LAFAYETTE-ORINDA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SUNDAY WORSHIP BULLETIN SUPPLEMENT Call to Worship One: One: One: One: Many: God, you have welcomed us, saying, I know you by name, and you have found favor with me. God, you have promised us, My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. God, you have blessed us, saying, I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you. God, you have humbled us, saying, I will proclaim my holy name in your presence. God, show us your glory! We worship you! Introit: Jubilate Deo Music by Michael Praetorius Jubilate Deo (Rejoice in the Lord) Jubilate Deo Alleluia! Songs of Praise: Holy God, We Praise Your Name (Hymnal #4) Text: Attr. Ibnaz Franz, c. 1774; trans. Clarence Alphonsus Walworth, 1858, alt Music: Allgemeines Katholisches Cesangbuch, c. 174; harm. Johann Gottfried Schicht, 1819 Holy God we praise your name; Lord of all, we bow before you All on earth your scepter claim; all in heaven above adore you Infinite your vast domain, everlasting is your reign Hark! The glad celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising Cherubim and seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising Fill the heavens with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy Lord! All apostles join the strain as your sacred name they hallow Prophets swell the glad refrain, and the blessed martyrs follow And from morn to set of sun, through the church the song goes on Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit: three we name you While in essence only one; undivided God we claim you And adoring, bend the knee while we own the mystery Open the Eyes of My Heart (Hymnal #452) Text & Music: Paul Baloche, 1997; tune: Open the Eyes Open the eyes of my heart, Lord Open the eyes of my heart I want to see you; I want to see you To see you high and lifted up, Shining in the light of your glory x2
Pour out your power and love as we sing Holy, holy, holy Reading: Psalm 145:1 13 (The Message) I lift you high in praise, my God, O my King! and I ll bless your name into eternity. I ll bless you every day, and keep it up from now to eternity. God is magnificent; he can never be praised enough. There are no boundaries to his greatness. Generation after generation stands in awe of your work; each one tells stories of your mighty acts. Your beauty and splendor have everyone talking; I compose songs on your wonders. Your marvelous doings are headline news; I could write a book full of the details of your greatness. The fame of your goodness spreads across the country; your righteousness is on everyone s lips. God is all mercy and grace not quick to anger, is rich in love. God is good to one and all; everything he does is suffused with grace. Creation and creatures applaud you, God; your holy people bless you. They talk about the glories of your rule, they exclaim over your splendor, Letting the world know of your power for good, the lavish splendor of your kingdom. Your kingdom is a kingdom eternal; you never get voted out of office. God always does what he says, and is gracious in everything he does. Anthem: I Sing the Greatness of Our God Words Isaac Watts, alt. Fred Bock; Music: Fred Bock I sing the greatness of our God that made the mountains rise That spread the flowing seas abroad and built the lofty skies I sing of the Wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day The moon shines full at God s command, and all the skies obey I sing the greatness of our God that filled the earth with food God formed all creatures with God s Word, and then pronounced them good Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed, where er I turn my eye
If I survey the ground I walk or look up to the sky! There is no plant or flower below (I sing the greatness of our God) But make Thy glories known (I sing the greatness of our God) The clouds arise, and tempests blow (I sing the greatness of our God) By order from Thy throne (I sing the greatness of our God) While all that borrows life from Thee is ever in Thy care (I sing the greatness of our God) And everywhere that we can be, Lord Thou art present there (I sing the greatness of our God) I sing the greatness of our God Prayer of Confession Let us be still before God. Rest quietly in God s presence. Listen. Let us bring before the Lord the words that may have hurt and all those left unsaid; The anger we have felt and resentment we have fed. Let us be still before God. Rest quietly in God s presence. Listen. God is slow to anger, willing to forgive, and full of Grace. Draw near to God; rest quietly in God s presence. Listen. Amen. Response: What a Beautiful Name Words and Music: Ben Fielding and Brooke Ligertwood You were the Word at the beginning One with God the Lord Most High Your hidden glory in creation Now revealed in You, our Christ What a beautiful Name it is What a beautiful Name it is, the Name of Jesus Christ, my King What a beautiful Name it is, nothing compares to this What a beautiful Name it is, the Name of Jesus You didn t want heaven without us So Jesus, You brought heaven down My sin was great, Your love was greater What could separate us now?
What a wonderful Name it is What a wonderful Name it is, the Name of Jesus Christ, my King What a wonderful Name it is, nothing compares to this What a wonderful Name it is, the Name of Jesus Death could not hold You The veil tore before You You silence the boast of sin and grave The heavens are roaring the praise of Your glory For You are raised to life again You have no rival. You have no equal Now and forever God, You reign Yours is the kingdom, Yours is the glory Yours is the name above all Names What a powerful Name it is What a powerful Name it is, the Name of Jesus Christ, my King What a powerful Name it is, nothing can stand against What a powerful Name it is, the Name of Jesus Sermon: God and Country Scriptures and a few quotes Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. (John 18:36) Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. (Acts 2:43-47) So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:20) An ambassador speaks for his own country There are times when the Christian has to speak for Christ. In the decisions and the counsels of the world his must be the voice which brings the message of Christ to the human situation. William Barclay Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you wish to have no fear of the authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive its approval; for it is God s servant for your good. (Romans 13:1-4a)
As Jesus Christ is God s assurance of the forgiveness of all our sins, so in the same way and with the same seriousness is he also God s mighty claim upon our whole life. Through him befalls us a joyful deliverance from the godless fetters of this world for a free, grateful service to his creatures. Declaration of Barmen, 8.14 We reject the false doctrine, as though there were areas of our life in which we would not belong to Jesus Christ, but to other lords areas in which we would not need justification and sanctification through him. Declaration of Barmen, 8.15 To assert that I am on God's side and you are not, that I know God's will and you do not, and that I will use the power of government to advance my understanding of God's kingdom is certain to produce hostility. By contrast, moderate Christians see ourselves, literally, as moderators. Far from claiming to possess God's truth, we claim only to be imperfect seekers of the truth. We reject the notion that religion should present a series of wedge issues useful at election time for energizing a political base. We believe it is God's work to practice humility, to wear tolerance on our sleeves, to reach out to those with whom we disagree, and to overcome the meanness we see in today's politics. John C. Danforth The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever Amen.
