LEADER Bible Study Only one geographical barrier separated the Israelites from the promised land of Canaan: the Jordan River. When the Israelites arrived, the Jordan River was flooded due to spring rains and snowmelt. Any other time, the river would have been manageable, but crossing the swollen river would have been as daunting as crossing the Red Sea. (See Josh. 4:23.) 1 The Israelites had mourned Moses death for 30 days (Deut. 34:8), but now this new generation looked to Joshua to lead them into the promised land. God had chosen Joshua and promised to be with him. Joshua prepared the people to cross the Jordan River, and they agreed to obey him as they obeyed Moses. God gave Joshua a promise and a command. First, He promised to go before them and drive out all the people of the land. Then God commanded him to tell the priests to carry the ark of the Lord (a symbol of God s powerful presence) into the waters of the Jordan. Then the waters of the river would be cut off from flowing, and the waters coming down from above would stand in one heap. When this happened, all of Israel would know that God was with Joshua. All of the people passed over on dry ground. Joshua set up 12 memorial stones as a reminder of God s faithfulness in bringing Israel safely across the Jordan into the promised land. The Israelites could do nothing apart from God. He was with them, and He was going to fight for them. In John 15:5, Jesus said, You can do nothing without me. As you teach preschoolers this week, emphasize that God was still at work with His people. He was going to do even bigger things for the Israelites saving them from their enemies and one day sending them a Savior. The cross is our reminder of what Jesus has done for us: a miraculous saving we could never do for ourselves. Conquering the Land 57

The BIBLE Story Crossing the Jordan Joshua 1 4 Joshua was the new leader of Israel. He had led the Israelites to the edge of the Jordan River. God had promised Abraham that his descendants would live in Canaan (KAY nuhn). The only thing keeping the Israelites from the land God promised to them was the Jordan River. They had to cross the river. Joshua said to all the people, Get ready. Tomorrow we are going to cross the river. The river was deep and wide. The Israelites needed help crossing the river. God was going to help them. God gave Joshua and the other leaders special instructions for crossing the river. They did everything God told them to do. Some of the men carried the ark of God ahead of the people. The ark reminded them that God was with them. The men carrying the ark walked to the edge of the river. Joshua said, Listen. God is going to do something great. When these men carry the ark of God into the river, God will stop the water in the river. The people watched. The men carrying the ark took a step into the river. God made the water stop! So all of the Israelites crossed the river safely on dry ground. 58 Preschool Leader Guide

God told Joshua, Tell the people to pick up 12 stones from the middle of the river where the men are standing with the ark. They should carry the stones with them and put them down where they spend the night tonight. God had a plan for the stones. He wanted them to be a memorial. A memorial is something that helps people remember a person or something that happened. The people would see the stones and remember that God helped them cross the river. In the future, when children saw the stones and said, What are these stones? The people could tell their children that God stopped the water so they could cross the river. The Israelites did exactly what God told them to do. They picked up 12 stones and made a memorial. The men with the ark crossed the river, and the water began to flow again. The river was wide and deep like it was before. At last, God s people were in the promised land! Christ Connection: God was with Joshua and the Israelites as they went into the promised land. He showed His power to them so they would trust in Him. When Jesus came to earth, He showed His power so people would trust in Him and be saved from sin. Bible Storytelling Tips Use memorial stones: Give each preschooler a river rock to hold quietly during the Bible story. When you reach the part of the story where the Israelites made a memorial, invite children to stack their rocks one by one. Make sure the rocks are large enough that they do not pose a choking hazard. Sit in the river: Set up a row of chairs. Drape blue fabric or a blue tablecloth over the chairs. Invite preschoolers to sit beside the wall of water as you tell the Bible story. Conquering the Land 59

INTRODUCE the Story SESSION TITLE: Crossing the Jordan BIBLE PASSAGE: Joshua 1 4 STORY POINT: God led His people through the Jordan River on dry ground. KEY PASSAGE: Deuteronomy 31:8 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: How can we glorify God? We can glorify God by loving Him and obeying Him. Onward, Christian Soldiers song offering basket Allergy Alert favorite toys related to the Bible story theme Look and Find activity page, 1 per child crayons or markers Welcome time Play the theme song in the background as you greet preschoolers, and follow your church s security procedures. Set an offering basket near the door to collect at an appropriate time. Post an allergy alert, if necessary. Set out a few favorite theme-related toys, such as puzzles and blocks. Activity page Invite preschoolers to look for and circle the nine hidden images in the picture. SAY Finding those hidden images may have been a little difficult. The Israelites had a difficult task in our Bible story today. Can you tell what that task might be from looking at this picture? Listen to the Bible story to find out. Pretend to be river animals Tell preschoolers that you will call out the name of an animal, and they must play out being that animal. Be prepared to offer suggestions on how to act out each animal. Use the following animals: turtle otter crocodile fish catfish dragonfly 60 Preschool Leader Guide

