Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe QUESTION OF THE WEEK Why do we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King? The liturgical year ends with the feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. What is the significance of this feast? Kings and kingdoms are not part of the American cultural or political experience. Human beings in general--and Americans in particular--tend to resist and oppose any institution that does not allow people to play an active part in the decision-making process. Yet with this last Sunday in ordinary time, we celebrate the feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. The feast was begun by Pope Pius XI in 1925 to counter atheism and secularism. Pius wanted to communicate the belief that Jesus is lord of all, the king of creation. The biblical reality, however, is that Jesus is not a king like the kings of this world. These kings "lord" it over their people exercising power, at times without restraint. Jesus is lord indeed; yet he came to serve, not to be served, and to give his life for the sake of all. A monarchical reign is not a characteristic of the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God that Jesus proclaimed is one in which all people are treated with dignity, and valued for who and what they are. It is a kingdom that actively cares for the poor, the homeless, the alienated, and the oppressed, as it mobilizes to establish justice and a right relationship with all. This is what every institution that models itself on Jesus the king has to be about. As we celebrate this feast, let us pray that all institutions, especially the church, model themselves on Jesus' servant leadership. Liturgical Publications Inc Beginning on the Feast of St. Andrew, November 30, this prayer is traditionally recited until Christmas: Hail and blessed be the hour and moment In which the Son of God was born Of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, [here mention your request] through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His blessed Mother. Amen. St. Andrew is one of the patron saints of Scotland and Poland! GOSPEL MEDITATION ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE November 25, 2018 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe If you brought your child to the restroom during the Liturgy of the Word, you might walk away with one of two interpretations of Jesus as King. The first and second readings are bold and victorious. We see Christ coming on the clouds for the final judgment of heaven and earth. The Gospel sets a very different tone. Jesus is under arrest and facing death before Pontius Pilate. We know how this story will end. So if Christ is King, what does it mean? Is he a glorious conqueror or a suffering servant? "My kingdom does not belong to this world." Here is the heart of Jesus' reign. He is a king -- and his "subjects" are alive and well on earth -- but, ultimately, Jesus' kingdom transcends our earthly concepts of power. Jesus faced down the temptation of a solely earthly kingship. At the close of his 40 days in the desert, the devil offered him the kingdoms of the world. Jesus only had to sacrifice his heavenly values and worship Satan. The same temptations to distort the kingship of Christ are present to us today. Jesus' invitation also endures. "Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." It is important for us to belong to the full truth of Christ's kingdom. First, our own hearts must be transformed. Our own rebellions in favor of selfishness and against holiness must be conquered by God's grace. Second, we must work to transform the world as best we can in our own corner of it. Like Jesus shows us by his life and death, this doesn't mean domination. It means service, sacrifice, respect, and love. Our lives must "testify to the truth" of Jesus Christ, who lays down his life for his people. That is the true beauty of Christ the King! Liturgical Publications Inc
