Amen. The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to Luke (19:28-40) After telling a parable to the crowd at Jericho, Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, "Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it.'" So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" They said, "The Lord needs it." Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!" Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, order your disciples to stop." He answered, "I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out." 1
Blessing of the Palms Priest: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Priest: It is right to praise you, Almighty God, for the acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was proclaimed as King of kings by those who spread their garments and branches of palm along his way. Let these branches be for us signs of his victory, and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Priest: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. All: Hosanna in the highest. Priest: Let us go forth in peace. All: In the name of Christ. Amen. Priest: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Priest: Let us pray. Silence Almighty and ever living God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE WORD OF GOD A Reading from the Book of Isaiah (50:4-9a) The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens-- wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty? 3
Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. All: Thanks be to God. Psalm 31:9-16 9 Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am in trouble; * my eye is consumed with sorrow, and also my throat and my belly. 10 For my life is wasted with grief, and my years with sighing; * my strength fails me because of affliction, and my bones are consumed. 11 I have become a reproach to all my enemies and even to my neighbors, a dismay to those of my acquaintance; * when they see me in the street they avoid me. 12 I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind; * I am as useless as a broken pot. 13 For I have heard the whispering of the crowd; fear is all around; * they put their heads together against me; they plot to take my life. 14 But as for me, I have trusted in you, O LORD. * I have said, "You are my God. 15 My times are in your hand; * rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. 16 Make your face to shine upon your servant, * and in your loving-kindness save me." A Reading from Paul s Letter to the Philippians (2:5-11) Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, 4
being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-- even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. All: Thanks be to God. Choir Anthem Sing Hosanna The Passion of Our Lord (Please refer to Passion Booklet for the reading and return booklets after the service.) Sermon Prayers of the People Intercessor: God offered his son, our Savior as a sacrifice for the world. God, you loved us so much that you offered your son as ransom for our faults. Grant that during this week we walk with Jesus in spirit to the cross to witness the realities of the agony that he suffered. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for Bishop Kevin, that he may lead the Church to carry the cross as a token of our redemption. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Dear God, have mercy on those people who are wrongfully imprisoned. May their faith be strengthened. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. 5
Heal the sick and comfort the lonely that they may boldly proclaim Jesus as Lord. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Priest: Lord keep us in your love, preserve our community, and do not let us become separated from one another. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Peace Priest: The peace of the Lord be always with you. All: And also with you. All: We lift them to the Lord. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Priest: God of all, creator of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. All: Glory to you for ever and ever. At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. All: By your will they were created and have their being. 6
From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason and skill. You made us the stewards of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. All: Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman to fulfill your Law, to open to us the way of freedom and peace. All: By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed. And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: The people are invited to stand or kneel. Holy, Holy, Holy Blue Hymnal No. S-130 And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the blood, now celebrate his gift to us. We now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. All: Come Holy Spirit, Breath of Eternal Life. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this bread and this cup, our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, All: We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. God of our holy Ancestors; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God of Deborah, Ruth and Esther; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of 7
coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; For power only, and not for compassion; For pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. All: Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor, glory, worship, and praise, now and forever. Amen.
