God s Faithfulness A Shoresh Study Tours Itinerary October 12 24, 2017 Hosted by: Theresa Newell Travel through the land of Israel, from coast to desert to mountains, and visit the places where important Biblical events took place. Dig into the Scriptures studying their original context to learn about God s faithfulness to His people, in the past, present, and future. This tour includes sites from the Old and New Testaments as well as the history of modern Israel. In addition, you will learn about God s work amongst believers in the land today. Jesus Golan Heights Church of the Beatitudes Christ Church Guesthouse Capernaum Synagogue Cave #4, Qumran King David s Citadel Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem Nazareth Old City 116 Lake Street Ephrata, PA 17522 (717) 721-7300 (800) 874-9330

Thu., Oct. 12 Departure Depart New York s JFK Airport late this afternoon on the transatlantic flight to Tel Aviv. Fri., Oct. 13 Arrival in the Land of Promise Arrive at Ben Gurion Airport, and meet the guide and bus driver for the trip. Drive to the Ashkelon Hotel located on the Mediterranean Coast for dinner, followed by a brief meeting for introductions, orientation, and prayer. Sat., Oct. 14 The Lives of the Patriarchs Climb through the strategic lowlands into the Mountains of Judea, to the burial Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, and look at God s covenants with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob while there. Continue in the steps of the Patriarchs in the southern desert region called the Negev in the Bible. Visit Tel Arad, a major pre-abrahamic city and later an Israelite fortress. Time permitting; experience Bedouin hospitality and enjoy a short camel ride. Travel through the Judean Desert to the David Spa Hotel located along the Dead Sea for overnight. There is time to enjoy a float in the therapeutic mineral rich waters either at the inside pools or at the beach. Sun., Oct. 15 The Judean Desert: Seeking Refuge in the Wilderness Today s theme is the wilderness and what it signified to the ancient Israelites. Begin the day at Masada, Herod the Great s magnificent desert fortress palace, and the site of the last stand of the Zealots, a Jewish revolutionary group at the time of Jesus. From Masada, drive north to the beautiful subtropical oasis of Ein Gedi, where David hid from Saul. Depending on conditions, walk into the nature reserve and to the waterfalls. Be on the lookout for wildlife, including the furry rock badger and the graceful ibex. Discuss the temptation of Jesus in the Wilderness while at Ein Gedi. Continue to Qumran, the likely the home of the Essenes, a First Century Jewish sect which may have influenced early Christianity, and the site of the most exciting archaeological discovery ever made in Israel the Dead Sea Scrolls. Then travel up through the spectacular Syrian African Rift Valley, and cross the Jordan River before arriving at Ma agan Holiday Village located along the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Mon., Oct. 16 Around the Sea of Galilee: Daily Life and Religion in the Time of Jesus Visit various sites around the Sea of Galilee today and picture the daily life and religion of the First Century, and to better understand the miracles and teachings of Jesus in His original Jewish context. Begin at Chorazin, the well-preserved ruins of a typical Galilean village, and study village life, the Jewish religion, and the Pharisees. Continue to the Mount of Beatitudes, the traditional site of the Sermon on the Mount to consider Jesus teachings on the Kingdom of God. Take a short walk downhill to Capernaum, the town where Jesus lived during the majority of His ministry. Enjoy a contemplative time on the shore of the Lake at lovely Tabgha, which commemorates the multiplication of loaves and fish, and where Jesus met the disciples after the resurrection. Later in the afternoon visit Kibbutz Ginosar to see the Jesus Boat, a Galilean fishing boat from the First Century. Set sail for on a boat ride on the Lake and enjoy the views and time for worship, prayer and reflection. After dinner, meet with a local believer. Return to Ma agan Holiday Village for overnight. Tue., Oct. 17 Northern Israel: Who Do Men Say That I Am? Explore Northern Israel today, one of the most beautiful regions of the country and climb up to the magnificent Golan Heights. Learn what the Jewish people of 2,000 years ago expected of the Messiah, and how that was fulfilled in Jesus. First, visit a reconstructed Talmudic village at Katzrin, to examine life in New Testament times and the use of everyday imagery in Scripture. Travel along the lower slopes of Mount Hermon Israel s highest mountain, and the most likely site of the Transfiguration. Stop at Caesarea Philippi, in the region where Peter made his famous confession that Jesus is the Messiah. Pass by Druze Villages before arriving at Mt. Bental, a lookout spot near the border with Syria and the area where the Apostle Paul met the Lord on the road to Damascus. Stop at the Dan Nature Reserve, to see the incredible archaeological remains of the OT city of Dan, including the city gate from the time of Abraham, and there consider ancient Israel s apostasy. Enjoy a pleasant walk along a stream and discuss the meaning of living water as used in the Hebrew Scriptures and in Jesus teaching. Return to Ma agan Holiday Village for overnight. Wed., Oct. 18 Light to the Nations: Jews, Gentiles, and the Messiah Travel down the coast, to visit a number of Biblical sites which testify to God s faithfulness to His word, past, present, and