duck frog crayfish bat snail snake SAY All of these animals can be found at a river. A river is a body of water that moves. The water in a river goes to an ocean, a lake, or another river. In today s Bible story, Joshua led the Israelites to the edge of the Jordan River. They had to cross the river to get to the land God promised them. Listen to our Bible story to hear something amazing that God did! Play out camping Set out a tent, binoculars, backpacks, pretend campfire, life jacket, sleeping bag, and other items you might use camping. Invite preschoolers to play out camping scenes. SAY Have you gone on a camping trip with your family? What types of activities did you do? Sometimes people camp close to a river. Playing in the water can be fun, but you have to be careful if the water is too deep to walk through. We will hear about how God kept His people safe and made a way for them to cross a deep river in our Bible story today. Transition to tell the story To gain the attention of all the preschoolers to move them to Bible study, show the countdown video, turn the lights off and on, or clap a simple rhythm for the children to copy. Encourage preschoolers to swim to the Bible study area. tent binoculars backpacks pretend campfire life jacket sleeping bag other camping items countdown video (optional) Conquering the Land 61

Bible bookmark Giant Timeline gray paper (optional) scissors (adult use) (optional) Story Point Poster Crossing the Jordan video (optional) Bible Story Picture Poster Introduce the Bible story Place a bookmark or a gray piece of paper cut to look like a stone at Joshua 1 in your Bible. Invite a preschooler to open it. Reverently display the open Bible. SAY We know that the Bible is God s Word, and it is true. Our true story today comes from the Book of Joshua. Can you say Joshua? Joshua is in the first part of the Bible, so it is in the Old Testament. Point to the Bible story picture on the giant timeline. Remind children that all the stories in the Bible fit together to tell an even bigger story. The Bible tells us the big story of how God rescues sinners through His Son, Jesus. Watch or tell the Bible story Show the video, or tell the Bible story using the provided storytelling tips. Use the bolded version of the Bible story for young preschoolers. SAY God did something incredible by allowing the men carrying the ark to cross through the river. God led His people through the Jordan River on dry ground. God showed His power to the Israelites so they would trust in Him. When Jesus came to earth, He showed His power so people would trust in Him and be saved from sin. 62 Preschool Leader Guide

Practice the key passage Place the key passage marker at Deuteronomy 31:8. Invite a child to open your Bible to the key passage. Read the key passage aloud. Create motions for preschoolers to use as they say the key passage. Use the key passage song video for inspiration. SAY Our key passage says the Lord will be with you. God was with Joshua and the Israelites as they went into the promised land. God is with us too! Sing the key passage song, Deuteronomy 31:8, and the theme song, Onward, Christian Soldiers. Learn the big picture question SAY Our big picture question asks, How can we glorify God? We can glorify God by loving Him and obeying Him. When the Israelites were obedient to do what God said, everyone got to see God s glorious power in making the Jordan River stop flowing. Missions moment Display the Color Map. SAY This is a map of some of God s big world! The colored areas are places where being a follower of Jesus is not always safe. God loves everyone living in these places and wants all people to know about Jesus! God is leading many people from these countries to places where the gospel can be shared. Invite preschoolers to stand and pray when you call out their favorite color. Pray for each colored area on the map. EXPERIENCE THE STORY SESSION TITLE: Crossing the Jordan BIBLE PASSAGE: Joshua 1 4 STORY POINT: God led His people through the Jordan River on dry ground. KEY PASSAGE: Deuteronomy 31:8 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: How can we glorify God? We can glorify God by loving Him and obeying Him. painter s tape permanent marker scrap of paper river rock (optional) foam bowls, 4 plastic spoons, 2 river rocks, 24 Hop the big picture question Use painter s tape to make five squares in a line on the floor. Write one word of the big picture question on the top line of each square. Use a river rock or paper wad to serve as a stone. Direct preschoolers to form a line. Invite the first preschooler in line to toss the stone on one of squares. Then guide her to hop through the squares and pick up the stone while you say each word of the big picture question. Then lead the whole group in saying the answer while she moves to the back of the line. SAY How can we glorify God? We can glorify God by loving Him and obeying Him. Joshua and the Israelites believed God and obeyed the special instructions He gave them to cross the river. Everyone got to see how amazing and powerful God is as He stopped the water. God was glorified! When Jesus came to earth, He showed His power so people would trust in Him and be saved from sin. Jesus glorifies God more than anyone! Relay stones Form two teams. Line up teams at one end of the room. Place an empty bowl in front of each team. Place two bowls, each filled with 12 stones at the other end of the room. 64 Preschool Leader Guide

