From the Pastor s Desk. 3/18/18 MARCH 25, 2018 4 HOLY WEEK is the most important week of the year for Christians. We call this week Holy because we commemorate all that Jesus did for our salvation. This is so central to our faith that nearly half of the Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of John focus on this week in the life of Jesus. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. Holy Week includes Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. These days are known as the Triduum (The Holy Three Days). As we move into this week we are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). See the schedule offered for this Monday. On Palm Sunday we recall the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem in humility and poverty as he rides on a young donkey. The people acclaimed him their king and called to him, Hosanna (which means save us). As we raise our palm branches let us call upon our Lord to save us today. On Holy Thursday Jesus celebrates the Last Supper with his twelve disciples. On this day we commemorate Jesus gift of His Body and Blood (the Eucharist) and the institution of the Priesthood. He then models His teachings as he surprises and calls them to true service by the act of washing their feet. This day is rightly called the day of love. We are invited to follow Jesus commandment of love and serve the poor members of our community. On Good Friday we ponder in silence that two thousand years ago, outside the city of Jerusalem, at a place called Calvary, Jesus died for you and me. He died for our sins. He was rejected and betrayed by his own disciples. The message of the Cross is that God still loves the world. The Cross is our salvation. It is never too late to stand by Jesus in his trials. On Holy Saturday we make the final preparation for the celebration of the sacraments of initiation and for the glory of Jesus Resurrection. Our Catholic faith is founded upon this glorious Easter message. This Sunday we will hear the Passion Narrative according to Mark s Gospel which paints a scene of humiliation. Jesus was abandoned by his closest friends and followers, arrested alone and was crucified in a swift manner. Yet, He did not give up hope. He shares that hope with us during our darkest times. The Church offers us this Holy Week to pause and ponder what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Holy Week is a time to get ready for the feast of Easter, when we celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord and the power of his almighty love. God bless you, Fr. John Francis

PALM SUNDAY RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONAL CORNER 5 Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. - Director of Faith Formation Contact Information 718 591-6536 We have come to the beginning of Holy Week, the most solemn week of our liturgical year. On Saturday, March 24 th, our children preparing for their First Holy Communion and our youngsters preparing for their Confirmation came together from 2:00-4:00 to experience a mini-holy Week at their level. Next Sunday will be the great celebration of Easter, Jesus is Risen, Alleluia, Alleluia. We hope that all of our Faith Formation children come to the 10:45 am Mass with their families. We will be honored to have Bishop Massa be the main celebrant. Children will read the petitions, serve as ushers and bring up the gifts. Immediately after Mass, we will have an Easter Egg Hunt. Eggs will be hidden all over the front of the Church. All eggs will have something inside, but some will have money. Have you ever wondered why Easter eggs and bunnies are so popular at Easter? Easter is all about the Resurrection of Jesus to a new life. It is because of His death and resurrection that at baptism we begin to share in this new life, and one day live this new life eternally with Him in heaven. An egg is a tiny mystery. The opaque shell hides what is happening until it bursts open and new life springs out. Ancient people were intrigued by eggs and associated their oval shape with rebirth and fertility. Rabbits, with their power to procreate, also are considered a fertility symbol, which might explain where the more secular Easter bunny comes from. Over the years Christians have taken these pagan symbols and ascribed them a part of the Easter story of Jesus death and resurrection. Easter eggs are said to be symbolic of Jesus emerging from the tomb and ultimate resurrection on Easter Sunday. God bless you! Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Hermana Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Director de Formación de Fe
