Six woes St John's 30/6/2013 @ 10 a.m. & 6:30 p.m. Readings: Ezekiel 34:1-16; Luke 11v37-54 I. Context & introductory comments One of the problems with working through Luke s gospel in its entirety, is that you can t just do the bits you like. Bits like how to pray, how to live stress-free, and so on. There s loads of that stuff throughout Luke s gospel. When you ve got 5 minutes, skim through the headings. They aren t part of the Bible. They are put there to help you find your way around. But they will give you a good feel, and Jesus definitely isn t always meek and mild, like in today s section! Something you need to know is that throughout the Bible, God s people are likened to sheep. Not the most complementary of metaphors! Have you ever met a sheep?! But there it is; Christians, God says you re like sheep. And there are men whom God calls shepherds of his flock. In the Old Testament they were prophets, priests & kings. In Jesus day they were the apostles. Since then, they re the Elders who oversee Jesus church. In the Church of England we call them names like vicars. And over all the sheep and shepherds is the one person called the Chief Shepherd of Good shepherd. Jesus Christ, who rules his church through the Bible. But there have always been some bad shepherds. The Bible often calls them Wolves in sheep s clothing. In the Old Testament some of the harshest words are aimed at the wolves, the false prophets, priests and kings. In Jesus days, his harshest words were aimed at the wolves, the Pharisees, Teachers of the Law and priests. And in the rest of the New Testament the harshest words are aimed at the wolves, false teachers in God s church. Page 1 of 11

God s shepherds are meant to look after the sheep, feeding and protecting them from the wolves. But the wolves, the bad shepherds, lead sheep astray by teaching them things contrary to the Bible. And wolves often enslave people through religious rules. That s one of the big themes of all four gospels, the conflict between Jesus and religious wolves. They keep coming at Jesus to pick a fight with him, and today they do it yet again, in two groups. First the Pharisees, who were a kind of club for people who took their Jewish religion incredibly seriously. And then the Teachers of the law or Scribes, who were often members of the Pharisees club, but whose job was to teach the Bible to God s sheep. And that s my job! So, as these guys get a real tongue-lashing from Jesus for being such bad shepherds, please pray for me and other shepherds of God s sheep, that we would teach the Bible faithfully and well. Let me pray and then we ll look together at today s fight between Jesus and the religious wolves. II.Religious wolves makes up rules for God s people: v37-42 Slide 2 So, here come the wolves, making up rules for God s people. Remember last week, Jesus has he been speaking words of condemnation and warning. He called them a wicked generation. And now a nice wolf offers him brunch. v37: When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. But... the Pharisee, noticing that Jesus didn t first wash before the meal, was surprised. Page 2 of 11

Now, this isn t about good hygiene. The Law of Moses was given by God to his saved people to show them how they ought to live. Not how to be saved and earn God s love, note. No, once God had graciously saved them from slavery in Egypt, he gave them his laws so they could show their appreciation for all he had done for them. By living his way. Which is where religious wolves go wrong, in the Old Testament, in Jesus day and today. They see God s Law as the way to earn God s approval. Remember the guy in chapter 10 who asked Jesus what he had to do in order to inherit eternal life? Jesus said, if you want to know what you need to do, love God and other people completely, perfectly and always, from the day you re born until the day you die. Simples! But God s Law wasn t just the famous 10 Commandments. The ten are like the headline act at Glastonbury! They re great, but there s loads more going on the rest of the Glastonbury weekend and all over the site. Similarly, as well as the Ten Commandments, there are 603 other laws for God s people, whom he had saved. Not how to win and deserve God s love, but how to show their gratitude to him for loving them. The Pharisee wolves and the Teachers of the Law wolves loved all these laws. So much, they made up loads more and. Seems they thought 613 laws wasn t enough to live by! For example, they d made up rules about ritual hand washing and ritual washing of dishes. Not to get rid of germs by a thorough scrub. And Jesus can t bear all their manmade rules, so he doesn t do their ritual, and the Pharisee wolf notices. Page 3 of 11

