Their First Father s Day On June 9 th, two men, Gaston Mendiola Arroyo and Aristotle Quan, were ordained as priests for the Diocese of Orange. They join a group of 430 men across the United States will be ordained this year, most of them in the month of June. According to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate's (CARA) annual survey, the majority of newly ordained priests first considered priesthood when they were 17 years old. Nearly half of responding ordinands (45 percent) report that they completed a college or university undergraduate degree before entering the seminary. The most common fields of study are social science, theology or philosophy, business, or liberal arts. Nearly three-fourths of responding ordinands (74 percent) served as altar servers before entering the seminary. Nearly three in five (57 percent) served as lectors. Around half served as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (46 percent). One in three served as catechists (38 percent), in campus ministry or youth ministry (35 percent), or as confirmation sponsors/godfathers (31 percent). Although most considered the priesthood as a teenager, 64% worked full-time prior to entering the seminary. The average age of those being ordained this year is 35, which is the norm. Nearly nine in ten responding ordinands (86 percent) reported being encouraged to consider the priesthood by someone in their life (most frequently, a parish priest, friend, or another parishioner). Responding ordinands indicate that, on average, four individuals encouraged their vocation. One-half of responding ordinands (51 percent) indicated that they were discouraged from considering the priesthood by one or more persons. Most often, this person was a friend/classmate or a family member (other than parents). As 430 newly ordained priests prepare to celebrate their first Father s Day next weekend, let us pray for them and all who have joyfully accepted the call and gift of the priesthood. Do you encourage or discourage vocations to the priesthood? Do you know someone who you think would make a good priest? Tell them. Many married couples first met because a friend introduced them to each other. Inviting someone to discern a call to the priesthood is similar. You are match-making and when someone finds that match, he/she is the happiest person on earth. I certainly am. Your Father, Fr. Brendan Manson Pastor St. Edward s is seeking applicants to fill 3 new job openings: Liturgy Coordinator: Organizes/manages liturgies; oversees liturgical ministries Media Coordinator: Coordinates/contributes to communications across a variety of media Ministry Coordinator: Organizes/manages non-liturgical ministries; outreach/contact for community organizations & non-parish ministries For more information, please go to www.rcbo.org/careers/ or contact Hillary McDonald, Human Resources Manager at hmcdonald@stedward.com 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4

BY MEANS OF OUR HANDS This is what I remember: My shaking hands were taken into the bishop s confident hands. Then hands were placed on my head, the bishop s first and then the many hands of the priests who, by this action, made me one of theirs. The bishop soon anointed them and was not stingy with the oil; they smelled of Chrism all day. Quickly my hands were used to embrace, extended in consecration, spread out in supplication, and put to work distributing communion. Before I knew it, they were used to bless bishops and parents, family and friends, and strangers too, who all gripped and held and kissed them because they had become a blessing. The rest is a blur, quickly commonplace and surprisingly busy. These hands have stretched out to anoint small babies and dying saints, to absolve, to comfort, to strengthen, to bless marriages, and to pray for guidance at endless meetings and to beg God that cars won t crash and planes will land safely and surgeries will be successful. They have locked and unlocked countless doors and tabernacles and safes and storage sheds and car doors on early mornings on the way home from hospice or hospital. My hands have pointed the way to heaven and to the nearest restroom. They have picked up trash lying around the parking lot and cheerios left underneath the pews. They have quickly typed intercessions on Saturday afternoons and letters for the bulletin on Tuesdays. These hands have turned innumerable pages in sacramentaries, breviaries, lectionaries, bibles, memos, homiletic aids, spiritual and theological texts, flyers, newspapers and the quarterly financials of parish and school which, from time to time, were not in the black as one had hoped. They have handed rings to nervous grooms, bowls of Eucharist to ministers, baskets to ushers, and missalettes to parishioners. They have held bingo balls and winning raffle tickets, documents both civil and religious, apostolic blessings and lost purses, plates of spaghetti and flashlights when the security alarm went off in the church or hall. These hands have counted hosts and collections, lit candles, poured incense into censers, fingered rosary beads and made the sign of the cross with monstrances. They have signed memos and petitions and certificates and letters, including lots of begging letters, and too many checks against too few deposit slips. They have gestured wildly at times when words failed me or got lost or were in the wrong language or were not sufficiently cogent to make what originally seemed to me to be a very simple point. Their touch has calmed the trembling, stopped the impetuous, wiped away tears, dismissed worries, even my own. On the many times when my mind was empty and I didn t know what to do, these hands have cradled my face and helped me scratch my head. Luckily, they have stayed in jacket pockets when, like Saint Peter, I would have preferred to strike out. They have often enough not typed an angry letter to the bishop or a curt email reply to an annoying parishioner. They have not slammed the door. They have not pointed fingers in angry judgment. Well, at least not nearly as often as I wanted to. My hands are worn now, with marks and bumps and calluses. I should put some lotion on them, give them a rest, reward them for what they have done. But I don t; I can t, for there s much more still to do. The priesthood is a craft as well as a sacrament. It is an art we priests practice lovingly by means of our hands. Msgr. Mike Heher Pastor, St. Anne Catholic Church Seal Beach, Ca. June 10, 2018 Page 5

