Order of Worship Welcome and greetings *Responsive call to worship David Caines, ruling elder Daniel 2:20-23a Leader: Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. All: He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him. I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers. *Hymn of praise Praise to the Lord, the Almighty Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near; join me in glad adoration. Praise to the Lord, who o er all things so wondrously reigneth, shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth! Hast thou not seen how thy desires e er have been granted in what he ordaineth? Praise to the Lord, who with marvelous wisdom hath made thee; decked thee with health, and with loving hand guided and stayed thee. How oft in grief hath not he brought you relief, spreading his wings to o er shade thee! Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him! Let the amen sound from his people again; gladly fore er we adore him. words by Joachim Neander, 1680 *Prayer of adoration Call to confession Isaiah 64:6; Proverbs 28:13 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away. He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

Hymn of confession Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee; let the water and the blood, from thy riven side which flowed, be of sin the double cure, cleanse me from its guilt and pow r. Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law s demands; could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, all for sin could not atone; thou must save, and thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress; helpless look to thee for grace; foul, I to the Fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die. words by Augustus Toplady, 1776 Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace taken from 2 Corinthians 5 and Zephaniah 3 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Sing, O Daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O Daughter of Jerusalem! The LORD has taken away our punishment. The LORD our God is with us, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in us, he will quiet us with his love, he will rejoice over us with singing. *Hymn of assurance O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free; rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me. Underneath me, all around me, is the current of thy love; leading onward, leading homeward, to thy glorious rest above. O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Spread his praise from shore to shore; how he loveth, ever loveth, changeth never, never more; how he watches o er his loved ones, died to call them all his own; how for them he intercedeth, watcheth o er them from the throne. O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Love of ev ry love the best: tis an ocean vast of blessing, tis a haven sweet of rest. O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Tis a heav n of heav ns to me; and it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to thee. words by Samuel Trevor Francis, 1834-1925 Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings

Offertory hymn How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer s ear! It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds and drives away his fear. It makes the wounded spirit whole and calms the troubled breast. Tis manna to the hungry soul, and to the weary rest. Dear Name! the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding place, my never failing treas ry filled with boundless stores of grace. Jesus, my Shepherd, Brother, Friend, my Prophet, Preist, and King, my Lord, my Life, my Way, my End, accept the praise I bring. words by John Newton, 1779 Prayer of intercession for the unborn and the orphan Sermon *Hymn of response Contrasting Characters Frank Hitchings, senior associate pastor I Will Glory in My Redeemer Benediction I will glory in my Redeemer, whose priceless blood has ransomed me. Mine was the sin that drove the bitter nails, and hung him on that judgment tree. I will glory in my Redeemer, who crushed the power of sin and death. My only Savior before the holy Judge: the Lamb who is my righteousness; the Lamb who is my righteousness. I will glory in my Redeemer, my life he bought, my love he owns. I have no longings for another, I m satisfied in him alone. I will glory in my Redeemer; his faithfulness my standing place. Though foes are mighty and rush upon me, my feet are firm, held by his grace; my feet are firm, held by his grace. I will glory in my Redeemer, who carries me on eagles wings. He crowns my life with loving kindness; his triumph song I ll ever sing. I will glory in my Redeemer, who waits for me at gates of gold, and when he calls me it will be paradise, his face forever to behold; his face forever to behold. Daniel 2:1-30 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. 2 So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed. When they came in and stood before the king, 3 he said to them, "I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means." 4 Then the astrologers answered the king in Aramaic, "O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will interpret it." 5 The king replied to the astrologers, "This is what I have firmly decided: If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces and your houses turned into piles of rubble. 6 But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. So tell me the dream and interpret it for me." 7 Once more they replied, "Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it." 8 Then the king answered, "I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided: 9 If you do not tell me the dream, there is just one penalty for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me." 10 The astrologers answered the king, "There is not a man on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer. 11 What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among men." 12 This made the king so angry and furious that he ordered the execution of all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So the decree was issued to put the wise men to death, and men were sent to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death. 14 When Arioch, the commander of the king's guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. 15 He asked the king's officer, "Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?" Arioch then explained the (continued)

matter to Daniel. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him. 17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven 20 and said: "Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. 21 He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. 22 He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him. 23 I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers: You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king." 24 Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, "Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him." 25 Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, "I have found a man among the exiles from Judah who can tell the king what his dream means." 26 The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar), "Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?" 27 Daniel replied, "No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you lay on your bed are these: 29 "As you were lying there, O king, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen. 30 As for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have greater wisdom than other living men, but so that you, O king, may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind. Elders meet to pray in Pastor Novenson s office at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday morning. If you would like them to pray for you and your specific needs, they welcome you to join them. Children are welcome to participate in all worship services, no matter the age of the child. Worship sheets and crayons are available on the table outside the fellowship hall to help children interact with the sermon.
