Whte House spokesman Mke McCurry told reporters earler that Lvngstone has remaned on the job because "he specfcally denes that any Improper use was made of any of these fles." McCurry has repeatedly sad Lvngstone's Job was not In jeopardy. Presdental ades sad Lvngstone was not fred because there was no evdence that the fle collectng was anythng other than an error. On the other hand, lookng for a HU,U» lu HHlll senor manager wth a securty background shows the Whte House's serousness n addressng the matter, ades Lvngstone, who s n hs md-30s, worked on the personal staff of Geraldlne Ferraro durng her vce presdental campagn and was on Gary Hart's staff when he sought the Democratc presdental nomnaton n 1984 and 1988. The BG Ncwt/Joc B.ylc Green Polce Dvson, Fre Dvson and Unversty Polce demonstrated how a multple-fatalty accdent Is dealt wth. Kaczynsk ndcted for bombngs SACRAMENTO, Calf. - Theodore Kaczynsk, the math professor turned Montana hermt, was Indcted today In a seres of Unabomber attacks. The Indctment from the 21-member federal grand jury was hand-carred to U.S. Magstrate John Moulds, who ssued a warrant for Kaczynsk. Copes were not mmedately released. Kaczynsk, 54, was arrested Aprl 3 at hs crude, one-room cabn In rural Montana and later charged wth possessng bombmakng materals. Federal agents made no bones about ther suspcons that Kaczynsk was behnd the Unabomber explosons. But untl today, he had not been charged wth any Unabomber crmes. A year ago ths month, the Unabomber threatened n a letter to the San Francsco Chroncle to blow up a plane out of Los Angeles Internatonal Arport. The next day, an authentcated letter sent to The New York Tmes sad the threat was merely a prank. That scare prompted a ban on aeral shppng of mall orgnatng In Calforna weghng 12 ounces or more. Then, n September, The New York Tmes and The Washngton Post publshed n the Post the Unabomber's treatse on the Inhumanty of Industral socety. He had promsed to stop plantng bombs that kll people. There have been no such Incdents snce then. Federal agents were drected I to Kaczynsk as a suspect by hs brother. Davd Kaczynsk contacted authortes n February, alertng them to hs suspcons based on smlartes he notced between hs brother's wrtngs and publshed Unabomber documents. The Unabomber s blamed for three deaths - two of them In Sacramento - and 23 Injures n an 18-year terror campagn that, at ts heght, vrtually shut down ar traffc and mall servce on the West Coast The 10-count Indctment accuses Kaczynsk of four of the 16 bombngs: the two fatal bombngs In Sacramento, and two other bombngs n whch the package was allegedly maled In Sacramento, accordng to a news release Issued In Washngton, D.C. The bomber struck unverstes, scentsts, arlnes and tmber ndustry lobbysts he blamed for drownng the world In technology and destroyng the envronment. Opnon X Page 2 Wednesday, June 19,1996 Press plays to the Tom prevews summer moves root of all eul Justce Paul Pfelfer When Admral Jeremy "Mke" Boorda, the Chef of Naval Operatons, klled hmself last month, he accomplshed more than just endng a remarkable lfe. * He went from beng a relatvely obscure fgure n Washngton to a sort of nstant celebrty As Mke Royko ponted out n a recent column, 'Some good dd come of ths for Boorda. [Before he commtted sucde] most Amercans had never heard of hm. Now they know he was one heck of a good guy.' Besde makng headlnes for a few days, Boorda also made journalsts do a lttle soul searchng about ther potental role n leadng a man to end hs own lfe. That, I suspect, lasted no longer than the headlnes about hm dd. After some ntal hand wrngng, no doubt the meda stands posed, ready to pounce on the next scandal that comes down the pke. I don't know f Mke Boorda really klled hmself because he dsplayed battle rbbons on hs chest that he may not have been enttled to wear. I never met the man, but t seems there must have been other, larger problems n hs lfe whch led hm to sucde. Stll I suppose to someone whose whole lfe had been servng the Navy, perhaps defamng t, even n a seemngly nsgnfcant way, was too much to bear. Boorda had been around Washngton long enough to know what he was facng when the reporters got wnd of ths rbbons story, or nonstory, as t mght have been. In the post-watergate era, t seems reporters hover lke vultures, watng for someone to stumble. It's ther tcket to fame. Sometmes there are legtmate cases of wrongdong that need to be exposed. But n the compettve world of journalsm, where beatng the next guy to the story s crtcal for survval, If an nnocent or decent person's reputaton s tarnshed beyond repar, well, sorry, but that's the way the game s played. The theory has been advanced that our socety has become overly ltgous because we have too many lawyers lookng for someone to sue. Perhaps the same apples to journalsm. We lve n the nformaton age, where even the tnest of events occurrng n the farthest reaches of the globe can be brought to our lvng