Adoration Society Invites You Adoration Society invites you to come and worship our Eucharistic Lord during 24-hour adoration at St. Edward Church on the first and third Mondays of the month. We encourage you to make a special commitment for one hour (once or twice a month) to pray before the exposed Blessed Sacrament. We schedule at least two adorers for every hour from 9:00 a.m. on Monday until 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday. In addition to contemplative prayer for your own intentions, we encourage you to pray for the intentions written in our Church s Prayer Request Book, for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and for peace in our world. May your encounter with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament during your Holy Hour be blessed. Your friend in Christ, Deana Progar Adoration Chairperson Stop by our table after Mass today for more information or to sign up for adoration Eucharistic Adoration Indeed, since the Eucharistic Mystery was instituted out of love, and makes Christ sacramentally present, it is worthy of thanksgiving and worship. And this worship must be prominent in all our encounters with the Blessed Sacrament, both when we visit our churches and when the sacred species are taken to the sick and administered to them. The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus waits for us in this Sacrament of Love. Let us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in Adoration and in contemplation that is full of faith and love; ready to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the world. May our adoration never cease. Encyclical from His Holiness Pope John Paul II In brief, the Eucharist is the summit and summary of our faith. Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking. Christ Jesus is present in many ways to his Church : in his word, in his Church s prayer where two or three are gathered in my name, in the poor, the sick, and the imprisoned, in the Sacraments of which he is the author, in the sacrifice of the Mass, and in the person of the minister our Priests. But he is PRESENT most especially in the Eucharistic species. (Catechism of the Catholic Church). 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 6

Throughout the year, the teachers expanded the curriculum beyond the text books, offering many hands-on learning experiences for the students which allowed them to experience what life was like for the earliest settlers. In preparation for their Mission project builds, learners visited San Juan Capistrano Mission. Then, in February, learners spent the night on the Spirit of Dana Point and Pilgrim tall ships at the local Ocean Institute. Recreating the sailor s journey coming to the California coast in the 1830s, the students collected cow hides, worked a block and tackle system, kept night watch, slept in the cramped quarters, cooked in the galley, sang sea chanteys, and experienced hardships on the ship, like cold nights and humble meals. Then in May, learners ventured to either Sacramento or Lazy W Ranch to further experience California s state history and the Gold Rush. In Sacramento, they visited the State Capital, Sutter s Fort, Sutter s Mill and the Railroad Museum where they saw Congress in session, pan mined for gold and learned about early exploration. At Lazy W Ranch, students made tortillas, created adobe bricks, and experienced life on an early California ranch. True to the school s #AlwaysLearning motto, these adventures truly created a memorable fourth grade year! June 10, 2018 Page 9