future. Stop at ancient Nazareth, Jesus boyhood home and place of His early ministry. At nearby Sepphoris, examine Jesus relationship to Elijah, as well as His first miracle. End the day at the fabulous ruins of the Herodian city of Caesarea Maritima, the site of the conversion of Cornelius and the location from which Paul left Israel and set sail on his journey to Rome. Late in the afternoon, make the ascent to Jerusalem the City of the Great King. After dinner, enjoy a short stroll for a rooftop panoramic view of the Old City and talk with the Director of Shoresh Study Tours. Overnight accommodations while in Jerusalem are at Christ Church Guesthouse. Thu., Oct. 19 The Restoration of Hope: A Garland Instead of Ashes Today s study focuses on both a great tragedy and the wonder of the Lord s redemptive power. Examine King David s capital city of Jerusalem, the systematic annihilation of six million Jews in the Nazi genocide, and the loving witness of Christians committed to the Biblically prophesied physical restoration and spiritual rebirth of the Jewish people. Begin with a tour of the Christ Church Heritage Centre to learn about CMJ s 200-year history of ministry to the Jewish people. Then, after breakfast, travel to the place where it all began the City of David. Learn about King David s conquest of the Jebusite city, and walk through Hezekiah s Tunnel to the Pool of Siloam. Continue to Yad VaShem, the Israel Memorial Museum to the Holocaust and examine the spiritual and theological roots of the most notorious genocide in history and the connection between the Church, Jesus and the Jewish people. Return to Christ Church for overnight. Fri., Oct. 20 Jerusalem in the Time of Jesus: The Temple at the Center Today is devoted to learning about the Jerusalem of Jesus day, when the Temple in Jerusalem was the center of Jewish life. Studies focus on how worship was performed in the

temple, the Sadducees and Jesus attitude towards them, and will provide insight into many important events in the gospels and book of Acts. Begin with a trip to the excavations near the base of the Temple Mount to discuss Pentecost on the Southern Steps where Jesus walked. After a visit to the Western Wall place of prayer, Judaism s most holy site, descend into the subterranean Western Wall Tunnels to walk at what was street level during the time of Jesus. After lunch, go up to the Temple Mount to consider some of Jesus activities there, as well as the claims of Islam. If time permits, stop to examine the remains of the Pool of Bethesda. Return to Christ Church for overnight. Sat., Oct. 21 Free morning in Jerusalem & the Birthplace of Jesus The morning is free for rest, reflection, shopping, or for the energetic, perhaps a walk on the walls of the Old City. Drive to Bethlehem this afternoon to visit the Church of the Nativity, which marks the probable site of the birth of Jesus, and see the Shepherd s Fields where the angels heralded the advent of Messiah. Celebrate a Jewish Passover Seder meal this evening to fully understand the role of the Lamb of God and make the Biblical connections to the last supper that Jesus shared with His disciples. Return to Christ Church for overnight. Sun., Oct. 22 Worship at Christ Church & The New City Participate in the morning worship service at Christ Church today. In the afternoon, travel to the New City. While most Biblical sites in Jerusalem are located inside or nearby the walled Old City, most of the population of modern Jerusalem lives in the bustling and vibrant New City. For a glimpse of modern Israeli society, follow pedestrian streets along Jaffa Road to Zion Square, then up Ben Yehuda Street to the colorful Mahane Yehuda open-air market, where Jerusalemites shop for some of the best and freshest foods in Israel and sit in cozy cafes. The whole walk is filled with interesting history, as well as great people watching, photographic and eating opportunities. Return to Christ Church for overnight. Mon., Oct. 23 In the Steps of Jesus: Crucifixion, Death, Burial and Resurrection Today s focus is on sites related to the Biblical passages concerning Jesus last week in Jerusalem. Discover why He was crucified, how He was buried, and what it meant to the Jewish people of the First Century that He was raised from the dead. Begin with a panoramic overlook of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, the site of Jesus ascension to heaven and His future second coming. After viewing a tomb from the time of Jesus, walk down the Mount of Olives to Gethsemane. Cross the Kidron Valley and enter the Old City through Dung Gate traveling through the Jewish Quarter of the Old City to see the Herodian Villas, the palatial mansions that were the home to the Sadducees, the ruling priesthood at the time of Jesus. Continue to the Citadel Tower of David and Kishle, the site of King Herod s palace and probable location of Jesus trial before Pilate. Enter the Christian Quarter to arrive at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the most likely site of the burial and resurrection of Jesus. The tour ends with a time of reflection at a site which wonderfully illustrates Jesus burial and resurrection, the peaceful Garden Tomb. Return to Christ Church to rest before an evening departure for the airport. Tue., Oct. 24 To the Ends of the Earth The flight home departs just after midnight, with arrival scheduled in the U.S. around six in the morning. PLEASE NOTE: Itinerary and accommodation subject to change if conditions necessitate. Some days involve a significant amount of walking and/ or steep climbing.
