HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Fifth Sunday of Lent April 7, 2019 I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him but I continue my pursuit in hope that I may possess it, since I have indeed been taken possession of by Christ Jesus. We measure so many things in life under the banner of profit and loss. I look for a bargain, I go out of my way when something is on sale, even when I don t need it. How shocking it is as I read Paul, as he speaks of rubbish what many consider of great value. Paul teaches us that what really matters is knowledge of Christ Jesus, not just knowing about Him, but having a personal relationship with Him. There is nothing as important as knowing Jesus, His great love for me, and His redeeming sacrifice, as we draw closer to Holy Week. May we make an extra effort to be freed from possessions and be possessed by Him. CHURCH OF ST. DENIS Reverend William J. P. Lago, Pastor Rev. Joseph Miele, Weekend Assistant Rev. THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL The story of the prodigal son from last week s gospel gives us pause as we reflect on our role as volunteers to the poor- servants if you will. We can learn the lesson of repentance too, but ours may not be precipitated by physical hunger as with the prodigal son. Instead, it may be from spiritual hunger, as so we need to turn toward God for relief. We also learn the lesson of mercy which is modeled by the son s father. We, like the prodigal son, may have turned away from our Father and we too are willing to be his servants in this life as we try to help those in need. The story of the son s conversion started with his own selfish demands and ended with a readiness to be a servant to his father. Perhaps we haven t run off and squandered part of the family inheritance, but we can still welcome the opportunity to be God s servant. This readiness to be His servant is reflected in the many opportunities to help through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. If you have an interest in being a servant, please join us at one of our meetings which are held the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Our next meeting will be on April 16, 2019 at 7:00 pm in Msgr. O Connor Hall (lower level of the church). If you need assistance, please call the St. Vincent de Paul hotline at 732-223-1383.

Missions)- $2,860.00 Average Envelope Donation- $9.84 THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! A Message from Fr. Bill A great big thank you to all who helped make the Fish Fry a great success! It was a fun night with great food. I look forward to this Lenten classic every year. Another Lenten classic is the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As is shared by the U.S. Bishops: Peace be with you! With these words, the Risen Lord greeted his frightened Apostles in the Upper Room on the day of his Resurrection. They were troubled, anxious, and fearful much like each one of us at some point in our lives. Christ repeated the words, Peace be with you. But then he added, Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them (Jn 20:19-23). What an extraordinary gift! The Risen Lord was proclaiming that all the suffering He had just endured was in order to make available the gifts of salvation and forgiveness. He wanted the Apostles to receive these gifts. He wanted them to become apostles of this forgiveness to others. In the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, also called Confession, we meet the Lord, who wants to grant forgiveness and the grace to live a renewed life in Him. In this sacrament, He prepares us to receive Him free from serious sin, with a lively faith, earnest hope, and sacrificial love in the Eucharist. The Church sees confession as so important that she requires that every Catholic go at least once a year. The Church also encourages frequent confession in order to grow closer to Christ Jesus and his Body, the Church. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, we seek forgiveness and repentance, let go of patterns of sin, grow in the life of virtue, and witness to a joyful conversion. Every priest is missioned by the Bishop, in his ordination, to teach and sanctify God s people. I am sent here by our Bishop to help you approach the Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. If you have not received this healing sacrament in a long time, I am ready to welcome you and help you so that you may experience God s mercy and His call to follow Jesus. There are several drop in confession times around our area, as advertised in the bulletin and on the information table. Time here at St. Denis will be in the Church on Tuesday, April 16 th, from 11 to noon and again from 6:30-8:00 pm. BINGO is played at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, 1220 1st Ave. in Asbury Park every Friday at 7 pm, Saturday at 1 pm, and Sunday at 6:30 pm. Doors open an hour and a half before Bingo begins.
