From Dec. 17 to Dec. 23 is a time of special preparation for the coming of Christ. The Church gives these days special recognition with a unique designation known as the O Antiphons. The O Antiphons refer to the seven antiphons that are recited (or chanted) preceding the Magnificat during Vespers (Evening Prayer) of the Liturgy of the Hours. The importance of O Antiphons is twofold: Each one highlights a title for the Messiah: O Sapientia (O Wisdom), O Adonai (O Lord), O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse), O Clavis David (O Key of David), O Oriens (O Rising Sun), O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations), and O Emmanuel. Also, each one refers to the prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah. The Benedictine monks arranged these antiphons with a definite purpose. If one starts with the last title and takes the first letter of each one - Emmanuel, Rex, Oriens, Clavis, Radix, Adonai, Sapientia - the Latin words ero cras are formed, meaning, Tomorrow, I will come. Therefore, the Lord Jesus, whose coming we have prepared for in Advent and whom we have addressed in these seven Messianic titles, now speaks to us, Tomorrow, I will come. So the O Antiphons not only bring intensity to our Advent preparation, but bring it to a joyful conclusion. Listed below are the O Antiphons, which are prayed before and after the Magnificat during Vespers (Evening Prayer) of the Liturgy of the Hours. I encourage you to make a new tradition this year to pray these antiphons on the eight nights before Christmas to help you welcome the newborn King. Maybe you can pray these antiphons as your grace prayer before one of your meals each day. December 17: O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, you govern all creation with your strong yet tender care: Come and show your people the way to salvation. December 18: O Sacred Lord of ancient Israel, who showed yourself to Moses in the burning bush, who gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain: Come, stretch out your mighty hand to set us free. December 19: O Root of Jesse, you have been raised up as a sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in your presence; the nations bow down in worship before you. Come, let nothing keep you from coming to our aid. December 20: O Key of David, O royal Power of Israel, controlling at your will the gate of heaven: Come, break down the prison walls of death for those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death; and lead your captive people into freedom. December 21: O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: Come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. December 22: O King of all the nations, the only joy of every human heart; O Keystone of the mighty arch of man: Come and save the creature you fashioned from the dust. December 23: O Emmanuel, king and lawgiver, desire of the nations, Savior of all people: Come and set us free, Lord our God. St. Edward, pray for us. Treu in Christus, faithfully in Christ, Fr. Rod

Thank you, Nancy, Nancy & Sherri How do Stephen Ministers receive the training and guidance they need for this ministry? The Stephen Series is being used here at St. Edward Church for training our Stephen Ministers. It is an international program that has been used successfully for over 40 years. The series not only teaches skills that will ultimately benefit those who receive care, but it also helps Stephen Ministers to grow in faith and learn to be a Christ-like presence to others in need. As more people are trained and equipped through the teachings of this series, the hurting members of our parish receive the care they need and the church as a whole is built up. We build one another up in faith when we are present with another in the midst of challenges. The Stephen Series teaches Stephen Ministers to come alongside of another and share God s love to in a meaningful, personal way. Perhaps God is calling you to be one of these caring, committed servants who offer Christ s love to those who are hurting. Stephen Ministers are the after people: After a job loss After a divorce After a serious illness After a death in the family After moving to a nursing home After any life circumstance or crisis that becomes difficult to deal with alone.
