From the Pastor s Desk Today is the Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time. Thank you to all who made our parish picnic an enjoyable event. A list of benefactors appears on page four. The Parish Finance Committee will hold its regular meeting at 7:00pm on Monday August 28. This gives me the chance, once again, to thank you for your continued financial support of the work and mission of Saint Hugh Parish. According to Pope Francis: The annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation (September 1) offers to individual believers and to the community a precious opportunity to renew our personal participation in this vocation as custodians of creation, raising to God our thanks for the marvelous works that He has entrusted to our care, invoking his help for the protection of creation and his mercy for the sins committed against the world in which we live. During the holiday Mass on Labor Day, Monday September 4, we will bless the tools or symbols of our work. Those attending are encouraged to bring a work related item for the blessing. Effective communication is the goal of every pastor. With that in mind, check out the recent upgrades to our parish website: sthughlyns.org and look for vast Improvements to our weekly bulletin beginning next week. With the September 3 issue we will expand to eighth pages with four pages of full color. Your thoughts, suggestions, and digital pictures of parish events are most welcome. Please email the bulletin editor at marcreszel@gmail.com Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish. Father Reszel Of musical note Why join music ministry at St. Hugh? We are a group of people who are involved, caring, praying and dedicated to the musical prayer life of the church. What does a choir do? The choir leads the assembly s song, provides embellishment to things the assembly does well, and does things beautifully what the assembly cannot do for itself. What difference does music make? Music carries us to a place where words alone can never take us and is a special sign of unity, oneness, faith and spirit. Contact Fran Serpe to share your talents and serve the Church. Who is Hugh? St. Hugh of Grenoble (1052-1132) Bishop and Reformer Pious and theologically facile since childhood, he was a canon, not yet ordained priest, when the Council of Avignon named him bishop in 1080 and assigned him the diocese of Grenoble during the reforms of Pope Gregory VII, who ordained Hugh personally in 1080. The Church was battling corruption and violations of celibacy within its own members, lay control of Church property, and general religious indifference or ignorance. After two years, he wanted to resign and enter a monastery, but the Pope asked him to stay - and he did for the next 50 years. He was reasonably successful as a reformer, was an eloquent preacher and fearless supporter of the Papacy. In 1084, he welcomed Bruno of Cologne and six of his companions after seeing them under a banner of seven stars in a dream. He installed them in the snowy heights of Chartreuse, where they founded the first Carthusian monastery. He died in 1132 and was canonized just two years after his death. This weekend, parishes throughout the archdiocese are participating in a national collection to complete the final major project, the Trinity Dome, on the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC before its 100th anniversary in 2020. Also known as America s Catholic Church, the National Shrine is the largest church in the United States and is a beacon of our faith to the nearly 1 million who visit it each year and to the millions more who visit and work in our nation s capital. More information can be found at trinitydome.org and/or nationalshrine.org. Thank you. This is a one-time national collection. Envelopes for this cause are not in your packet, but are available from an usher and at the table in the church vestibule. Place your gift in the basket with your regular weekly offering. Stewardship thought Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid? - Romans 11:35 St. Paul reminds us of a central fact of stewardship. We cannot give the Lord anything, because God already owns it all. God made everything. All that we can do is return a portion of God s many gifts back to Him. Sincere gratitude for our gifts opens our hearts to joyful generosity! Wills / Bequests After providing for your loved ones, please consider naming Saint Hugh Parish as a beneficiary of your estate. Shop with SCRIP/Gift with SCRP Our most convenient parish fundraiser can benefit St. Hugh when you do your ordinary shopping and/or when you give a gift card as a present. The list of all participating retailers is posted in the church vestibule and is available at www.sthughlyons.org In stock scrip (gift cards) are available after the weekend Masses and during the week at the parish office. Next weekend, see Marilyn Krebel (4:00), Rosemary Kufta (8:00), or Kim Thomas (10:30). They have in-stock scrip for: Amazon $10, CVS $25, Dunkin Donuts $10, Home Depot $25, itunes $15, Jewel $25, Kohl s $25, Menard's $25, Starbucks $10, Target $25, Walgreens $25, and Walmart $25. New and improved bulletin - NEXT WEEKEND Beginning with the September 3 issue, our weekly bulletin will expand from six to eight pages. Our new agreement with J.S. Paluch will provide for four pages of full color. The parish bulletin rebate remains the same. The ad page will appear on page 7 (the inside back cover). The addition of color is an encouragement to include more photography. Your thoughts, comments, suggestions are always welcome. Please send your pictures and your ideas to the bulletin editor at marcreszel@gmail.com Communion Twice by Paul Turner Catholics usually share communion at Mass no more than once a day. The Catholic faithful gather once a week and share communion at the Sunday Eucharist. Some attend weekday Masses. Ordinarily, we participate in no more than one Mass a day. But there are exceptions. The custom of communion only once a day restrains abuses by those who might spend their day going from Mass to Mass and communion to communion. To share communion devoutly requires good preparation. The benefits of a good communion do not quickly disappear. On some days, though, circumstances bring us to Mass more often. In these instances the church does permit communion twice on the same day. For many years, the only exceptions were on days such as Christmas and Easter, when some people participated in a vigil Mass as well as a Mass on the day itself. More recently, the faithful were allowed to receive communion a second time if the circumstances were completely distinct. For example, if you attended a funeral Mass in the morning, you could share communion again at a Mass in the evening. The same applied to days when you participated in Masses that included baptism, confirmation, marriage, ordination, anointing of the sick, or first communion. You could share communion twice if you attended two Masses on those days. Now these rules have been further relaxed. The occasions no longer need to be distinct (canon 917). If you participate in two Sunday morning masses, for example, you may receive communion a second time. Communion binds together those who join in prayer for a specific event. People should avoid needlessly multiplying Masses on the same day. But if your plans require you to attend Mass twice in one day, share communion twice. Colucci family Gilbert family Gnat family Reszel family Treasures from our tradition Eucharistic Prayer II is a popular choice for Mass since it is both simple in structure and short. It is written with a preface, which is the section after the dialogue "The Lord be with you... Lift up your hearts... Let us give thanks," which introduces all the Eucharistic Prayers. The preface states the reason for the eucharistic assembly on that occasion, and there are dozens of them covering almost every imaginable gathering for prayer, some specific to feasts, others for Masses for the dead or for other needs. The preface attached to the second Eucharistic Prayer may be dropped in favor of a more appropriate choice, especially one of the prefaces for weekdays. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says that Eucharistic Prayer II is best suited for weekdays or "special circumstances." In practice, however, it has become the common Sunday prayer because of its brevity and its comfortable familiarity. It also includes an optional phrase for adding the name of a deceased person remembered in the Mass, and therefore is often prayed at funerals. Article 50 of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy specified that the rites are to be simplified and restored "to the vigor they had in the tradition of the Fathers." The rebirth of this ancient Roman prayer is a worthy response to this call. -Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
