Happy Mother's Day Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future. Proverbs 31:25 2011 Bon Venture Services, LLC St. Margaret of Antioch Church 115 W. CENTRAL AVENUE PEARL RIVER, NY 10965

Page 2 From the Desk of Father Raaser Happy Mother s Day! For those whose mothers and grandmothers are still alive love, cherish and thank them today. For those whose mothers have gone home to the Lord, let us pray for them at Mass. We also honor the Mother of the Lord today. Her maternal love embraces all of us. Our Blessed Lady is the model for motherhood. There is one more gifted mother, the great mystery and gift of the Church as our Mother. From the beginning, the early Christians referred to the Church, as our Holy Mother. The Church through the waters of baptism gives us the Divine life of God. A special day to honor motherhood is a part of every major civilization, culture and nation. Motherhood is bringing forth life, sustaining and encouraging their children. Many women who have never been mothers physically, nevertheless, brim with the ability and the passion to give and protect life and to cherish others. They teach and lead by example, they are mothers without physical children, yet they have so many more. We honor today the transcendent gift of motherhood in all its forms. Honor those who nurture others by visits to home and hospital, by providing a safe and cheerful place for preschoolers, or by being a loving, guiding presence for teenagers. Honor the older women who so often are the very backbone of parish life. Honor and thank our spiritual mothers, particularly our religious sisters, who sacrificed much to teach and to mold so many of us. In fact, in some of the women religious orders, the nuns were called mother and not sister. We need also to pray for those who have lost a child, or who have unsuccessfully tried to become mothers, and mothers who have placed their children for adoption. We pray for women who may be hurting on this day. God gave us mothers so that we could learn how to love and how to be loved. He gave us His own mother so that all mothers, and through them all of us, could be blessed and restored to holiness. Today, we give Him thanks for the gift of all those women who somehow, someway, and somewhere gave life. Our Lady of Fatima Statue visits St. Margaret Once again this year, through the courtesy of Mrs. Sylvia Saraiva, our Church is blessed to have a statue of Our Lady of Fatima for the month of May. The original historic statue was sculpted in 1947 by Jose Thedim. The image of Mary reflects the description of Sr. Lucia, one of the three shepherd children who were privileged to see Our Lady each month from May through October of 1917 in Fatima, Portugal. Our parish celebration of May Crowning will take place on Sunday, May 20th at the 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM and 12 Noon Sunday Masses with our children who received their First Holy Communion this year. Pancake Breakfast Next Sunday, after the 7:30 AM, 9 AM and 10:30 AM Masses, the Knights of Columbus and some of our teenagers will host a family pancake breakfast down in Toner Hall. A few years ago, the Knights held this very popular and successful breakfast. There will be a free-will offering for the breakfast. Why cook breakfast, when you can enjoy good food, and good fellowship. Maybe next time we can serve Irish breakfast. Just don t tell Noonans or Muddy Brook!

THE GOOD NEWS FROM YOUR PREP Prayer to the Mother of the Lord for all mothers Mary, on this day when we honor all mothers, we turn to you. We thank the Lord whom you serve for the great gift of motherhood. Never has it been known that anyone who sought your intercession was left unaided by grace. Dear Mother, thank you for your Yes to the invitation of the angel which brought heaven to earth and changed human history. You opened yourself to God s word and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Dear mother, intercede for all of our mothers. Ask your Divine Son to give them the grace of surrendered love so that they could join with you in giving their own Fiat. May they find daily strength to say yes to the call to the sacrificial love the very heart of the vocation of motherhood. May their love and witness be a source of great inspiration for all of us called to follow your Son. On this Mother s Day, Mother of the Word Incarnate, pray for us who have recourse to you.
