New Members Orientation Evening: An evening is to be considered for newer Lions needing more information about Lions and what being a Lion involves. All members will also receive a booklet outlining the requirements and expectations of being a Lion. Newer members are asked to contact Secretary Jan should they feel the need to learn anything more about Lions than they glean from the booklet.. The Lions' motto is WE SERVE Lions are ordinary people from all walks of life who enjoy getting together and doing good things. We are kind and generous people who want to help. That's why we work on projects to improve our communities and protect the environment. We get enormous satisfaction from the knowledge that what we do DOES make a difference. And we enjoy friendship and fun while doing so. Whenever Lions club members get together, problems get smaller. And communities get better. Because we help where help is needed in our own communities and around the world with unmatched integrity and energy. Lions Clubs New Zealand is part of a global organisation with 1.4 million members in 208 countries and geographic regions. With this much manpower, it's no wonder that Lions Club members can achieve extraordinary things, every day. The crowd was massive at the Waterfront Festival. Well done all Lions who helped.
99th International Convention Fukuoka, Japan All Lions are invited to attend the International Convention 24 28 June 2016 in the beautiful city of Fukuoka on the southern-most island of Kyusyu, Japan. Why not join fellow Lions from around the world and enjoy the attractions of the oldest city in Japan whilst sharing in your own District Governor Elect s installation as District Governor 2016-2017? The 2016 convention will offer huge attractions for exploring the greater Islands of Japan with options for flying into Fukuoka via Osaka or Tokyo or heading North from either Singapore or Hong Kong. Friends of Lions: A suggestion has been made for the inclusion of a 'Friends of Lions' membership category with a list of contact details of helpers who would be available to assist our Club, but who do not want to make a full commitment to Lions. Clearly there will be both pros and cons to this arrangement, so members are asked to give careful thought to the idea before it is raised again. Waterfront Festival, April 2 We thank all members involved in the fantastic Festival with signs, traffic control, parking and driving on Saturday. Many times we were congratulated on the professional manner these energy sapping responsibilities which were a vital part of the Festival success were carried out with a smile ; Lions Dave and Mark Crowds line Waterfront Drive during the Annual Waterfront Festival on April 2 nd.
ITM Fishing Contest: Next year is to be: 28, 29 January 2016 Anniversary weekend. Lions are asked to be available to assist over this weekend, and a volunteer is needed to be the liaison with the organising committee. Project Managers Don t forget that each Project needs one of these. The Project Manager will be responsible for liaising with the outside groups for details like: where is project, when is project (date and time), numbers required (shifts?), duties required, equipment required, how many beers to supply, etc etc etc. Dinner Duties Don t forget to check Page One for the Duty Roster. Are you on it? Is there one? Have you checked out our websites? The latest issue of the Lions Quarterly (LQ) video magazine is available for viewing and downloading on the Lions News Network. Lions enjoy the Cancer Breakfast, March 13, Taipa. From left: Graham Stanaway, Lynette Wilson, Colin Wilson, Wayne Zander, Linda Zander Centennial Project There are three possible Centennial Projects for this coming year (2016-17): R Tucker Thompson voyages: Report Secretary Jan Mangonui Courthouse: Report President Hubert Mangonui Volunteer Fire Service Helipad: Report Lion Wayne Lion Bob makes sure that Lions Avon, Jasleen and Doug pay their fair share at the Cancer Breakfast. Neither last, nor least: Business meetings have been down in attendance for a while: are you sure that you are completely unable to attend? These meetings are important so members know: what is happening, when it is happening, to whom it is happening, and they give you (the members) the opportunity to have your say. Don t let the club become an outlet for only some come and make sure it is doing what you want it to do. It has been reiterated that all members, when they join, promise to attend all possible meetings are you available, and can you make it more often?
New Lions Year coming quickly. As can be seen on Page Two, there were no volunteers for the positions of President and Secretary. This is very important as the Club cannot function without either of these positions. Thinking caps on everyone. Part of the large crowd supporting the Cancer Breakfast on March 13 th. New Shirts (and Hats etc.) Don t forget that you can contact Lion Dave for details and supply. A small part of the crowd getting into action at the Easter Dig, Taipa, March 26. Some bedroom humour: Zone Meeting The 15 May Zone Meeting is to be held at the Fire Station, Mangonui. It is a social event in the form of a Pot Luck Lunch. This will be a chance to get to know Lions from other Clubs, so bring partners and something to share for lunch. Further details will surface before then, but mark your diary. A young up-and-coming opera singer will be present and he will entertain us with his talents.
Children of Courage President Hubert and Secretary Jan Neeson represented us at Kingston House, Kerikeri, for Children of Courage Day on April 2 nd. Ava Wilton, for whom we purchased the bed/chair earlier this year, was our nominee. R Tucker Thompson voyages: We have money for two trips from the ITM Fishing Contest. Do we want to include another? Who will approach Taipa School? Lions Centennial Project: One suggested long term project is the Mangonui Courthouse. The March Meeting felt that more information needed to be sought on the costs of repair work on this old building before we committed to assisting. Humour to close with: A Vancouver couple was going on holiday to Fiji but as his wife was on a business trip the husband went to the destination first and his wife would meet him the next day. Mayor John Carter presenting Ava Wilton with her certificate When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick email. Unfortunately, when typing her address, he mistyped a letter and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher s wife whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her email, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint. Our nominee, Ava Wilton. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen: Dearest Wife, Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow. P.S. Sure is hot down here Chaos reigns once the starter says Go at the Easter Dig.
