SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS Elkins High Summer 2014 Mrs. Deslaurier Mr. Pye AP World History Required Map: A working knowledge of world geography is crucial to success in AP World History. Students are expected to be able to locate the major regions and nations of the world. Using the attached AP World Regions map and chart, identify the MAJOR countries within each region. Complete the chart, which will be due on the first day of school. Be ready for a quiz on the regions and countries during the first week of school. Required Book: History of the World in Six Glasses by Tom Standage OR This Fleeting World by David Christian Assignment Directions: Keep a dialectical journal. It must have a total of 10 entries. EXTRA CREDIT will be given to any student who completes 15 journal entries. o o Entries are passages from the book that you think are important to the development of world history. Entries must be taken from passages spread relatively evenly throughout the book. This means all or most entries should not be taken from the beginning of the book. I will have to assume that big chunks of text not represented in the journal were not read. Journal entries must include: o A quotation from the book- This may be one line, a few lines, or up to a paragraph in length. Copy the passage EXACTLY as it appears in the book and put quotation marks around it. Number each passage and include the page number from which it was taken. o A response to the passage that includes: A summary of the passage- Be sure to explain what is going on in the book at this point. Explain what people/cultures are involved, using their NAMES. This is what shows me you have really read the book. (1-2 sentences) Commentary on the significance of the passage explanation of why this passage is important to the history of the world. (1-2 sentences) WARNING: Responses that are so vague that any person could have made it up simply by reading the quote will NOT be accepted. Sample journal entry: Journal #12. Page 355 - the death of the Great Khan Ogodei required Mongol leaders to return to Mongolia, and Western Europe was thus spared the trauma of conquest. Response This passage refers to the expansion of the Mongol Empire from the Pacific Ocean to Europe. The Mongols were able to conquer the Kievan Rus, but were unable to advance farther into Europe. The retreat of the Mongols occurred in the late 1200s, just as Western Europe was beginning to rejoin a global trading system and developing trends that led to the Renaissance. Had the Mongols conquered all of Europe, France, England, and the Italian city-states would most likely have suffered the same cultural stagnation that the Russians did. Assignment Format: All journals must be typed and submitted online through turnitin.com. If you do not already have a turnitin account, visit turnitin.com and set one up. Our class name is Elkins AP World History (class ID #8085217) and the password is Hammurabi. Your name (official, not nickaname) and course name (AP World History) should be typed at the top of the first page of the assignment. DO NOT USE columns or boxes when typing the assignment as these are not recognized by turnitin and will cause the material to be mixed up.

DUE DATE: Summer book assignments are to be completed and submitted to turnitin by 8:00 a.m. Friday, September 5. Assignments submitted after this time will be penalized. Please feel free to contact me at dema.deslaurier@fortbend.k12.tx.us any time during the summer if you have any questions. CHEATING POLICY: All work turned in must be the student s own thoughts about the book. PLEASE do not try to copy anything from the internet or from study-aid type books. Any student caught copying work from any source, including other students, will receive a grade of zero on the assignment, which CANNOT be made up.
