(I) Tues., Dec. 3 TEL AVIV This afternoon we arrive in Tel Aviv where we are met by our Holy Land Tour Escort, who will accompany us throughout our exploration of the Holy Land. We will board our motor coach for the short drive to our hotel in the Mediterranean resort city of Tel Aviv for an evening at leisure. (I,D) Wed., Dec. 4 TEL AVIV/GALILEE This morning we depart Tel Aviv and travel north along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to the ruins of the ancient city of Caesarea Maritima, a city built by King Herod and which later became the seat of the Roman Governor. We visit the extensive excavations of the site including the harbor, the Crusader City and the Roman Aqueduct. Then we continue over the crest of Mt. Carmel, where the Prophet Elijah challenged the Priests of Baal. Our next stop is at Megiddo, the Harmageddon of the Book of Revelations which by Christian tradition is the site where the final great battle of the world will be fought. Next we continue our drive to our hotel on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. (B,D) Thurs., Dec. 5 GALILEE (Sea of Galilee) The Sea of Galilee is rich in memories of Jesus ministry around its shores. We begin with a visit to the so-called Jesus Boat the kind of fishing boat used by the disciples of Jesus, followed by a cruise on the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum. We visit the ancient synagogue and the House of Peter. Then we stop for a while on the Mt. of Beatitudes, the scene of the Sermon on the Mount, and the nearby ruins of Chorazim which was one of the small Jewish settlements which did not listen to Jesus. Next we visit Kursi, in the Land of the Gadarenes before ending with a stop at a baptismal site on the banks of the River Jordan at Yardenit. (B,D) Fri., Dec. 6 GALILEE (Golan Heights) A leisurely day on tour will take us north to the Golan Heights, a great combination of natural beauty and rich history. From the top of Mt. Bental there is an observation point of the Road to Damascus. Our next stop is at one of the sources of the River Jordan at Banias, the site of Caesarea Philippi, where the Apostle Peter made his great confession of faith in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God. We continue our drive to Tel Dan, the ruins of the northernmost town in biblical Israel (hence the saying from Dan to Beersheba ). (B,D) Sat., Dec. 7 GALILEE/JERUSALEM Today we begin in Cana where Jesus performed his first miracle at the wedding feast, before continuing to Sephoris, the most important city in Galilee during the first 4 centuries AD, before driving on to Nazareth where Jesus grew to manhood. Next we visit the excavations of the ancient Israelite city of Beit Shean. In New Testament times the city became one of the 10 cities of the Decapolis. We continue our tour southwards driving along the Jordan Valley via the ancient city of Jericho and up through the Judean Wilderness to Jerusalem, the City of God. Before checking into our hotel, we ll stop at an observation point to take a first glimpse over the City of Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel. (B,D) Sun., Dec. 8 JERUSALEM (Jerusalem the Old City) We begin this first day of our stay in Jerusalem with a drive to the top of the Mount of Olives to enjoy a majestic view over all of ancient and modern Jerusalem, the center of the biblical world. We walk down the Palm Sunday Road, via the Chapel of Dominus Flevit where Jesus wept over Jerusalem, to the Garden of Gethsemane where he prayed on the night of his betrayal. Next we enter the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, walking from the Pools of Bethesda and along the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Next we visit the Davidson Center at the Jerusalem Archaeological Park showing us the amazing ancient history of Jerusalem, followed by a walk through
the Western Wall Tunnel which starts at the Warren Shaft and continues under the Old City to reveal the city at the level it was 2000 years ago. We end this memorable day with a visit to the Garden Tomb and Gordon s Golgotha. (B,D) Mon., Dec. 9 JERUSALEM (Bethlehem) After breakfast we visit some of the archaeological sites in the Old City of Jerusalem including the Garden of Ophel which has revealed many remains from the Herodian period including the Hulda Gate and monumental steps which led up into the Temple Court. We also visit the Wohl Archaeological Museum, which has a remarkably vivid evocation of everyday life 2000 years ago. A visit to the Temple Institute is also on our program and we walk on through the Jewish Quarter of the city to Mt. Zion for a visit to the Upper Room, the Tomb of King David and the Church of St. Peter-in- Gallicantu, the House of Caiaphas, where Jesus was interrogated by the High Priest. This afternoon we drive to Bethlehem, the royal city of David, where Jesus was born. We visit the Basilica of the Nativity and the Field of the Shepherds, where the Angel of the Lord proclaimed the birth of the Savior. (B,D) Tues., Dec. 10 JERUSALEM (Masada/Dead Sea) Today we travel to the most arid region of the Holy Land as we venture to the isolated mountain-top fortress of Masada and the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. We will take to the skies by cable car to visit Masada where the Jews chose to commit mass suicide rather than submit to the Romans. We ll descend to the Dead Sea, touted since ancient times for the therapeutic qualities of its water and mud and we ll have an opportunity to dip and float in the salty water. On our return to Jerusalem, we ll stop to visit the remote site of the Qumran Caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found by a shepherd boy looking for a lost goat. This evening we enjoy a final dinner in the magical city of Jerusalem. (B,D) Wed., Dec. 11 JERUSALEM/HARTFORD Early this morning we travel to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport in preparation for our return journey home. No better time to reflect on memories of our Holy Land Pilgrimage that will last a lifetime and new friendships made along the way.
