Course Details: The Five Elements is an ancient oriental system for understanding how all of nature, and ourselves, work in an interconnected way. Everything in nature is seen as a manifestation of the Water, Tree, Fire, Earth or Metal Elements, including our own boides, emotions and personal development. This elegant system allows us to see the connection between any aspect of life such as our movement and activity, internal health, food and emotions. On this course you will learn to appreciate the unique qualities of each Element, and how it manifests physically through pairs of organs and meridians, are expressed through certain emotions and creative activities, and can be supported with certain foods, exercises and healing methods. You will learn how to nourish each of your Five Elemental energies, how to diagnose or recognise the Element or Elements which are most imbalanced in you and others, and therefore hold the greatest learning and healing. The first five weekends will look at each of the Five Elements including: Appreciating the elemental energy in nature and in our lives, and bodies. Do-in and Qi Gong exercises for this Element. Giving shiatsu to help the pairs of organs and meridians of the Element. The dietary and life style changes that support this element. Specific lunches for the Element being studied that weekend. Reflection on the emotional healing in this Element. This course will give you great insights into your health and life, and some great tools for helping you move forward on your healing path. You will also learn a great system of shiatsu to help others with their healing. You may want to do this course as a way of supporting your own growth and healing, to learn how to offer hands on healing to friends and family, or as a basis for further shiatsu training to become a professional shiatsu therapist.

What Is Shiatsu? Shiatsu is an ancient healing art from Japan, which uses finger or palm pressure on the meridians or energy pathways of the body to create a good flow of Ki or life energy through the whole body. It also uses body stretches, limb rotations and a variety of other techniques to promote and rebalance Ki flow. It has become widely used in the West with a variety of musculoskeletal problems, respiratory, digestive and other internal problems, to promote healthy pregnancy and birth, to aid recovery from addictions, and for general stress reduction and health maintenance. As well as being a powerful healing art for others, shiatsu also brings much healing and insight for the person giving shiatsu, and in a similar way to Qi Gong or Tai Chi can be used as a self-development practice, at the same time as bringing healing to another! Who is the course open to? People who have completed a Shiatsu Discovery Weekend or an Introduction to Shiatsu either at the Devon School or another school in the UK or elsewhere. Our next Shiatsu Discovery Weekend is 22/23 September. Therapists who work in the field of acupuncture, massage, sports massage, midwives and physiotherapy would find it of great benefit in their work, and people who practice Tai Chi, Qi Gong and similar arts will find it very complementary to their practice. If you haven t completed an Introduction to Shiatsu Course, and are unable to attend our September Weekend you will need to attend the introductory day on 26th October prior to the course at an additional cost of 50. This day will cover the essential basics of shiatsu including Ki perception, fundamental principles for giving hands-on shiatsu and the classical meridian system. This day could also be used as a refresher for those who have not studied shiatsu for some time. You will need to bring your own lunch to this day.
JEAN S BIOGRAPHY All my working life I have been involved with improving people s health, originally within the NHS as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer. Having become dissatisfied with the limitations of orthodox medicine I studied shiatsu to be able to work with individuals using a holistic approach. After more than ten years as a successful shiatsu practitioner and teacher I recognized that food and lifestyle may need to be addressed to rectify chronic imbalances. Having followed a macrobiotic way of eating myself I deepened this understanding with study at the International Macrobiotic School, and use these studies within my practice. Jean Netherway MRSS(T) Changing our diets can bring up many emotional challenges and I have added Emotional Freedom Techniques to my skills to be able to empower my clients and students to make the necessary changes to their belief systems to make long-term health improvements. LUCIE s BIOGRAPHY My first experience of Shiatsu was as a young child and the seed was set. After several years of general education, a graphic design BTEC, various work and dabbling in the arts I came back round to Shiatsu when I received a session after the birth of my first child and I knew that Shiatsu was what I wanted to be doing. It gave me the support I needed at that time in my life and met me on a much deeper level than a massage. I have done various post-graduate courses including Structural Alignment with Saul Goodman. Shiatsu is such a wonderful part of my life and it is such a privilege to work with people and aid their healing journeys. Lucie Thring MRSS(t) I am a member of the Shiatsu Society which has a strict code of conduct and continual professional development. I am a teacher on the Devon School of Shiatsu Foundation course.