room n an nstant.. Wth all the meda outlets competng for the best stores, t's nevtable that reporters must follow even the most mnuscule morsels and make them a meal. But whle most people have blamed the meda for ts role n Boorda's demse, the real culprts are the nsders who leaked the story n the frst place. In hs book Blood Sport: The Presdent and Hs Adversares. James Stewart, the former page one edtor at the Wall Street Journal, not the 'Mr. Smth Goes To Washngton" actor, wrtes of how runng a person's career and lfe has become a sport n "A Washngton culture so nured to partsan dstorton that truth s the most frghtenng prospect of all." We don't need to look far to remember people whose lves have been lad bare for publc dgeston. Everyone remembers U.S. Supreme Court Justce Clarence Thomas. He's probably the most recognzed member of the Court, but not for the rght reasons. Even f he becomes the fnest jurst ever to st on the hgh court, he wll forever be remembered for the unseemly confrmaton hearngs that put hm square on center stage. Clarence Thomas may have won the war, but the battle scars he receved wll never fully heal. It wasn't really the meda who caused the Clarence Thomas debacle though. It was the nsdous nsders who lt the fre and then fanned the flames to keep t burnng. After havng wtnessed that humlatng process, can you blame a man who has had the Washngton spotlght turned on hm for takng hs own lfe to avod a smlar, humlatng grllng? In Boorda's case, t was no doubt someone from nsde the Navy who tpped off the press; someone who was passed over for a promoton, or someone who was jealous of Boorda, the hgh school dropout from humble begnnngs who had reached the Navy's top spot over so many Annapols grads. It seems they were there for two whole days and ddn't see Mckey Mouse once. In protest, they stormed a gft shop, stole all of the cap guns, and started a new standoff, callng Hewey, Dewey, and Loue the, "nephews of Satan." Ths column s the Super Duper Extra Great HOT Summer Move Prevew Column. In the past month I spent my own money to enable me to present my very own move ratngs. Wthout further ado TWISTER - I have stll not had tme to see ths move. The best I can say s that all of my frends lked t. As I see t, ths move has fve thngs gong for t; Helen Hunt, realstc tornadoes, Helen Hunt, flyng cows, and Helen Hunt. From what I have gathered the plot s smple, mostly about a young woman's adventures wth tornadoes, and the frends she makes. As good as people say t s, I can't help but thnk the orgnal was stll better, when t was called The Wzard of Oz. Ths flm s not yet rated, by me anyway. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - Dunh- dunhdunh - Dunh - dunhdunh - Doo-do-doo. I love that theme song. For the move, U2 was asked to modernze the song. It came out great, once they got ther gutars to stop self-destructng every fve seconds. For me, the move mght've been great (t was), but f they destroyed the theme song, I would've hated the whole move. The plot was a lttle hard to follow, for the frst half of the move I couldn't even fgure out for sure f Tom Cruse was supposed to be a bad guy or a good guy. To my credt, nether could any of the characters n the move, and they had the scrpt. My ratng -1.75 thumbs up (don't ask) (Interestng sde note of the R5R MY NEXT TO. I'LL. WAKE WOLF APPEAR... No, there's a much darker sde of the Internet, somethng you mght have heard referred to as the IRC. IRC, you say, what's that? If 8 the Internet Relay Chat, a devce or functon n Cyberspace that allows users to talk to each other lve, or n real-tme. It's much lke a party lne on a telephone except t's on a computer screen. I myself, am a shameful IRC addct on the local BGNet system. It's not busy over the summer, but durng the school year, there's up to about forty users at a tme, and I'm guessng about 200 people have chatted or have checked out the IRC over the past year. We're the ones who needlessly take up your and our valuable tme on a computer for the sake of human contact (for lack of better words) va computers. I beleve the IRC to be a form of escapsm, a place where people can go and lve out ther fantases, whether n whole or partally. Not just fantases, but also from problems and worres n real lfe. We push asde our problems and attach ourselves to the world of the IRC, where most people on ft don't really care what's gong on n our lves except for those who have made frends through t, and I wll get to that n a lttle bt. The fact that t s an escape s probably what makes t extremely addctve. Add curosty and pleasure to that, and you got yourself a drug for the ages. And for some people, the IRC has taken flrtng to a new level. In person, we're sometmes nervous to openly flrt (soberly anyway). On a keyboard, t really couldn't be any easer. I should know, I flrt all the tme on t. I thnk t has much to do wth not seeng and hearng the other person, that makes us less afrad to be bold. It's not