid (WGRG) Don t be afraid. My love is stronger, My love is stronger than your fear. Don t be afraid. My love is stronger, And I have promised, promised to be always near. RESPOND AND SERVE * Affirmation of Faith (together) The Apostles Creed (Traditional) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. * Hymn 99 My Soul Gives Glory to My God Morning Song Song of Mary Concerns and Remembrances Prayers of Gratitude and Concern God in your grace, Hear our prayer.