Luke continues: Then the Lord said to him, Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You foolish people! Didn t the one who made the outside make the inside also? But give what is inside the dish to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practised the latter without leaving the former undone. Where s Jesus? At a religious wolf s home. These are the guys who interpret the Bible s rules, then make up new rules God hadn t thought of, and enforce all of them on the people. They re the first-century Jewish Taliban. Let me show you what God thinks of people adding to or changing what he says in Scripture. Slide 3 Firstly, from the Old Testament, Proverbs 30v5-6: Every word of God is flawless... Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar. Slide 4 Then from the end of the New Testament, Revelation 22v18: I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life... What Jesus is saying is this: I don t acknowledge your rules. I wrote the book, the Bible, because I m God. It s not your job to write rules alongside of mine. And the problem with your religious rules is they re all about the external, they re not about the internal. Page 4 of 11

See, God s more interested in your motives, what s inside, than your religious observances, what Jesus calls the outside. So in 1 Samuel 16v7 God s choosing a king and says: The LORD doesn t look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. So he s looking at your & my heart right at this very minute. Is he seeing your heart like those religious wolves, v39, full of greed and wickedness? Or is he seeing, this very minute, a heart that longs to love him and love others? Because he has little or no time for even the best of religious observances if your heart s not right. A second problem with religious wolves is that they raise preferences to the level of God s commands. Check out all the Bible s commands. You won t find any about smoking, drinking alcohol, dancing, body-piercing, tattoos, what to wear in church, appropriate music for worship, sermon length, who leads services, who helps with communion, what service book we use,, ornaments in church and flowers at Lent. Do I need to continue? Is it a sin to have preferences? Of course not! Everyone knows that PC s are better than imacs; The Voice is better than X-Factor; ios 6 is better than Android Jelly Bean; BMW make the best motorbikes and Helmanns the best mayonnaise. They re just not important to God. He doesn t care what mobile phone you use. He does care what you say into it and what you watch on it. So I can t tell you what to think or do about anything not clearly encouraged, demanded or banned in Scripture. Yet, religious wolves makes up rules for God s people. Page 5 of 11

III.Religious wolves want praise from God s people v43-44 Slide 5 Next, religious wolves want praise from God s people. v43: Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and greetings in the market-places. Woe is a prophetic word used to tell sinful people to repent and change because God hates what they do. You don t want Jesus saying woe to you! And this is embarrassing, to preach this bit of Luke the day after Pete s ordination at the Cathedral! Where I dressed in splendid robes designed to make sure everyone realised that I m more important than they are. And then I paraded into the Cathedral past the plebs. And, yes, straight to the most important seats at the front! The only thing I can say in my defence is that I hated it! Not because I especially hate robes and processions. But because of what it does to my heart. It s very hard to do that stuff and not feel important. It s bad for your heart, so it should have no more place in the Church of England than Jesus said it should have had in religion in his day. Now careful, remember that Jesus could see into every heart in a way that you and I never can. That s why he is judge and you re not. We re told never to judge another person s heart. And for these Pharisee wolves, Jesus knew their hearts were full of greed and wickedness as they strutted their stuff in the temple and in the market place. And he says to them, Woe, you need to repent of what I m seeing in your hearts, because it s leaking out all over your daily lives. Page 6 of 11

Now that sort of thing would have been unhelpful if they d been good shepherds, rather than wolves. But instead of helping God s sheep live lives that reflected their appreciation of God s love for them, these guys have the opposite effect. v44: Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it. Let me explain. One of God s laws said that touching dead bodies made you ceremonially unclean. That s why they painted graves white, so people didn t accidentally walk on one and make themselves ceremonially unclean, without them even knowing it. So imagine you re a teacher of God s Word, whose job it is to help people live right with God. And you re told you re like a grave; you re spiritually dead! That s as wrong with God as it s possible to be! You don t recognise Jesus as God come to you; you don t love Jesus; and you don t lead the sheep to Jesus. And as if that isn t bad enough, just hanging around with you has the same effect on people. That you make people unfit to be God s people! I couldn t bear it if Jesus said something like that to me! Jesus again turns the holiness or cleanliness tables on them. He says that their view of themselves is exactly the opposite of God s view of them. Woe to you Pharisees; God s going to judge you harshly if you don t repent and change your hearts. Religious wolves want praise from God s people. Page 7 of 11

