Kindergarten-2nd November 8-9, 2014 Samuel I Samuel 3 Adventure Bible for Early Readers (pp. 321-322) Connect Time (20 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (25 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. God Wants to Speak to Us Today is all about listening to God. Get ready to share ways that God has spoken to you. And if kids come early, you could play the activity outlined in the small group extra time section. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. As kids leave, encourage them to listen to God this week and record what he says in their notebook. God spoke to Samuel and Samuel obeyed God! God wants to speak to us too, but we must be prepared to obey him.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. MAKE A RAINSTORM The first part of today s activity might be best played as a large group. If you play in small groups, respect the other groups and keep your noise level down. Do NOT tell kids what you are doing. Just tell them to listen carefully because you are going to make something together. Give these directives and let them make each one for about 5-10 seconds before moving on: o Rub your fingers together o Rub your hands together o Snap your fingers o Clap softly o Clap loudly o Pat your chest o Pat your legs o Stomp your feet o Stomp and clap o Add crashing noises with your mouth Go backwards: o Stomp and clap o Stomp your feet o Pat your legs o Pat your chest o Clap loudly o Clap softly o Snap your fingers o Rub your hands together o Rub your fingers together o Stop. Ask the kids what that sounded like. See if anybody can guess a rainstorm. Affirm their listening skills: because they listened, they made something really cool together. If you have a lot of time left, you can let a couple kids lead. Then break into small groups and ask kids about the best and worst parts of their weeks. If you have extra time, remind them of your expectations for their behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) retell the story of Samuel, (2) recognize that God speaks to us, and (3) understand that we must respond when God speaks. Why? It s important for kids to begin to have conversations about what we should do when God speaks to us. Tip: If you don t have time to get through both activities, that s OK. Just get as far as kids will let you go. REVIEW AND DIG DEEPER 1. Who did Samuel think was calling him the first three times? 2. When Samuel thought Eli was calling him, what did he do? 3. Why do you think he went running to Eli? 4. Who was actually calling to Samuel? 5. What did Samuel say when God spoke to him? 6. Why did God speak to Samuel? 7. What did Samuel do when God spoke to him? ACTIVITY #1: PROCESS Give each kid a little notebook Ask each kid to write/draw on the first page something they heard from God in large group, something they ve heard from God another time, or a thought they have in their head right now. Ask kids to share. Affirm when they ve heard from God. Or suggest that a thought in their head may be from God (if that s appropriate). Share the most recent thing you ve heard from God. ACTIVITY #2: RESPOND Have kids turn the page. Say, If God spoke to you, what should you do about it? Give an example based on what you re going to about something God has to you recently.** o **Basically, help kids take steps to obey God when he speaks. If God put a thought about how to help a friend, encourage them to help that friend. If God said, I love you, encourage them to say it back or tell a friend. This activity (Continue on the following page)

2 might be tough for some kids but that s OK. It ll give them a chance to make space to hear from God, and that s important. Encourage kids to write in their notebooks every time they think God is speaking! *Pray, asking God to give each kid the strength and courage to obey him this week. Ask him to continue to speak to us. *Finish by completing coloring pages! Extra time? Try this listening game: Say: I m taking a plane to (choose a destination) and I m taking (choose an item or person). The first letter of the destination must be the same as the first letter of the item or person he s taking, but don t tell the kids that rule! For example, you might say, I m taking a plane to Florida and I m taking French fries. Ask the kids where they want to go and who/what they want to bring. If they choose a location and item/person to bring (both of which share the same first letter), they can come with you on the trip. If they don t, they can t come with you yet. Encourage them to listen very carefully to see if they can figure out who can come and who can t. (But at the end, tell them WHY some could come and some couldn t! And assure them that you d want them all to come along.)

1 Share a personal example of a way God speaks to you. This is really important for kids to hear. As you tell the story today, really use your microphone or at least practice your own booming voice! *Click to play intro music. Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids Club. It s great to see you here. The way you guys all made sounds together during Connect Time was awesome! What was that sound you were making? (Let kids say: A rainstorm.) Whew, that was quite a thunderstorm! How were you guys able to create that? (Let kids respond.) Yeah, you made noises. But first, you had to listen. INTRO: LISTENING GAME Let s listen really carefully to some sounds and I want you guys to see if you can figure out what they are. When you think you know, just silently put your hand in the air, like this. Don t say what it is yet That way, other kids can keep listening. Then I ll call on someone to guess. Ready? (Play the following sounds and have fun letting kids guess. Some of them may require hints:) Rain Hail Wind Thunder Fire crackling Leaf crunching Bubble wrap Foil crinkling Wow, you guys did really well! Now I have one more challenge. We re going to sit perfectly silent for 10 seconds and see if we can hear any new sounds in the room. Ready, set, freeze! (Count to ten in your head, then continue.) So what did you guys hear? (Let kids share. Maybe they say things like, a person breathing, music from another room, a cough, etc.) You re right!

