PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Almighty and eternal God, may we who have received this eucharist worship you in all we do, and proclaim the glory of your majesty. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF PROVERBS Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she MAY 26, 2013 6

takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: "To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth - when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world's first bits of soil. When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race." PROVERBS 8:1-4, 22-31 PSALM REFRAIN O Lord our governor, how exalted is your name in all the world! O Lord our governor, how exalted is your name in all the world! Out of the mouths of infants and children your majesty is praised above the heavens. R You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, to quell the enemy and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses, R What is man that you should be mindful of him? the son of man that you should seek him out? You have made him but little lower than the angels; you adorn him with glory and honour; R You give him mastery over the works of your hands; you put all things under his feet; All sheep and oxen, even the wild beasts of the field, R The birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea. O Lord our governor, how exalted is your name in all the world! R PSALM 8 MAY 26, 2013 7

A READING FROM THE LET- TER OF PAUL TO THE ROMANS Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. ROMANS 5:1-5 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORD- ING TO JOHN Jesus said, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you." JOHN 16:12-15 This Morning s Music Franz Schubert s Deutsche Messe was originally rejected by the Vienna Archbishop's consistory but soon gained wide popularity especially in the first half of the 20th Jahrhunderts. Century. The Cantique de Jean Racine, by the 19 year old Gabriel Fauré was dedicated to César Franck. A introspective work for four-part mixed choir and organ, it won the composer the first prize for composition at the École Niedermeyer, where at that time he was still a student. The Cantique is a setting of words by the 17th century dramatist and poet Jean Racine. It was Fauré s first significant composition. The name, John Rutter, has probably graced our bulletins more than any other choral composer. He has devoted his MAY 26, 2013 8

life to composition and choral education and has guest-conducted or lectured at many concert halls, universities, churches, music festivals, and conferences in Europe, Africa, North and Central America and Australasia. In 1980 he was made an honorary Fellow of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, and in 1988 a Fellow of the Guild of Church Musicians. In 1996 the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Music upon him in recognition of his contribution to church music. He was honoured in the 2007 Queen s New Year Honours List, being awarded a CBE for services to music. This morning, I include his sensitive translation of Jean Racine s prayer (and just as an aside, the linguistic effects of Racine s poetry are widely considered to be untranslatable). And, in honour of St. Patrick s association regarding explaining the Trinity with the shamrock, we close our service with Rutter s A Prayer of St. Patrick. Both this morning s organ prelude and postlude are Trinity related. Dan Locklear s Trinity s Shield is from his collection Windows of Comfort which was inspired by the Tiffany stained glass windows at First Presbyterian Church in Topeka, Kansas. Bach s St. Anne Fugue in Eb gets its popular name from its resemblance to William Croft s hymn tune of the same name - usually sung to the hymn O God Our Help in Ages Past. Commentators have noted several Trinity themes in the work. It is in three sections, possibly representing the three aspects of the Trinity: a stentorian God the Father, a playful God the Son, and a God the Holy Spirit section which combines the previous two fugues. Its key signature contains three flats. The piece ends with a triumphant return of the opening theme played in the pedals. MAY 26, 2013 9

One does not have to have attended Saints Alive in March, when Lent and Easter traditions of the Greek Orthodox Church were explored, to attend on May 29. All Orthodox Christians follow the same calendar for Easter, celebrated on May 5 this year. The history of St. George s Greek Orthodox Church is closely linked to the Anglican Diocese and the Cathedral because of the first Greek Orthodox Church on the corner of Morris & Queen Streets having been the site of the former St. Luke s Anglican Church Hall, associated with St. Luke s Pro-Cathedral, destroyed by fire in 1905. See Cynthia (429-5945 or cynthia.pilichos@ns.sympatico.ca) regarding transportation to St. George s, 38 Purcell s Cove Road, on May 29. Calling University and College Students! University and College Students enrolled full time in the 2013/2014 academic year are invited to apply for the Cathedral s Summer Tour Guide position. We are looking for a person who is comfortable and confident working in the Cathedral, at times on their own. Preference will be given to a bilingual candidate. This person will also be available to start work on Tuesday, July 2 through August 30th. Details are as follows: $10.30/hour. Tuesday Friday 9am 4pm, Saturday 9:30am-12:30pm. Please email resumes to the Cathedral Office cathedralchurch@eastlink.ca by Friday, June 14. Thank You. An Appeal for Books of Alternative Services As some of you have noticed our supply of The Book of Alternative Services has seen a great deal of wear and tear. Some covers show a great deal of wear, but inside all the pages are there. We have been using book binding tape to repair the covers to allow us a few more years of use. Other books which look good on the outside have missing pages and are being collected to be disposed of in the proper manner. It is hoped that if every member of our church congregation gave $23.00 we could buy a Book of Alternative Service to replace those being disposed of and increase our supply. If you wish the book given in memory of a loved one this can be noted on the inside cover. If you could place a envelope with your donation and how you would like the dedication to read in the collection plate this will allow us to purchase much needed new prayer books. Saint Catherine s Group The Saint Catherine s Group will be holding a bake sale following the 10:30am today, May 26 th. BULLETIN NOTICES 14
