But Jonah; But God Sovereignty meets John defiance CH-21

Courson - Sometimes God sends storms of severity in order to bring His children into port safely. Such was Jonah s case. This storm was not God s punishment of Jonah, but showed His patience with Jonah. You see, had Jonah listened, through the howling wind of the storm, he could have heard God s voice saying, I m not going to let you go, Jonah. I love you too much. So blow, wind, blow. Not every storm, however, is the result of rebellion. Jesus sent His disciples into storms on more than one John CH-21 occasion not because they were sinning, but because they had need of strengthening not to destroy them, but to develop them (Matthew 14:24; Luke 8:23)

Ferguson Now with these two stable elements gone, Jonah appears as a man who is, spiritually, all at sea. He had lost his moorings, and drifted out into the dangerous waters of backsliding from God. John CH-21 Heb 2:1 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

Theology of the Pegan Sailors: *Polytheistic : many Gods, not monotheistic; one God *Henotheistic: localized Gods over areas = Hills/seas/Valley/Forest 1Kings 20:23 (when serians were defeated by Israel) And the servants of the king of Syria said to him, Their gods John CH-21 are gods of the hills, and so they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.

John Owen - Do you mortify? Do you make it your daily work? Be always at it whilst you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you. John CH-21

JI Packer - Knowing about God is crucially important for the living of our lives. As it would be cruel to an Amazonian tribesmen to fly him to London, put him down without explanation in Trafalgar Square and leave him, as one who knew nothing of English or England, to fend for himself, so we are cruel to ourselves if we try to live in this world without knowing about the God whose world it is and who runs it.the world becomes a strange, mad, painful place, and life in it a disappointing and unpleasant business, for those who do not know about God. Disregard the study of God, and you sentence yourself to John stumble and CH-21 blunder through life blindfold, as it were, with no sense of direction, and no understanding of what surrounds you. This way you can waste your life and lose your soul.

Mark 4:35 41 (ESV) 35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, Let us go across to the other side. 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to John them, Why are CH-21 you so afraid? Have you still no faith? 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