(Call out any small noises you heard.) And all those things were going on the whole time. We just couldn t hear them until we really listened close. I think you re ready to hear today s story, which is all about a guy named Samuel who learned how to listen to God. THE STORY OF SAMUEL: GOD SPEAKS! Samuel was a boy who lived with an older man named Eli. Eli wasn t Samuel s dad, but he was taking care of him. Eli was a priest and was teaching Samuel how to follow God. One night, Samuel went to bed. Then God called to Samuel! He said (use your microphone): Samuel! Well, Samuel thought Eli was calling to him! So he got up (spring up), went running to Eli s room (pretend to run), and said, Here I am! But Eli said, I wasn t calling to you go back to bed! Hmmmm, strange, huh? GOD SPEAKS TO SAMUEL A SECOND TIME It was still the middle of the night, so Samuel went to bed. Then God called to Samuel again! He said (use your microphone): Samuel! Now, if you guys heard a voice in the middle of the night, who would you think it was? (Let kids respond.) Yeah, I might think it was (person at your house). And what would you do if somebody called your name? (Let kids respond.) Yep, I d probably go see what they needed, too! So, Samuel got up, went running to Eli s room (pretend to run), and said, Here I am! And just like last time, Eli said: I wasn t calling to you go back to bed! GOD SPEAKS TO SAMUEL A THIRD TIME Well, Samuel went back to bed. (Lay down and pretend to be asleep.) And for the THIRD time, he heard his name (use your microphone): Samuel. Once last time, Samuel went to Eli s room (pretend to run), and said, Here I am! This time, Eli realized that GOD was the one calling Samuel. He said, Next time, say, Speak Lord! For your servant is listening. SAMUEL LISTENS (AND HEARS FROM GOD!) So Samuel went back to bed and when he heard his name again, he said, Speak Lord, for your servant is listening. Let s all pretend to listen. (Lead the kids in putting hands to your ears again.) And guess what, because Samuel was ready to listen AND obey, he got to hear from GOD. That s pretty cool, huh? God wants to speak to us because he has special things for us to do. God spoke to Samuel and gave him a special job.

To find out what that is, let s turn to our very own Shrimpita, coming to us via video feed. As you watch this video, see if you can figure out what special job God had for Samuel. Video: Ask Shrimpita / Samuel and Eli So what was the special job God had for Samuel? (Let kids say: listen to God and share messages from him.) That s right, he wanted to give Samuel special messages to share with others. And guess what, you guys? God wants to speak to YOU too! He has special jobs for you to do. LEARNING TO HEAR FROM GOD But God doesn t usually speak in a voice like he did to Samuel. So at first, it can be hard to know how we hear God s voice. Remember in the beginning, how we were perfectly silent and heard all sorts of things we don t normally hear? Does anybody remember what we heard? (Let kids recall.) That s right! And that s kind of like with God. When we stop and really listen, we might not hear noises, but we might have a picture pop into our mind. Or maybe we go to sleep and dream something that we just can t forget. Maybe we sing a song and we notice some words. God can even speak to us through another person like a friend or a teacher. There s lots of ways God can speak to us. Sometimes God speaks to me by (share a personal example). Now we re going to LISTEN to some ways we can hear from God and spend a minute talking to him. So lay down if you want. Close your eyes. Get comfortable. And listen. (Let kids rearrange, then start the video.) Video: Take A Minute / Listen to God OK, you guys can sit up. If you heard from God, you can share it in small groups. If you didn t, that s OK! Just keep asking God to speak to you, and slowly, you ll learn to hear his voice. You can practice listening by sitting quietly, drawing, writing, listening to music, walking outside, or even just paying attention to what s around you. WORSHIP But now, let s tell God we love him and want to hear from him! Song: Before I Go Song: Because You Love Me PRAY Ask somebody to come and thank God for speaking to us.
