Jim Powell passed away and is now with his Heavenly Father. While it is sad for all of us at FBCOC, there is great rejoicing in heaven as His Father has called him home to be with him. I believe there is a great celebration in heaven as he is reunited with his wife whom he loved very much. I only knew Jim for approximately 5 years and I believe he loved FBCOC and very much wanted what was best for us. Some day we will all be united with him in heaven for all of eternity. This mouth of August, we welcome our interim pastor, Dr. Slayden Yarbrough, to First Baptist Church of Oregon City. Let's be sure and give him a BIG FBCOC Hello. He will be a blessing to our congregation and I am sure he will meet our spiritual needs. IS THE BOOK OF JOB ABOUT WORSHIP? At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord takes away; may the name of the Lord be praised. JOB 1:20-21 There is perhaps nothing more powerful than to find the ability to worship in the face of suffering. In the Bible, we have a man who did just that. His name was Job. Job had everything taken from him at no fault of his own. Job could have cursed God, but as it says in vs. 20, he fell to the ground and worshipped God and gave praise to His name. The entire book of Job is an ode to the power of worship. We often talk about Job as a book of perseverance. We talk about it as an example of faith. And it is. But we sometimes neglect the substantial power of worship as a theme in the book of Job. In the face of unbearable tragedy, Job's reaction is worship. He finds a way to be thankful. To celebrate who God is. He grieves. He asks questions. He struggles. But he holds true to a perspective that does not waiver based on these circumstances, no matter how horrendous. We think of perspective as just a way we view the world, something simple and easy that can be adjusted, blown around by the wind. But perspective is the choice we make about what we accept as true. This is an act of worship. Declaring truth, clinging to it, and trusting in the journey it takes us on is a difficult enterprise. When suffering comes our way, and I don't wish for any of us to experience what Job experienced, let us be like Job. We have the ability to choose a perspective of thankfulness and adoration no matter what our suffering. ~Jim Leatherman, Church Moderator 1

A Word From Your Diaconate KidChurch News All Kids 4 years old through 5th grade are welcome to Join us Sunday mornings at 10:30am. KidChurch Teaching Schedule: August 5: Dora Toman August 12: Sue Crownover August 19: Shari Secor August 26: Jeannie Vance Vacation Bible School was a great success this year! We had 18 kids attend and learn about Jesus' love for them. I would like to thank all the volunteers who gave of their time, talents, and energy to help make VBS a wonderful experience. Our Mission Project was to collect funds to help rebuild churches in Puerto Rico. Summer Camp 2018 Camp Arrah Wanna Friends & Family Camp August 31 - September 3 Labor Day Weekend IT S FOR EVERYONE! Please visit camparrahwanna.org for registration and more info. 2 Your Diaconate has been the Pastor s helping hands and is always here for church family. During this time that our church family is without a Pastor, you can depend and call on your Diaconate. We are here for you. Your Diaconate works a lot behind the scenes, so you may not be aware of all they do for our church family. Each Diaconate member has a shepherding list made up of church family members. The shepherding list is posted on the bulletin board in the foyer. They pray for you, talk with you at church, call you, send cards to you and show God s love for you. Diaconate helps with baptisms, prepares and cleans up communion, as well as lining up communion servers. They make hospital visits for members who are ill or having surgery. They deliver flowers or some type of gift from the church to hospitalized or home bound members. They make home visits to new families. They take care of the bulletin boards and make sure information for church family is posted. Diaconate is responsible for food, decorations and serving at memorials. Diaconate members are the decorating committee and decorate the church throughout the year. Diaconate is also in charge of the prayer chain, this is very important because prayer is the lifeline of our church. If you would like to be on the prayer chain, contact one of the Diaconate members. They have helped with the past Block Parties and the Fall Festivals. They also fill the pulpit when the Pastor is ill or on vacation. They have filled every Sunday until our interim Pastor comes. They always fill in where there is a need. Hopefully, this gives you a better understanding of what your Diaconate does for our church family. They will continue to work hard for you and step up even more while we are without a permanent pastor.

Especially if they are about to set off on a four-day trip with six of them. Lord, grant me the patience to get through this week, I prayed as we set off, confident that I could handle whatever these kids could throw at me. What I didn t take into account was that God answers prayer. God answered that particular prayer by giving me chances to practice my patience. SO MANY CHANCES. Thank you, Lord. We had teenage drama. We had silliness during Bible study. We had kids acting like 3-year-olds hopped up on sugar. There was a why? at every turn. There was stubbornness and hurt feelings. There was homesickness. On top of it all, I was dealing with family drama. Every time I looked, I had eight new texts and three missed calls about something that just could not wait for a few days. We got through it, though. God DID give me the patience I needed. He also gave me blessings. One of my favorite memories of this year s trip is our baptisms. It was cold on Thursday afternoon, and misty. When we went down to the beach, I was wearing sweats. We had some free time, played some games, and finally the sun started to peek out, and we decided it was go time. Before we left the house that afternoon, Mateo told me he was excited to get baptized, because he was planning on having a talk with God while he was under the water. He wanted to be the first to go into the freezing water, and he came back up with a huge smile. After everyone else had gone, as we stepped out of the ocean, he ran around giving everyone giant hugs. I feel so great! he told all of us. How was your talk with God? I asked. Short. Melissa Meilinger Youth Director FBCOC 3