just flrtng ether, t's speakng your own mnd. On the computer, we don't know who these people are, we've probably never seen them before, so what's the harm n beng your true self? In other words, people are not scared to say anythng on the IRC. I'm serous, anythng goes, and I've met my share of nterestng people on ft. One more bad thng, the IRC s bascally a meat market and a datng servce, and plenty of the partcpants wnd up dsapponted. I would thnk the women on t would be nuts to go to bed wth a guy they just met on the IRC. That would be dangerous and rsky. Also, when two people fnally meet off the IRC, there's a chance that one or both would reject the other. Surely there must be some good thngs from the IRC... rght? Yes, there are, but not much. There have been plenty of people who have made wonderful and possbly lfelong frends through ths thng. It can also be a good way to get n touch wfth people who lve far away and avod a mountanous phone bll. I suppose It can be good for busness meetngs or transactons, although I have never heard of t been done. Also, t forces you to judge people for who they are, that s, rather-than judgng the cover of a book, you have to look nsde t. That allows us to see the wonderful and raw nature of true people n all ther glory. Another plus s that the IRC s sometmes responsble for draggng out your true beng (from not beng afrad). Ths gves us a chance to look at ourselves for who we really are and what we want. Fnally, of course, the IRC s a good way of kllng tme, although I don't recommend It. We are meant to go out and make frends rather than be cooped up n a vrtual prson. We learn to become our true selves outsde n the real world, and the vulnerablty that comes wth t has a purpose: to teach us about ourselves. We learn to conquer our fears. Escapng from them only makes thngs worse. If we do not get rd of ths unfortunate manfestaton soon enough (at least from the labs here at BGSU), scores of students may be doomed by attachng themselves to words on a screen. I beleve the IRC to be a tool that helps us hde our fears, and I hope we all know how much damage that can do. So beware, t s entcng, t s fun, N s addctve, t s even worse than televson. Smply put: BAN the IRC. You can e-mal me about ths pece or any other at gkngobgnet.bgsu.edu, I hope to hear from you!

After the law passed n 1993, the EPA created a set of antdegradaton rules - a set of rules to keep waters from gettng worse - that were OK'd by the General Assembly's Jont Commttee on Agency Rule Revew n February. The law reclassfed all 61,000 mles of Oho waterways nto sx categores. The top categores, "whch cover a small percentage of the cleanest rvers, would be carefully protected from polluton. Entertanment page sx Wednesday, June 19,1996 Blues quartet Fve Horse Johnson to play Frday "Our Intent wth dong t was to catch a real lve sound, that vbe, and I thnk we dd a really good job of dong that," sad Erc Oblander of Fve Horse Johnson when asked about the band's debut CD "Blues For Henry..." It's only been a lttle over a year snce the blues quartet played ther frst gg n ther hometown of Toledo, but the band has already developed a massve followng n the area, drawng large and dedcated crowds to the venues at whch they perform. "People tend to remember us because I play harmonca and Brad plays slde gutar..." Erc Another factor of the band's success can be attrbuted to the fact that two of the band's members were prevously n other famous area bands. Erc was prevously the harmonca player for the funk-rock band Bg Chef, and Fve Horse Johnson's gutar player Brad Coffn was a member of the well-known funk band The Great Barbeque Gods. Although the band's sound s vrtually saturated wth the rch sound and feel of the blues, Erc explaned that the band mem- bers' varous muscal tastes play a factor n Fve Horse Johnson's fnal sound. "... We lsten to everythng from Black Flag (punk) to Black Uhuru (reggae)." Erc mused. "My dad used to be n a [blues] band n the sxtes, so I used to always hear [the blues], but these last three years [the blues have] ht me really hard." Along wth makng semregular appearances n Toledo, Fve Horse Johnson has also been playng ggs n Detrot, Cleve- land, Chcago, and New York Cty, where they were recently asked to return to the prestgous nght club CBGB's. Ths Frday Fve Horse Johnson wll be celebratng the release of "Blues For Henry..." a superbly done eght song CD whch has been prced at only eght dollars, at The Asylum In Downtown Toledo. Blues enthusasts wll be delghted to know that "Blues For Henry..." was recorded wth an eght-track moble studo at famous blues landmark Hlnes Farm, and that absolutely no overdubs were used throughout the CD. Also playng wth Fve Horse Johnson at The Asylum ths Frday wll be trpl3fastacton, Detrot's own Bg Block, and the rockablly sensaton Rocket 88. Tckets for ths all-ages show are only $5, and doors open at 8 p.m. The show wll be takng place on The Asylum's man stage.