Give the first child in each line a spoon. When you say go, direct her to walk to her team s bowl at the other end of the room, put a stone on her spoon, walk the stone on the spoon back to her team s empty bowl, and drop it in. Then give the spoon to the next child in line. Guide preschoolers to continue until all 12 of their team s stones are in their bowl. The team that moves all their stones first wins. Encourage preschoolers to cheer on their team as they wait for their turn. For younger preschoolers, consider avoiding competition and leading only one team rather than two. SAY God wanted His people to set up 12 stones from the Jordan River as a memorial. He wanted His people to remember what He had done. God led His people through the Jordan River on dry ground. God showed His power to them so they would trust in Him. When Jesus came to earth, He showed His power so people would trust in Him and be saved from sin. Dig in sand Cover a table and the floor below with plastic tablecloths. Set a large plastic bin filled with a few inches of play sand on the covered table. Hide river rocks and plastic insects in the sand. Provide sand play toys and invite preschoolers to dig for the rocks and insects. SAY What sort of things do you think the people saw at the bottom of the Jordan River? Do you think they even paid attention? God led His people through the Jordan River on dry ground. God was with Joshua and the Israelites as they went into the promised land. He showed His power to them so they would trust in Him. He showed His power so people would trust in Him and be saved from sin. gallon-sized ziplock bags bubble bath, body wash, or hair gel small shells small plastic sea animals duct tape guest Suggested questions: What was it like when you first came to this country? Was it hard to make friends when you arrived? What did you believe before you heard about Jesus? How can we help people who come to our city from another country? Stop the river Fill several gallon-sized ziplock bags half full of bubble bath, body wash, or hair gel. Place small shells and small plastic sea animals in each bag. Seal the bags with duct tape. Set the bags on a table. Invite preschoolers to try to push all the contents of the bag to one side as if stopping the water. SAY God stopped the water in the Jordan River for His people to cross. We cannot stop a river from flowing. That is something only God can do. God led His people through the Jordan River on dry ground. God showed His power so His people would trust in Him. When Jesus came to earth, He showed His power so people would trust in Him and be saved from sin. Invite a guest Invite a church member who came to your city from a different country and heard the gospel, perhaps for the first time. Ask your guest to share about his or her experience and to encourage preschoolers to look for opportunities to tell others about Jesus. Allow time for questions and answers. Consider using the questions provided in the margin. SAY God showed His power when God led His people through the Jordan River on dry ground. There is no barrier big enough to stop God and His plan to rescue people from their sin through His Son, Jesus. Today, God is leading many people to places where they can freely hear and share the gospel. 66 Preschool Leader Guide

Snack and review Play the countdown video to signal the end of activities. Wash hands, and gather preschoolers for snack time. Pray, thanking God for the snack. Serve miniature marshmallows and pretzel sticks for snack. Comment that the marshmallows look like stones. Remind preschoolers that God led His people through the Jordan River on dry ground. They stacked 12 stones from the middle of the river so they would remember how He stopped the water for them to walk through. Show the Bible story picture as you ask the following questions. Retell parts of the Bible story as needed. 1. Who led the Israelites to the Jordan River? (Joshua) 2. What remind the people that God was with them? (the ark of God) 3. Did God s people have to swim across the Jordan River? (No, God stopped the water and they walked.) 4. Why did God tell the people to pick up 12 stones from the middle of the river? (so they would remember that God helped them cross the river) 5. How can we glorify God? We can glorify God by loving Him and obeying Him. Transition When preschoolers finish their snack, they may color the Bible story coloring page, play a simple game to practice the key passage or big picture question, or sing along to the key passage or theme song. If parents are picking up their children at this time, tell them something that their child enjoyed doing or did well during the session.
