So you use road maps, road signs and other guide lines to help you turn right, left, go straight ahead, to reach your destination. Well, our Lenten season is a lot like those maps and road signs. The church provides in the Lenten scriptures many ideas, guidelines, and directions for us to take in our journey to reach our destination, which is Easter Sunday to celebrate the risen Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. Our Lenten season reminds us of ways to do penance, sacrifice, prayer, by attending Holy Mass daily (if possible), additional prayer times, taking time to look in on our friends and neighbors to see if they need any assistance. But just as we sometimes think we know the way in our journey and do not follow the road signs, so do we in our spiritual life think we know more than God, and we choose not to follow the signs that God and the church has put in our path to guide us on our journey to salvation. As a child in Catholic schools, I remember the emphases were on giving up the things we enjoyed, like, candy, cokes, movies etc. But as I grew older, I recall the stronger emphases was on doing something extra; like charity, visiting the sick, attending daily Mass, helping at the night shelters, and safe heavens. Fasting is a sign the church recommends to us as well, for those that are eligible by virtue of age and health. So, if you have started on your Lenten journey, use the road signs the Lenten Season provides; use your prayer book/ missal (road map) to a safe and joyful arrival at your destination, that of celebrating the risen Christ on Easter Sunday. May each of you have a great Lenten Season, and a joyful Easter. Many Blessings to all. S.K. Donald W. Grannan

CAPTAINS CORNER Fellow Knights and Ladies, Well, we had a wonderful time at the Macaroni Grill, as some of you know, we gave our lovely brides a single red rose to signify the beauty of each rose and how each of them are unique. This makes our beloved very special to us. We also gave them a very nice metal book marker which had an angel on the end and we asked them to remember whenever they saw that little angel to remember how much we think of them as our special angel. See we told you that this year was going to devoted totally to show you how much we appreciate our being able to be members of one of the Greatest Organizations and to show everyone around us our dedication to the church, our family, and this great nation we live in. You may have heard that one couple was quite upset because of their food coming late but please don t worry because they told me they were very nicely compensated by the management at Macaroni Grill- a free dinner for their family. Hearing from the rest of those attending, the food was really good and the salmon dinner was really delicious. I will have to agree it was scrumptious, plus, that Tiramisu dessert was to die for OK, we just found out that Al s Formal Wear is offering tuxedo packages at a discount to our 4 th Degree Members (or soon to be). They start at $149 polyester to tropical wool for $234. This includes coat & pants, tuxedo pleated white shirt, black bow tie, cummerbund, white gloves, suspenders, and black/gold studs and cufflinks set. If they question you have them call Mr. Kelvin Hanks at 713-791-1885. You ll Notice I added the Exemplification in April just in case you know of someone wanting to go and give them a little time for planning. WHY THE AMERICAN FLAG IS FOLDED 13 TIMES Have you ever noticed on TV or at military funerals that the honor guards pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the American flag 13 times? I've known how the 21 gun salute was determined (adding the individual digits of 1776), but only recently learned why the flag was folded 13 times when it is lowered or when it is folded and handed to the widow at the burial of a veteran. HERE IT IS: The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life. The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world. The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong." The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic. The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day. The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded. The tenth fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country

since they were first born. The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit. When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nation's motto, "In God We Trust". After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today. There are some traditions and ways of doing things which have deep meaning. Brother Sir Knights. I would like to extend to each of you my sincere appreciation and thanks for the part each of you played in the planning, organizing and execution of the American Way Awards program on Sunday the 10th of Feb. 2013 at Nolan High School. A special thanks to S.K. Bruce Mallory, S.K. Roy Simpson, and S.K. Lonnie Brown for their efforts in getting all the notifications, paper work, plaques and engraving completed; and making arrangements for the facilities. A special thanks to S.K. Bill White and S.K. Bill Mechura for their presentations of the Humanitarian and Community Service awards. A special thanks to S.K. Lawrence Bierschenk, S.K. Rich Lockwood, for their coordination of the students and families as they arrived. And to S.K. Michael Walker for giving us his beautiful voice in song. A special thanks to the Color Guard Members, S.K. John Lella CCC, S.K. Charles Parr and S.K. Tommy Jones, S.K. John Young, S.K. John Breed, S.K. Jim Shehan. A special thanks to S.K. Deacon Wendell Geiger for his opening and closing prayers. Very special thanks to S.K. Joe La Barbera Former Master for his very inspiring speech and his delivery expertise. The success of any endeavor such as was witnessed by all present at the American Way Awards on Sunday can only be achieved by the cooperation, concern and efforts of all involved. Than you all Sir Knights for an excellent job. S.K. Donald W. Grannan Friar: Fr.
