August Newsletter 2018 Our mission is to be the helping hands of God, reaching out to all people with the love of Christ From the Pastor... You may have heard the old saying, One person s trash is another s treasure. I quite agree with this saying. In my teen years, thanks to my Aunt Net, I learned the value of shopping at thrift stores. I must say it is a passion of mine. Thrift store shopping is a treasure hunt. You never really know what you could find. If you have had the opportunity to stop by my office many of my decorations, including my two green wing back chairs, are thrift store finds. I find that shopping at thrift stores saves me money so that I can invest it in other ways. Jesus too talks of investing in treasure. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieve do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there you heart will be also. Matthew 6: 19-21 Jesus reminds us to store treasure in heaven. What is this treasure? I ve always thought of heavenly treasure as compassion, mercy, forgiveness, helpfulness, hospitality, generosity and love. To invest in these treasures sometimes requires of earthly monetary treasure. How we spend our money is a good indicator of our heart. (to paraphrase Jesus) At church we don t mind talking about love, forgiveness, and community. We enjoy singing hymns and studying the bible. We love to have fellowship around tables, but we don t like to talk about money until we absolutely have to. Well, my friends, its time to talk about money. First let s give God some praise for the generosity of others that allowed us to pay off the loan recently! I know this is a huge burden that has been lifted from our shoulders. Take a moment and offer God thanks and rest in the beauty of that relief. Ok, times up. We must turn our attention to the other money concerns of our church. I m not trying to be a Debby Downer but we must face the realization that we will not be able to pay 100% of our apportionments. That s okay. We just need to work toward meeting this goal in the future. As we are called to take one faithful step after another, what faithful step can you take to reach the goal in apportionments payment? I never ask anyone to do anything I myself am not willing to do. In this newsletter you will find an article about adopting an apportionment. Todd and I are adopting three apportionments that will be paid in full by December in addition to our regular giving. After prayerful discernment I ask you to join us. Maybe you can t pay one in full but you can help us make faithful steps forward. Never underestimate the power we have to effect change. Anthropologist Margaret Mead reminds us, Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world, indeed it s the only thing that ever has. Together we can change the world by our faithfulness and our generosity. May God always be your greatest treasure and may your greatest desire be to offer him gifts of your heart and life. Grace & peace, Pastor Marti

This was a major milestone in the life of the congregation. In a booklet that provides a short history of the church s first 20 years (1958-1978), the new sanctuary was described as a place where a new dimension of reverence is seen and felt, soaring toward His Holy Presence and searching for His Holy Purpose. Where you present on that August day when the new sanctuary was officially opened? Do you worship here now and experience new dimensions of reverence? We want to hear from you. Send your thoughts, reminiscences, and wishes for the church s next 60 years to us at charleswesleyumc@verizon.net.
Adopt An Apportionments How can you help pay the Apportionments, you may ask? One way is to "adopt" a specific apportionment line item and help us pay that one off. The amounts range from only $84.00 to $9,523.13. One such fund is the Virginia Education Fund ($828.00), which provides support to five Virginia Conference church-related colleges and universities. The fund helps provide scholarships to United Methodist students for attending. Another is the Africa University Fund ($96.00), which invests in Zimbabwe's first private university for men and women from all over Africa. The university's goal is to provide quality education and to encourage students to grow spiritually and to develop strong values and leadership skills. For more information on the various apportionment line items, and to adopt an item, see Leslie Jane. Shop and Help Out Charles Wesley UMC Too! Leslie Jane Fahrney, Treasurer Do you shop online?
