HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord April 14, 2019 Go into the village opposite you, and as you enter it you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. And if anyone should ask you, Why are you untying it? you will answer, The Master has need of it. The events of Holy Week are so well known to us. Beginning today they unfold before us again. We solemnly bring the prayers, sacrifices and good works of Lent to their conclusion. The days before us, the triduum, reliving the paschal mystery, are more than tradition. The Christ, crucified and rejected is real for us today. Jesus directive to the two disciples is directed to us. If anyone asks why you are living this Holy Week, the answer is the same: The Master has need of it. Our loving God is not asking us simply to recall or remember, but challenges us to discover the passion of Christ in our own time. As He was led through the streets to Calvary, many saw and continued business as usual. Others perhaps thought that that criminal was getting what he deserved. This is because they do not know Christ. For us believers, the tragedy of the Via Dolorsa leads to Calvary, to be followed by the joy of resurrection. This is not a week of failure, but eventual victory. The passion and death of Christ leads to the glorious resurrection. May the words of the gospel express the wish of Jesus for us this week. May it be our mantra: the Master has need of us. May this be a special week of prayer and devotion. CHURCH OF ST. DENIS Reverend William J. P. Lago, Pastor Rev. Joseph Miele, Weekend Assistant Rev. VINCENT DE PAUL As Easter approaches, Vincentians are reminded that spiritual growth is one of the three key principles of the Society. All Christian spirituality focuses on the crucified and rise Christ. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. The cross is the symbol of what is at the core of Jesus person: The way we came to understand love was that He laid down His life for us; we too must lay down our lives for one another. (1Jn 3:16) The crucified Jesus proclaims that self-giving love is at the heart of being God and at the heart of being human. We know that, through our ministry, self-giving love can be shown in many ways. St. Vincent also recommended to us to meditate on the cross as the symbol of God s love. It is most important that we ourselves experience the love God reveals through the cross, that we have a deep confidence in a personal loving God who works actively in our lives. If you would like to learn more about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, please join us at one of our meetings which are held the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Our next meeting will be on April 16, 2019 at 7:00 pm in Msgr. O Connor Hall (lower level of the church). If you need assistance, please call the St. Vincent de Paul hotline at 732-223-1383.

St. Denis reached out to our wonderful parishioners asking for donations of toys for the poor children of Tutwiler, Mississippi. The toys were delivered to the Bargain Barn in Tutwiler. The following is a letter that was received from Miss Magnolia Wilson who oversees the Bargain Barn: Dear Friends, I don t know how I can let you know what you did for the Bargain Barn last Christmas. You touched my heart because you gave us Christmas. All I can say is look how good God is. Jesus can say well done to all of you. Feel proud because you have brought joy and happiness to others. Thank you for all that you have done for the Bargain Barn and me. As you have blessed others, God shall bless you all. The Bargain Barn might be closing because there is no money to pay my salary. I am going to do everything to keep it open. Please pray for the Bargain Barn and me. God Bless You, Magnolia Wilson A Message from Fr. Bill God bless you as we enter this Holy Week. I invite you to participate in all of the Liturgies this Holy Week offers. It is the high point of our Liturgical Year and calls upon us to be steeped in the reality of the Paschal Mystery and worship God for all God has done, and is doing for us. Particularly, on Good Friday, I invite you to be part of the Ecumenical Good Friday Service to be held down the street at Manasquan Presbyterian Church at noon (the hour we remember Jesus was nailed to the cross) and then make the pilgrimage down Virginia Avenue to St. Denis Church for our Good Friday Service at 3 pm (the hour we remember Jesus died on the Cross). Traditionally, we keep these hours in a solemn way, and I am looking forward to keeping these hours, this year, with these two services as the book ends and with silent prayer in our church in-between. (Recall Good Friday is also the second day of the year that we all fast and abstain as the Body of Christ with our brothers and sisters throughout the world in solemn remembrance of Jesus salvific death on the cross.) Separately, this week, I need to let you know that I am in the process of down-sizing the Religious Education Program. As such, we will no longer have a full-time Director of Religious Education position at the parish. I am thankful to Barbara Evans for all her work on behalf of the children of our parish and I ask you to join me in thanking her and in praying for God's blessings for her as she leaves her position at the end of the month. No time is a good time for this news, but I want to give Barbara her time to plan for her future. So although Barbara will be leaving shortly before the end of the school year, I ask you to keep this in mind. I have made this decision with the fiscal well-being and the present and future of the parish in mind, along with the full consent of the trustees and Finance Council president. I am also reducing one part-time assistant and closing the Religious Education Program on Fridays. We will continue to share our faith through our Religious Education Program and continue to thank the teachers who volunteer their time, talent and faith. We will also continue to have our Vacation Bible Camp and other programs for the children of our parish. I have altered the work of Eileen Ziesmer, taking away some responsibilities and adding the responsibility of coordinating the Religious Education Program, as part of her position as Pastoral Associate for Parish Religious Formation. I will be asking for more volunteer help from you parishioners to help with things needed, not just in the Religious Education Program, but also other areas of parish life, so that although some things will be changing, our parish will continue to be a community alive with the faith that we celebrate this week. Last week s collection report had incorrect dates. The correct dates should have been: 3/17/19, 3/24/19 & 3/31/19. We regret the error and thank you for your understanding. SAVE THE DATE June 24-28, 2019 Saint Denis Vacation Bible Camp, 2-5 pm. Registration is now open for children ages 4-11. Please call the Religious Education Office at 732-223-1161 to register your child/children or to volunteer. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!