IV.Religious wolves harm and even destroy God s people v45-54 Slide 6 Jesus final words here show that the Religious wolves harm and even destroy God s people. My friend Sue once told me she d had to sit in on a very high-powered meeting as her new boss assistant. I asked how it had gone and how she d handled it. She said I dressed to kill, looked intelligently at everyone, took detailed notes, nodded a lot and said... nothing. v45: One of the experts in the law (who clearly hadn t met Sue) answered him, Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also. No, don t stick your head above the parapet! Your friends with whom you agree on everything have just been slaughtered by the preacher-man, and you play the hurt-feelings card? Do you remember the early episodes of Star Trek? Whenever Captain Kirk and co. beamed down to the planet below, a hitherto unknown actor always went along, wearing a red, rather than blue, shirt. And you knew, as sure as night follows day, that the new kid in the red shirt was going to get killed. Well, this Expert on the Law is wearing the red shirt! These wolves have been intimidating, bullying and discouraging God s sheep with all their rules. Jesus comes for brunch, breaks their man-made rule and tells them they ve got it all wrong. And they have a little committee meeting. And one of the wolves says, Jesus, on behalf of the wolf committee, I hate to inform you, but you ve hurt our feelings, I m sure unintentionally. Look, Zachariah s crying. His dad was a Pharisee and so was his granddad! Now, Jesus, we all say things we regret. It would be really nice if you would just apologise for hurting our feelings and we ll say nothing more of it. Page 8 of 11

v46: Jesus replied, And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. Now, compare that to Jesus words that I love so much at the moment, from Matthew 11v28: Slide 7 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Don t you just love Jesus heart? Don t you want to know him better, love him more and follow him wherever he leads? Surely you don t want to follow a heavy-burden, religious rule-maker, do you? See how totally different Jesus is to these religious wolves? Exactly the opposite, in fact. They put heavy burdens on people; Jesus offers rest. They won t lift a finger; Jesus carries his people s burdens. Don t you just love Jesus heart? Don t you want to know him better, love him more and follow him wherever he leads? Jesus doesn t want to weight you down with burdens too heavy to bear. He took on his shoulders the burden of your sin on the cross so that you won t ever need to. He longs to give you not only forgiveness, but the assurance that you re adopted into God his Father s family. Secure and totally safe in your Heavenly Father s hands; loved since before the beginning of time. If you don t yet know that Jesus, chat with one of us today. Meet him; let him take your burdens, and follow him. Page 9 of 11

Following Jesus should never be a burden but a joy! Whenever I feel it as a burden, I have to look at whether I m trying to manage loads only he can and should carry. And whether I really am taking every single burden to him in prayer, day in, day out. But it s worse even than that, Jesus says, as he looks into their hearts full of greed and wickedness. v47: Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them. So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. Because of this, God in his wisdom said, I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute. ' Their forefathers killed God s prophets whenever God sent them to say Repent and turn back to God! And they re now facing not just a prophet. Not just the greatest prophet ever to live. But the Son of God himself! And as Jesus looks into their hearts, what does he see? That the wolves are planning to kill him too. And Jesus still hasn t finished with them, v52: Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you ve hindered those who were entering. You know what?, he s saying. I came to save sinners, like a doctor comes to heal the sick. And there are sinners who are looking to me for help, but they can t see me because you wolves are in the way. They can t get to me because you re blocking the path. And you re telling them the only way to God is through religion, through keeping your rules. I need to get you religious wolves out of the way so that the sinners can come to me. Page 10 of 11

Now the wolves have an opportunity here. And it might be the only opportunity these guys will ever get. The opportunity to repent, to turn around and face Jesus full on, admit he is God, and ask him to take away the burden of their sin that he has so compelingly spelt out. Will they say Oh my goodness, we re like Cain. We re like the murderers of the prophets. If you haven t come to Jesus with the burden of your sin and repented before him, today might be the only or last opportunity he will give you. Don t waste it. Come to him and lay down the burden of trying to be good enough and keeping the rules or doing the religious stuff. And if you re a Christian, but you ve wandered away from simply loving and trusting Jesus, from spending time with him and the Father in prayer and reading his word... If being a Christian has become more burden than joy... If you ve lost your first love for him and realise that you re much more into ritual and liturgy and rules and formulas than simply a relationship with your God... Then don t be like the religious wolves. v53: When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, waiting to catch him in something he might say. V.Closing prayer Page 11 of 11
