False God 1. God as a projection of our fears: fate, stars, demons 2. God as a projection of our needs: self-indulgence, prestige, power 3. God as support for our insecurity: anchoring a meaningless life in submission to a power-object

On YHWH as Creator compare: I have put my words in your mouth, and hidden you in the shadow of my hand, stretching out the heavens and laying the foundations of the earth, and saying to Zion, You are my people (Isaiah 51:16). Thus says YHWH, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the human spirit within (Zechariah 12:1).

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? (Job 38:4-7). The earth and its fullness are the Lord s (1Corinthians 10:26).

God s personal name is kept hidden in mystery. Jacob asked him, Please tell me your name. But God said, Why is it that you ask my name? And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, I have seen God face to face (Genesis 32:29-30).

A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like that of an angel of God, most awe-inspiring; I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name Then Manoah said to the angel of YHWH, What is your name, so that we may honour you when your words come true? But the angel of YHWH said to him, Why do you ask my name? It is too wonderful (Judges 13:6,17-18).

God reveals his name to invite us into dialogue. Moses said to God, If I come to the Israelites and say to them: The God of your ancestors has sent me to you, and they ask me, What is his name? what shall I say to them? God said to Moses, I am Who I Am. He said further, Thus you shall say to the Israelites: I Am has sent me to you. God also said to Moses, Thus you shall say to the Israelites: YHWH, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this my title for all generations (Exodus 3:13-15).

YHWH descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name, YHWH. YHWH passed before him, and proclaimed, YHWH, YHWH, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin (Exodus 34:5-7).

We are to enter this dialogue Give me an undivided heart to revere your name (Psalm 86:11). The nations will fear the name of YHWH (Psalm 102:15). I am called by your name, YHWH, God of hosts (Jeremiah 15:16) This one will say, I am for YHWH, another will be called by the name of Jacob, yet another will write on the hand, for YHWH and adopt the name of Israel (Isaiah 44:5).

Seeing God s face As for me, because I have been righteous I shall behold your face; when I awake I shall be satisfied, knowing that you have appeared (Psalm 17:15). God did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel. They beheld God. They ate and drank (Exodus 24:11).

Seeing God s face When there are prophets among you, I YHWH make myself known to them in visions; I speak to them in dreams. Not so with my servant Moses; he is entrusted with all my house. With him I speak face to face clearly, not in riddles; and he beholds the form of YHWH (Numbers 12:6-8).

For I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory (Psalm 63:2). They beheld God, and they ate and drank (Exodus 24:11). The oracle of one who hears the words of God, who sees the vision of the Almighty (Numbers 24:4 and 16). The upright shall behold his face (Psalm 11:7).

I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness (Psalm 17:15). One thing I asked of YHWH, that will I seek after: to live in the house of YHWH all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of YHWH (Psalm 27:4). In my flesh I shall see God (Job 19:26).

Answer me quickly, YHWH; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, or I shall be like those who go down to the Pit (Psalm 143:7). If you are silent to me, I shall be like those who go down to the Pit (Psalm 28:1). How long, YHWH? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? (Psalm 13:1).

Come, my heart says, seek his face! Your face, Lord, do I seek. Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation! (Psalm 27:8-9). You hid your face; I was dismayed (Psalm 30:7).

Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? (Psalm 44:24). Do not hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress make haste to answer me. Draw near to me, redeem me, set me free because of my enemies (Psalm 69:17-18). Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress. Incline your ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call (Psalm 102:2) Why do you hide your face, and count me as your enemy? (Job 13:24)

God as Father Like a father YHWH accepts the king as his adopted son: I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me (2Samuel 7:14). You are my son; today I have begotten you (Psalm 2:7). Like a father YHWH cares for orphans as his own: Father of orphans and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation (Psalm 68:5).

How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender (Hosea 11:8). I thought you would call me, My Father, and would not turn from following me. Return, O faithless children, I will heal your faithlessness (Jeremiah 3:19, 22). Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he the child I delight in? As often as I speak against him, I still remember him. Therefore I am deeply moved for him; I will surely have mercy on him, says YHWH (Jeremiah 31:20).
